Uh oh I'm doomed then  I liked the first couple of episodes and then started to call the "twists"

the twists with Bernard being a host, the church and town being buried because of some incident 30 years ago they mentioned in the pilot, Hopkins being every single mental character he always is are all telegraphed right from the start it's annoying

The Man in Black thing though is bloody brilliant! Just watched it.
Which thing are you talking about? Can't remember what happens in what episodes now  i loved the first season

just his whole arc, and finding out that whilst they say the game isn't for him he looks bloody over the moon when he gets shot at the end

The music is amazing, too. I'm still thinking about the violin quartet playing Motion Picture Soundtrack when Maeve is walking around. Absolutely beautiful scene.

The music adds a whole other level to the show imo, it's absolutely immense.

The Paint It Black scene in the first episode I think, got me hooked.

Same here with Paint It Black. Although I think Ground Control to Major Tom in series 3 topped it just.

I don't think the story is mean to be told in a way that relies on twists. Like Ford's development especially was never meant to be a huge "gotcha" surprise or even hidden. It wasn't merely telegraphed it was properly spelled out. One step at a time.

First two seasons were brilliant.

First six episodes of the third season were brilliant. Lost its way in the final two episodes.

She spent the whole of the second season telling us she wanted to make a world for herself. Then changes her mind in the last two episodes of season 3.

True I think the show doesn't rely on twists like a lot of modern shows - a remnant from the days before bringing when Lost had thousands of people online trying to find the simplest clues leading up to next week's episode.

Like you said, arcs such as Ford's didn't rely on that which makes it strange. For what it's worth I enjoyed Season 2 a bit more overall except for the ending.

That's actually what I like about Westworld; it's not relying on big gotcha moments. It has some but they're used sparingly. The storytelling feels quite natural once it hits it's rhythm. I think at the start it felt like it was slowly descending into a twisty show but it eventually started to feel different. Not watched season 3 yet though...

Haven't watched/rewatched for a good while but iirc this show suffered from having a great start and finish to seasons with a lot of padding in the middle. One of many modern shows that may have been improved by having 2-4 fewer episodes per season. Don't get me wrong I still enjoyed it immensely.

Season 3 recap:

It's always helpful watch a few recaps videos of a series before starting a new season of it.

I really can't wait but I'm worried that this season seems to have a dozen different writers like Seasons 2 and 3 did. I can't think of a better single season of a show than the first one of Westworld, and it helped because Joy and Nolan wrote almost every episode.

We're all going to need this. I have no memory of the last season.

Hmmm, not sure what to expect. I try to like this but that trailer was a bit of a turn-off.
That horde of flies out of the mouth scene was so corny and we've seen it a million times before

The music done absolutely nothing for me in that trailer. Sounds like someone just put their favourite song over the trailer so we all had to listen to it.

Some nice visuals later in the trailer, but the first half was gash.

I thought the last season was the finale? What story even needs to be told? They rushed through story last season so quick that I didn't know what was going on or care enough to try and figure it out. I liked the western setting with the mystery behind it. Don't really want to see the same cast in the real world again

I think the showrunners have talked about having planned the series to last for five seasons.

I'd actually claim the opposite. Didn't they end last season with the breaking of the old (AI controlled) world order?

So the trailer starts with scenic images, that most people probably associate with freedom, and "it's just a perfect day" lyrics.

"when it gets dark we go home" introduction William / man in black

"feed animals in the zoo", we see the bird's eye perspective shot, where people walk orderly on a straight and narrow concrete path - like well trained animals in a cage

"you made me forget myself, I thought I was someone else, someone good" that's like every other character arc in Westworld, also maybe a reference to the hopeful opening shots

And then they turn up the volume, playing the cheerful lyrics against the violent images to create a cynical contrast and they complete that by gradually replacing the music with disturbing sound

"I'm glad I spent it with you" - we see a shot with Clementine with another woman that's terrified of her

"you just keep me hanging on" - looks like shots of William/Dolores clones waking up

until they close with "you're going to reap just what you sow", which is the very core of Westworld's philosophy (these violent delights will have violent ends)

I can't think of another show that's so effective with its choice of music.

Nice breakdown. I'm not a huge fan of the song but they got it spot on for the preview.

Anyone else watched this yet?
It's a slow start so far but it's setting up to bring most of the old crowd back together.

Yep, decent start by Westworld standards by which I mean its interesting but you have no idea what's going on and have started making theories. And I'm just annoyed I forgot HBO shows are released weekly and was hoping to binge it last night.

Alas no. I looked also and saw that the second episode was next week.
They do have a good way of drawing you in by getting you to hypothesise what is actually happening.

Yeah stayed up till 2am, always do with Westworld even though it got a bit up its own arse in seasons 2 and 3.

As for where the story is going, I have no idea and it could literally go anywhere. It's great.

Pretty sure the world Delores/Christina is in is the Futureworld or some version of that in a simulation. Esp. considering those some dudes talking about how wild it was and why you haven't been here before. And also makes sense from the point that MIB is looking for a key to decrypt that data and probably Delores is the one who has the key but is dead. So, a simulation with Delores in it to coerce the key from her?

Apparently I never watchde Season 3, it any good?
Me too, well I can't remember watching it, had a look at the recap and my head started spinning. Will watch season 3 !

Season 3 is pretty good, but nowhere near the first season still, season 1 was peak viewing imo. Season 4 however is looking good so far, kinda season 1 vibes.

Complicated as feck though.

On a glance S3 does not have as many highly rated episodes, but there were some great moments. Plus you’d have to watch it to understand what is going on.

Just kidding. I’ve watched it and have no idea what the hell is going on. But this S4 is starting to get good.
