I can understand FDJ being a bid money move and taking time.. but why arent we getting other players in?
Pre season starts in less than a month .. we need several players..

There is no way these guys can work on multiple deals at the same time.. there is no evidence of them being that competent. When are we going to get going?
FDJ deal will decide how much budget is left and whom to target after that. Hes ETHs no1 priority so understandably the signing takes presicdence.

As reported above we've made an offer to eriksson so its not luke we arent chasing other players.

I think there are probably two other transfers lined up and pretty much ready to go once we know what's the deal with FDJ, also an alternative to FDJ should he not work out. I'm guessing the FDJ saga will resolve in a week or so.

Why are Nunez and Haaland being spoken about like they're equals.
Well, until they both start scoring goals in the PL we don’t know because as we all know goals in Germany and Portugal don’t always mean that they will have success in the PL

Fingers crossed. This summer more than ever we could do with the players having a full pre-season with Ten Hag. It’s probably not crucial to De Jong or Antony as they’ve played for him before but it would certainly help.

It’s not just the training either. Get the deals done so the players can have their medicals and get house hunting etc so they can settle in.

Deadline day deals and January transfers show how hard it is for players to hit the ground running if they arrive late or mid season.

Why would we want Eriksen when Bruno is basically the same player? A slow high risk creative player who can’t dribble.
They are nothing alike. Eriksen has a level of football intelligence Bruno never will. Not to say that makes Bruno bad, but utilisation of the ball and understanding of what is going on around them and what to do in accordance with that is at opposite ends of the scale.

Ultimately one is a perfect team player, the other a maverick.

Maybe we’re actually going to start being proactive in games and play attacking football with two attacking midfielders.

What happens if this transfer falls through. We should be trying to get other deals over the line now. There just doesn't seem to be any move on anything, even outgoings. It's weird.

It's not weird.

We live in this football manager era where fans expect things to happen at lightening pace.

The window has barely opened and not many clubs are making any signings. Big clubs that is. City triggered the release clause of Haaland, so that wasn't a 'hard' deal. Liverpool have been linked with Nunez just as long as United. Who knows how long they've been talking.

We just need some patience in here. The hysteria, while hilarious, needs to calm down.

Well the rumour is we’d try for Neves (though seems a step down and Wolves would probably want same type of fee.. or over £50m anyway).

But if we get neither, we might switch priorities to defence or wide forwards.

I think this is a domino thing… FDJ comes (or doesn’t) then we move on to next priorities with say £50m left.

If we pushed on for say… Malacia and Antony (as we only target Dutch players or Ajax per media) and they cost £90m, board might say “you’ve got £30m left, FDJ is a no unless you can sell £30m worth”.

TH clearly wants FDJ and prioritising it … over the next week, I’d expect movement on FDJ then other targets progressed.

I agree the hysteria is out of hand but it does seem strange that we've not got anything done. No club has finished their business but pretty much every team has done something.

Real Madrid - Rudiger and Tchouameni
Bayern - Mazraoui and Gravenberch
City - Haaland and Julian Alvarez
Liverpool - Nunez
Tottenham - Perisic and now Bissouma looking likely

Aston Villa, Leeds, Arsenal etc have all done something.

I imagine a lot depends on FDJ and maybe his fee dictates whether its Timber or Torres, Nkunku or Antony etc as the budget can only stretch so far but you would think a young player for the future may have been done or a 3rd goalie or whatever.

How many of those clubs hired a new coaching team in the last month?

The process Ten Hag and the club have been going through, identifying targets, outlining budgets and creating a recruitment plan for this summer, which has been happening over the last few weeks, will have been carried out over the past several months by all of those clubs.

If Ten Hag came in and Murtough just signed 4 players for him, without his input and proper deliberation, we would all be giving out about such amateur behaviour and poor planning.

There is still 10/12 days before preseason starts. There is literally no material difference between signing players yesterday, or in 10 days time. Let's give them a chance and complain if the squad goes on tour without any additions.

This is all good but maybe we should be pushing Jones, Bailly, AWB, Henderson, Martial, Pereira, Chong etc to get on with moving or not. Those should be the sales that help fund other deals.

Yeah. We should put them in the U23's and fine them until they leave.

This isn't Football Manager and our issues with shipping out players is of our own doing. It is not their fault we signed them on wages that far outweighed their abilities and we can't expect other clubs to come in and make up for our mistakes. If we want to sell most of those names above, we are going to have to pay a significant chunk towards the amounts outstanding on their contracts.

i.e. the club value him at ~£30m but know no club is stupid enough to pay it and so will be stuck with him another season. Joel Glazer's favourite player don't forget.
Im praying Newcastle go in for him

We are trying to be calm mate. We need about 5/6 players but won't get these on 120 million budget. We need to sell some players first. There is not a sign of this yet, not reported anyway.

City have also signed Alvarez and Liverpool have signed Carvalho. 2 players each and the best young forwards in Europe to boot. Spurs (our main competition now) have signed Perisic and Bissouma. Edit: They have basically Spence signed too. Arsenal have signed Marquinhos.

With all our outgoings and the state of our team it's not being greedy or unrealistic to expect 5 first team players incoming this window. The longer they drag out making a signing you just know we'll end up with 3. Ten Hag will be behind the cue ball from day one.

We're also incapable of selling a player for a fee at the moment. Can't blame fans for being worried to be honest.[/QUOTE]

The CAF: JUST PAY THE MONEY!

Also the CAF: We waste sooo much money.

