In getting the best price patience is the key. We know that both sides are desperate to either sell of buy him. So its a matter of who blinks first.
You don't expect some progression in this negotiation to be linear or have some development every day. ETH only started working for United like 2 1/2 weeks ago.
But what is the cut off timeline here ? It’s just over 2 weeks left for Barcelona before all hell breaks loose for them as it’s reported. But they don’t seem to be that desperate at all and are amazingly calm. I’m surprised how stubborn they are to dig their heels in. I don’t quite get it. I would have thought they would be happy to get a fee around €70m for de Jong given time is against them but we are quite apart in agreeing a fee for de Jong as reported by Ornstein and whitwell.

Think we will make a €70+15 kind of bid today or tomorrow.

And most likely move on if Barca dig their heels at the rumored 80+20 demand.

Fabregas Vol.2

Wasting an entire summer chasing a player who doesn’t want to be here before overspending on somebody like Ruben Neves in a panic.

People keep saying about di Maria vibes from this one. I'm also getting Sancho 2020 vibes.

Barca want 100 million euros and we don't want to pay it.

The deal seems pretty dead to me.

Wasted all that time, trying to convince the player to join, only to then walk away.

Only United do this.

Utd began talks with Barca on the 1st June, it's now the 15th, only utd work like this
True! It's almost as if Chelsea haven't been negotiating for Kounde since January and Madrid didn't just lose a target they had been in contact with since last summer.

I think a quality young player coming here to give us his prime years after we haven't won the league in 9 years and have been in and out of the UCL has proper reasons to have reservations over coming here.
We're still one of the biggest football club in the world but our performance on the pitch fall short of the best. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, PSG in recent years have outperformed us and most players would rather go to this clubs than us.
It will take some convincing that our new structure and ETH can take us back to the top competing on a regular basis with this clubs, so its understandable that Frenkie De Jong would have his reservations, ideally we should target players at clubs who would see United as an obvious step up, but this is a unique scenario due to Barca financial issues and ETH relationship with the player.
So I choose to trust the club and be patient to see were this all end up, it won't be long before we know if this would go through or if we have to walk away from this.

Where the grass is greener.
Everything is rotten and it's now too late for that to change. You're just pretending otherwise.
I'm not one to pretend things are perfect, they aren't, but the never relenting negativity of so many on here is exhausting. What is the point of being miserable all of the time about something that's meant to bring joy.

I'm not getting a good vibe about this potential transfer.

I thought we were only going to go after players that really wanted to play for the club. He's come out numerous times saying he's happy there, he's playing for the biggest club in the world etc. That really doesn't sound like someone coming to United because they want to, but if it were to happen it's because he's been pushed out by Barca. Great player and would love him here, but only if he truly wanted to come.

Exactly this.. ^^
We'd been led to believe that De Jong had been talked around, but comments last night suggest totally different.

In the past, we would continue to linger around, so it remains to be seen if we really will move on quickly from this, and if we actually do have an alternative...

I don't mind him needing talked round - a player of his calibre would be nuts if he didn't have second thoughts about joining us right now.
Where I do agree is that unless we have something concrete from the player, we do need to move on.
I've went from thinking we had no chance to being very optimistic. Now I don't think it's happening and we need to look at alternatives.

Do Barca? Or do we count them out too now?

Of course we’re a huge club ffs

We had a dog shit team last year mind, but that aint the same thing, top managers and players still want to come, season tickets for 50 odd thousand still sold like hot cakes.
If any other team who has not won trophies for a long time claims to still be a top club, you would laugh at them. Like we did at Pool many years ago.

You're getting top club and huge club mixed up. No sane person would say we are one of the top clubs right now - but we are still one of the biggest.

Anyone who still think we are a huge club needs to have his brain checked

I mean you literally inferred that we aren’t a ‘huge’ club anymore, by saying anyone who thinks so should have their brain checked. We are still the most widely supported English club in the world and probably the third most supported behind Real and Barca. Therefore we are still a huge club, however are we a top club? Not currently.

if you were training somebody to say Jack shit if they were possibly moving would you tell them to say they are currently at the best club in the world?
Yep. That's the way media training works, to sell a particular narrative.

Why does this transfer have to be finalised first. Can we not make moves for other transfers, like:- WF, RB, CB.
There is a saga over some transfer every season now. Nothing's Changed.

What difference does It make if we signed him 2 weeks ago, today or the day we start our training at the end of the month ? He still gonna go away for a break.

each day Barcelona is more desperate so waiting is on our side.

lets hope that he is available at the first training when all the players suppose to be back. If not then It will be a good day to start whining. Before that is just silly.

Barcelona don’t have to sell him, they can sell other players, they’re not desperate for anything, and by all accounts it doesn’t seem like he wants to leave

If Utd can't get this one over the line, the club will look like absolute amateurs

Also - for those who thought no UCL would be an issue this window, unless there is a pretty drastic turn i events (which there could be), the clubs who have been most proactive/decisive are all those with top tier football next season. Who knew.

We are so amateur as a club when it comes to transfers and contracts!! My god!!

This is laughable and depressing at the same
time!

I agree with you. I'm hoping that'll change much quicker for us than it did for Liverpool

I think the difference though, is that we are still quite attractive to even some of the best players - probably due to financial reasons combined with our global fan base.

So by all reports by Anthony and De Jong are very advanced and folk are still spouting this?
We're still in the Antony is a target phase, no rumors of concrete discussions, certainly nothing advanced. FdJ we knew we hired a 3rd party firm to start negotiating in May.

I'd hope we atleast know who our targets were by now, otherwise there's no hope for the club.

One target at a time is quite a financial/linear budget-driven approach. If you have a fixed budget you want to adhere to, then you get your top priority target first then your 2nd and then see what's left in the kitty before going out to look for the alternatives.

I suspect that was how Woodward thought. This way he will always have a fixed budget and will always meet it. Its a 2D linear approach in a 3D transfer market environment.
I know modern finance is complex, but surely it can't be that hard to estimate how much they'll pay for the transfer and start using the rest of the budget. We know he's going to cost something between 60-80M.

I can understand that they can't sign Nunez and FdJ both in the same window and FdJ is our #1 target but I don't understand what prevents them from going for Timber, Antony etc. while we negotiate this deal.

The players report for training in two weeks. You're all mad if you think we can pull off FdJ, Timber and Antony in that period.

We haven’t wasted an entire summer though have we? By all accounts we are setting a deadline and prepared to move on to other targets, so fail to see the comparison.

But that would simply only leave us with the second of only two possible outcomes which is that he will ultimately fail to live up to expectations. Therefore why even consider being smug at all?

'Prepared to walk away' has been a sign that a deal is done in the past few windows
