It is a lot easier to qualify now as there are more teams in tournaments. During Bests time there was only 16 teams qualified.
Yeah was thinking about that after I posted.

Did some research. I don't know anything of his NI teammates so cannot comment on their quality. They had a great chance in 1966 but appear rather average/weak going forward.

1966 - finished second to Switzerland; needed a win the last qualifier to match the Swiss result ten days prior - gave up a late goal in a draw - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1966_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_–_UEFA_Group_5

1970 - couldn't topple the Soviet Union in head-to-head - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_–_UEFA_Group_4

1974 - finished third including a loss to mighty Cyprus - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1974_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_–_UEFA_Group_6
Fine margins then, massive shame. Nice one for the research.

The VAR decision was awful. I’m happy with Wales though, the effort was outstanding and the stadium was buzzing. All the players went to the Ukraine section to clap them, was nice to see. The Ukrainian supporters were great.
Yeah, that was nice to see. Both the Welsh fans and Ukrainian fans were great. It was a nice change of pace from the typical adversarial/goading (not that I'm against that all the time) that you typically get at the end of such a match. Just nice to see Bale going to a World Cup.

What could we do ? We were going to be hated for knocking Ukraine out but I’m absolutely buzzing right now and cracked the first of many beers open to celebrate our little but beautiful country making it to the World Cup…never thought I’d see it my lifetime and after a shitty season or ten with my beloved United then I’m gonna milk this for all it’s worth… CYMRU AM BYTH

Well done Wales.

Now do the same to England in November now please (same applies to Iran & USA) :D

Thought Ukraine were unlucky with that VAR decision but Hennssey was fantastic in goals! That save near the end from Dovbyk’s header was something else.

Yesterday we found out Southgate isnt a football manager, he is an educator.

Thats why he looks so clueless on the bench, it all makes sense, i want england to do well in Qatar but this lad doesnt have it.

If we don't beat this Sweden team we need to permanently retire our NT.

Ukraine got shafted by that penalty decision. They'll rightly be bitter about this game now.

Other than that, it was a good performance, though also typical of why they only secured playoff with the last game. Avoided losing to France, but also 6 draws in other qualifying games that they were often quite dominant in possession/chance creation, yet not clinical enough and always giving up 2 or 3 big chances on the counterattack.

Wales defended very well and played a far more determined game than the Scots non-effort. They could have finished it off with those two big chances in the second half.

Malinovsky was poor, giving away free kicks and ruining attacks regularly. He's been too inconsistent this season.

But no ones gonna hate Wales for it? Never on the agenda unless you are Wales fan absurdly claiming it. The pressure was all on Ukraine.
Great match though. And, mostly no shitty ass time wasting at the end, full respect for that.

Yeah right about the VAR decision, it was an awful call. Hennessey was outstanding, really came through. The defence as a whole was very good, I think Conte has had a great effect on Ben Davies

I am so pumped. So proud of the Wales team today - no one can deny that each and every player put in a shift today. Threw their bodies on the line constantly. Hennessey had a hell of a game.

I can't believe I am going to see Wales play in a World Cup.

Out of curiosity, who does actually support Scotland?

From what I can tell, all the Celtic fans either support Ireland or nobody, and all the Rangers fans don't support them because they're against Scottish nationalism/independence, and that's probably 80% of the football fans in the country.
You can be against Scottish nationalism and support Scotland. I'm sure you know this and are just being a typical " we are so superior " England fan.
I will grant you that most Celtic supporters do support Ireland. Even the ones with no Irish connection whatsoever. Something that has increased dramatically in the last 25 years.

Behind the right goal post as "Whiteside shoots!"

If Benzema doesn’t win then they are better to give the trophy to Messi until he dies of old age. What the hell he did this year? Salah, Benzema the Polish striker with a mile long name were way better than him.

Nope, I'm Welsh. I got that impression from a Rangers forum (was browsing to get an idea of how Amad was getting on) and saw a thread on the Scottish national side and how most of the Rangers fans on there said they didn't support them, and even the few that did were saying they fecking hated the Tartan Army.

I just find the politics/sectarianism in Scottish football to be absolutely mental.