Also the CAF when United are trying to get their money's worth: WE'RE SKINT!
Also:

The CAF: We don't have any patterns of play, we have no defined style! Every successful team has that!

the CAF: And our transfer strategy is rubbish! We need to construct a squad with a clear idea of where the needs are and how players fit into a clearly defined style, not just sign whatever big name Woodward thinks is going to sell shirts and then try to make it somehow work with what we have!

Also the CAF: Yay, Christian Eriksen!! Because our most urgent need is another veteran player who can only play the same position as Bruno Fernandes!

Not hysteria at all. Window after window we watch areas of the squad be neglected which every fan and pundit to boot acknowledges needs to be strengthened. We buy players for positions without a clear plan as to how to utilise them and youth players without a clear plan of how to develop them. We are a shit show.

On the flip side, other teams work year round to ensure that preseason is used appropriately to bed in new players while we push the deadlines trying to get deals.

Diaz and Jota and Minamino and Nunez were prep for Salah and Mane leaving; It ain’t rocket science. The Haaland deal was only simple because they did the ground work. We seem to treat every deal like peace talks...bluffing our arses of and being left with desperation signings...Fellani, Amad, VDB as a cheap alternative to Grealish possibly. We are just odd and anyone that sits there and supports this obvious ineptitude is barmy! It’s not hysteria...it’ssaying what we see...year after year...

As a Dane I should be ecstatic at the prospect of Eriksen in a United shirt. But it just doesn't feel awesome or exciting at all.

Eriksen a lot of people wanted and now we've offered him a contract no one wants him because he's a "veteran" at 30. We need squad players, we sign squad players and that's not good enough. We're not gonna get 23 first team players. You need these types of signings.

The hysteria is real and actually rather hilarious. I'd understand if this was 2 days before the end of the window. But it's barely opened and people are getting the hump because it's not football manager and actually real life.

I think the concern some fans have with Eriksen is that he plays in the same position Bruno and Donny plays. I'm happy with him if that's what ETH deems required.

I know the window barely opened but that doesn't change the fact we're 2 weeks away from the preseason tour, and teams that were already ahead of us and finished above us started strengthening significantly already, even though the window barely opened. And it's not like concerns about our ability in the market have no substance to it, we do have a poor track record with negotiating and moving onto our targets quickly. Don't we still have M. Judge responsible for negotiations?

  • None of those clubs have changed manager at the end of the window.
  • The Haaland deal was not done because of fecking ground work it was done simply because they triggered a release clause!
  • We want a clear way of playing ok great, but we also don't want to force players on the new manager and piss him off before he's already started, because if we did the CAF would cry 'commercial signings not what the team actually needs'
  • But what the team actually needs would be highlighted by the new manager. Who let me say it again. HAS LITERALLY JUST STARTED IN THE JOB. We would have pinpointed the players throughout the season and then got them in early in the window, but we can't because he's literally just started
  • We aren't gonna sign new players 5 weeks after the new manager has started in time for the pre-season. Reality doesn't work like that.

I need to spell this out? Er, yeah, Woodward has left the club. But the fans complaints about what was wrong with him haven't. For years, people complain because they think we sign veteran big-name players according to their marketability, with little thought given to constructing a functional squad on the basis of clearly defined needs. Then we want to sign a veteran big-name player who oozes marketability even beyond his current on-pitch contribution, despite the fact he fits into squad needs to about the same degree as Donny van de Beek did. Yes, we need squad players. But maybe in an area where we are actually lacking depth, instead of a position where we already have our best player, and possibly a backup option (Donny) whom it will be diificult to get enough playing time as it is. How does that work out? Play Bruno out of position on the right? Push DvdB to a deeper midfield role? Or play Eriksen deeper? Then what about de Jong? If we do this and also keep VdB and sign FdJ, this is archetypically a move that creates new problems rather than solve any. Sure he's a good player, but that's not a good enough reason to sign him.

Whichever way you cut it, the arguments for signing Eriksen are all about liking him as a player, not about how he fits into the squad or our needs. Also, at most he helps for a couple of seasons, and hence does not contribute to any sort of rebuild. And signing a player for those reasons is in obvious contradiction to the kind of general transfer approach that most on the Caf are calling for.

And please, I'm not bitching because we haven't signed anyone yet or I only want first team players (and absolutely nothing in my post gave you reason to think I did). What gets me is people bitching about disjointed recruitment and then jumping the bandwagon as soon as we're linked with a big-name player they like.

Haven't seen anyone argue we should have signed loads of players already. Clearly the circumstances are special. The point goes to doing transfers according to a coherent plan. One thing is right now, but we haven't been doing that earlier either.

Haaland: You think it's as simple as that? A dozen clubs would have triggered that release clause without a moment's hestitation if that's all it took. Why do you think no one did? In reality the decision was Haaland's, and it will have taken a great deal of hard work and negotiation to make that come through.

RE: Haaland

Of course not, but it's far easier to negotiate with a player than it is a club. There was no back and forth of finding the right fee for the player etc etc. Simply personal terms.

After his dad playing at City and playing for Pep, one would assume the negotiations were rather straight forward.

But we've also lost Mata, Lingard and Pogba who all play in the center of midfield. We can't rely on Fred, MCT, DVB and Bruno. Who are literally the only recognised central of the park players we have on the books right now. So let's say 3 of those are first team, that still only leaves 2 back ups. We need squad players. It's a free and relatively inexpensive signing that I have no issue with at all.
