Some aircraft have used exactly that system in the past, but its only ever been done up to about Mach 3.

Theoretically a Mach 10 capsule could be designed, it was looked at for the Space Shuttle, but it would be very hard to do.
Yeh so in the most advanced aircraft in US development they would plausably have the most advanced safety systems to protect the pilot. Especially given the dangerous nature of the aircraft.

That's that then #topgunislegit

I do wonder how the viewing of this will be on TV. I got a big screen, and a nice sound package. But this movie is a proper cinema experience

Its like avatar (the movie was meh but the whole 3D experience and word of mouth made it huge).

I thought the original was a 7/10 and I think this one is, too. It's Rocky, it's Rambo, it's Team America. It's one man, bucking against the system, thumbing his nose up at the powers-that-be. He's brilliant, he's broken, he inspires, he frustrates. It's not meant to be taken seriously and the main difference between this and the first film is that the actors are really in the planes this time. But the clichés are there in abundance and the laugh out loud moments are matched in quantity by the shaking your head in disbelief moments.

Like the first one, I'll never watch it again but I don't regret watching it.

I’m giving the original a rewatch right now. Much better than I remember!

What is ScreenX?
So you have your giant normal screen in front of you, but then you have additional screens on the walls to your left and right - giving you peripheral vision for some scenes (basically all the flying scenes)

This is the trailer for it in ScreenX to give a vague idea of what it is:

Never even heard of this before, but that looks like an amazing more immersive experience! Great film for it too.

It was similar to the ‘Goose hitting the blown off windshield when they ejected’ scene in the first movie. There’s about a half second delay from when the windshield blows off & the seat ejects. That windshield would be about a quarter of a mile back & hundreds of feet higher when the seat ejected. But they had to kill him somehow.
Am just reading the book, Top Gun Memos, which is about the making of the first movie.

In the original draft of the script, they had Goose dying from the plane crash landing on an aircraft carrier. The Navy forced them to change this, as they didn’t want as many crashes as the original script had included. So they had to find another way for Goose to be killed:

“Several people, including Willard, recalled only one situation in which a radio intercept officer had been killed where the pilot wasn't at fault. The pilot and RIO had ejected from a failing aircraft and the canopy, the part of the aircraft that covers the seat, struck and killed the RIO. The Navy learned from the incident, and changed its processes. Semcken rescarched it and found the records; The pilot had been exonerated. It was the perfect solution.”
So it was based on an actual incident.

Interesting. It must not have blown all the bolts & was still attached to the place or the seat popped first.

On balance, a rather terrible way to die.

Yep - sounds like something out of the ordinary went wrong for that to have happened.

Looking forward to watching this next weekend. MI Fallout was excellent. Tom Cruise's star refuses to wane, pretty amazing how he's maintained his standing.

That was such a fun watch. Really enjoyed it. Predictable at times but everything was pulled off very well.

Seen it again.

Best film in so, so long time. Made me change my sound on mobile after ages when "Morrowind" was unique. Now it's fast and the, just joking. People that like Fast and F have no ability to think.

Finally went to see this yesterday evening. What a ride! Saw it in IMAX, which certainly added a lot to the experience.

I mean the movie is unapologetically over the top and a bit silly, but it's also incredibly fun, engaging and well-crafted. It was basically like a shot of adrenaline and nostalgia straight to the jugular. It doesn't quite beat Fury Road for my favorite recent action movie, but it was certainly close. I can understand the people criticizing the plot and the jingoistic elements, but on the other hand, I was definitely able to recognize those problems while still enjoying the movie to the fullest. Also, Tom Cruise is just something else. Criticize and mock him for the scientology thing all you like, but the man brings an unparalleled energy and passion to his projects - one of the last true movie stars.

If I were to point out a few criticisms it would be:
  • Too many secondary pilot characters. Other than Rooster and Hangman there was really no time to build the characters of the others and besides Bob, I could never recall who was who.
  • There was a weird shift in tone towards the end, where it goes from dramatic (Maverick sacrificing himself for Rooster as part of their reconciliation arc) to comedic buddy-cop style get-away.
  • Not enough Jennifer Connelly.
10/10 would watch again.

I'm on 4 watches of this now and going to make it to at least 5 before it closes at the cinema.

Literally not even 1% bored of any part of it yet, it's just a masterpiece in film making.

Watched again last night with two mates I convinced to see it.

Both came away blown away, said it was great and they're really film geeks. They just thought it was excellent, one hasn't even seen the original. On second viewing it was just as special and probably the best movie of the year tbh.

I wanna see this in the cinema again. A movie that shows why cinema is great and needed.

We need more cinema type movies like this

Pointless but mildly entertaining popcorn nostalgia trip imo. Didn't hate it but I don't get the hype.
I’ts pure big Hollywood grease. Nothing redeeming in any way. I will bang the drum along with @Pogue Mahone on this one. As shit a retread as you’ll find.

I had very low expectations so I got more or less what I expected. Certainly wouldn't watch it again.

It's got good visuals but the plot makes absolutely no sense. Writing is pretty abysmal.

The original is a much better and more coherent film imo.

You just can't replicate the 80s in this era.

Considering the top ten that means absolutely nothing other than its bland garbage for idiots with no attention span
True. Doesn't make it any less surprising. Can't imagine a single person would have predicted this before it came out. Except maybe TC himself.
