There's no way Arteta was signing him to be a CB.

Both Arsenal and United are most likely interested in him as a midfielder.
What makes you so sure?

ETH if you listen to Ajax fans dropped him from DM then reintegrated him as a CB.

I think it's pretty much a guarantee that he would join United as a defensive midfielder. ETH has an interview stating that FDJ is best when paired with a defensive cover. There's been briefings throughout this window that the midfield has been identified as the most important area for investment.

Maguire is undoubtedly a questionable player but he and Varane should be good enough to persist with until January to then observe the Timber situation. Lindlelov also in the background it's not exactly a world class defence but on paper it should suffice especially if the midfield is robust it means the backline is exposed less frequently.

Ok I found a video of him playing as a defensive midfielder, against Chelsea. I guess this gives those who have not seen him in that position, like me, a better indication of how he plays as a midfielder

I wouldn't be surprised if we're targeting Martinez to play alongside Frenkie as 2 deep lying midfielders. The other option would be if Ten Hag considers 3 at the back as our main approach for the season.
I would be extremely surprised if so. De Jong is at his best on the left side of central midfield as would Martinez be, who is left footed.

I get why we might be interested because of his versatility, but seems way over priced to me.

We could play him in the middle of a back 5 in a sort of hybrid CB/DM position.

Looks really good. Calm, great passing range.
Him and De Jong together. Yes please.

I would choose Martinez over Timber and Antony.
Timber might have a higher ceiling. But at the moment he isn't any better than Martinez.
Martinez is also very versatile.

Antony has great potential. But isn't worth the 80m price tag in my humble opinion.
I mean he's great. But not 80m great.

Potentially a back 3 maybe if we get him maybe to allow us to play a De Jong and Eriksen two in midfield?

I didn't read you saying "here he is playing in midfield" and was about to post a comment saying his positioning is remarkably like a midfielder

Having seen exactly 40 seconds of him on YouTube, I have decided he would be a great signing for us. Cover in defense, cover in midfield. Just the sort of utility player we need considering our injury issues. Price seems steep though.

What price tag would you say suits his potential and current quality

He was great in the first half of last season (especially during the CL).
Second half he was a bit meh... and also injured a lot.

He's a great and skillful player. But his end product is lacking. He certainly need to improve in that department if he wants to succeed in the PL.

I think +-50m (60m max) might be a great price. But i understand why Ajax is asking 80m.

The people that say height don't matter, are just as annoying as those that say pace doesn't matter, or everything else that doesn't matter.

In top level football, everything matters. Can you get by with a player shorter than the average CB, yes you can but it puts pressure on the player to be so much better than average in other areas.

Just because we are linked to a player doesn't mean we have to dismiss legitimate concern. To downplay his height, especially in the PL seems disingenuous. This doesn't mean he's being written off but it definitely is something to be worried about.

For teams that play a high line pressing aggressively, one of the ways to get at them is to play long balls over the top. Speed and ability in the air is needed to combat that. The best team in the league at defending this way is Liverpool with VVD, Matip and Konate who all have speed and excellent aerial ability.

Martinez might be a hit in the PL but to dismiss his height seems a bit silly to me.

Out of interest has Martinez played more as a DM or CB for Ajax? Is the plan to play him alongside De Jong or as a partner for Varane?

If we plan to play him a CB and not a DM his height would concern me , but I heard an Argentinian journalist say despite his height he is excellent in the air and never looks out of place no matter who he is up against. But a 5'7 CB in the premier league is very unusual.

He isn't 5'7.

Centre back. In the league he last played there in 19/20 and played 22 games total in midfield for Ajax

Campos was great.

Height is a factor, but not a major one.
