I mean does it matter if you're open to joining one club if you have a dream of joining another? I mean it seems sensible to be open to the next best thing? Not everyone can play for the club they supporter as a youngster. Aaah I dunno.

Plettenberg's comments also do not make sense since Bayern already has Mane.
They claimes he was offered not that Bayern want him.
If he isn't 100% committed, he has to go. ETH's football is so physically demanding and Ronaldo can sulk if isn't happy.
Bringing him back was a bad idea.

Love that he gets from our fanbase is astonishing. Guy forced transfer once (famous slave comments), now his agent (not without Ronaldo's approval) offers him to Bayern. So he wants to jump ship again. And some of you still say "poor Ronaldo, we don't deserve him".
Meanwhile our absolute legend Rooney, who gave his whole career to this club, is still bashed because he once gave transfer request. After which he still stayed here.

I wish he fecks off to Bayern or Psg or anywhere and we buy proper no9. Sick of this egomaniac
I think a lot of fans want him around not because of some emotional attachment, but rather a pragmatic fact that we don't have a goalscorer if he leaves. He's quite comfortably the best attacker we have, and it would be a massive loss to sell him without a good replacement (which looks very unlikely).

I think a lot of fans had already predicted that he wanted to leave when we didn't qualify for CL. Can't blame him as well, he's always been like that.

Hilarious. Actually it was Ronaldo himself who said it.
From what I saw from an Internet search, he Joined Madrid in 2009 (originally was meant to be 2008, but he promised Sir Alex he would stay one more year).

In 2010 he was asked about Barcelona and said, "anything is possible".

Prior to this, around 2008, LaPorta in his bid for presidency of Barca name dropped Cristiano.

I haven't seen anything more concrete than this.

I would say, that name dropping Barca was more a ploy, to ensure Madrid came for him.

Barca in 2006 were not the team they were 4 to 5 years later despite a CL win

Madrid have been mostly consistent for decades at that point.

Appreciate the article, always interesting to see how things were portrayed in the past.

He should go, ETH should move him on or phase him out throughout the season and hopefully by January he is not a starter anymore.

Ronaldo is good for another season, more so by inspiring the younger players in training etc

I doubt we will sign a striker this summer, but who knows what is gonna happen with United.

Barca in 2006 had just won the CL and league while finishing 12 points above Real, and Real hadn’t won a league title in 3 years.

And there's little hope he's gonna give full effort in the months leading to his last World Cup.

He's the one looking to leave but United should be the ones pushing for him to go.

He will leave late in the window to a champions league club when it is too late for us to replace him.

Not to mention that Real had a number of earlier CL exits by 2006 following their 2002 win, which ultimately ended in 7 consecutive round of last 16 exits including Ronaldo's first season in Madrid 09/10.

No lies told. He can do no wrong in some people's eyes. Unfortunately no one is crazy enough to pay him £500k

Yep, i find it a baffling bitterness some fans seem to hold because he left us once.

Imagine the state we'll be in if he does go.
We can just about afford De Jong and maybe someone else, yet they're happy for us to lose Ronaldo.

You get the feeling some would be delighted if he went and we brought someone like DCL in. Someone with a1/10th of the quality but a lot more "honest" effort.

2006 -2008 Barca were poor

You are talking about 2005 / 2006 season which is before what we are talking about from 2006 /07 season on wards

Funny coming from a guy who likes and defends Pogba and Jose endlessly, two people who did so much less for United than Ronaldo first time around.

I also find the lovefest Ronaldo gets from United fans a bit cringe, but it‘s not hard to understand. Also he was a much better player and had a much better overall career than Rooney. And people tend to overlook mistakes of and forgive better players (and managers). This has always been the case.

The only reason he shouldn't be here is that he could do better. We will desperately need him next season.

Very true. Having him this season enables us to focus on other area this summer with whatever limited budget we have.

I only hope he's okay with being rested for some games, especially the smaller ones cause I can't see him playing every game sustainably.

He can sit most of the Europa ones out, and the other cups.
Bring him back in if needs be. But it's more important to keep him at top level for the more important games.

He was really poor for large parts of last season overall but he was still one of our best players… he’s on crazy money and is obviously declining. Silly nostalgic transfer on the balance as I said at the time especially as we are terrible at playing to his strengths and he and Bruno haven’t exactly set the world alight at international level. I also think having Ronaldo has held us back from investing big money in a proper 9 when there were two great options on the market this summer (even if they didn’t particularly want to come here I think we could have made a much more compelling case minus Ronaldo)

I don’t really mind if he goes but I dread to think what free transfer nonsense we will come up with if he does

I didn't defend or liked Pogba much. I just didn't want him to leave because i thought (and still do) that he will finally start playing according to his talent. Love is really hard word for it.
Jose though....  :wenger:.

Btw, for what they did for United, Rooney tops Ronaldo by far.

The hate Ronaldo a club legend and a GOAT is getting on this thread is shocking. Just because of some transfer rumours linking him with other clubs. How is that the players fault?! That's the media selling newspapers because Ronaldo sells newspapers and it's silly transfer season. Ronaldo is just trying to enjoy a family vacation after a long hard season. He can't comment on every rumour.

Manchester United and its fans should be praying and begging Ronaldo stays because Ronaldo deserves a better way to end a GOAT career and because it would leave United in a mess.. he is too good to play Europa League football captained by Harry Maguire who has more relegations on his CV than Trophies. Yet some bizarre fans here think a Europa League club is "too big" for Ronaldo after he just scored 24 goals in the worst United side in living memory and winning Manchester United Player of the Season. Those United fans DONT DESERVE having a GOAT like Ronaldo play for this club. Ungrateful. He turned down City to join United where he would've won everything and won the Golden Boot with ease.

and as for the above poster saying Rooney topped CR7 at United "by far" I love the last "by far" bit.. it's wrong anyway but the "by far" part just shows the bizarre agendas some so-called Manchester United fans have against Ronaldo  don't worry though, these same fans criticising him now will be cheering when he's playing in a better team and actually gets better service with the team winning games because they can actually defend a clean-sheet with the goals Ronaldo scores. The team is the problem not Ronaldo. Look at the likes of Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw etc first or do only foreign players get this level of hate and endless threads created about them?! Xenophobia.

Fortunately Erik Ten Hag will know better than some of the rubbish spouted in the last few pages of this thread.

Nah. Rooney had a few good years and more bad years. Ronaldo had 3 mediocre/good years and 3 great years for United. Rooney‘s professionalism is also overstated but just like other good players fans mostly ignored it while he was still playing well (for all his work rate there was being overweight, drinking, partying, not being fit / taking a lot of games to gain match fitness, etc.) So Rooney was hardly an angel himself.

TBH if i was Ronaldo i wouldnt be wasting another year here. Especially when our squad is so bad and this summer is not going to fix it.

Many won’t accept it but if he leaves, it will be a a step forward for the club.

He does not fit the Ten Hag style and won’t want to have a bit part role, it’s clear as day how that is going to cause issues behind the scenes next season (and knowing Ronny, probably in front of all the world’s eyes as well)

Would be an incredibly dumb signing and one I cannot imagine Tuchel would ask for. As incredible as his goal scoring instincts still are, he doesn’t fit into our formation or playing style at all.

All this is correct except he’s our only striker and I don’t see any alternatives out there. Yes, if Nunez came in fair enough but he hasn’t. We need a right winger, 2 CM, RB and a CB which the budget is already struggling to accommodate - how can we replace Ronaldo too on what would be a very modest transfer fee should he go?

United will surely dig their heels in

Would leave for barely a transfer fee and would be another player we would need to sign with money we do not have
