I hope this is the type of transfer strategy we adopt moving forward ie wait until 2 clubs agree a price for a player we might want then move in and hijack the deal last minute

Exactly. Asking to be informed about negotiations rather than starting the bidding makes much more sense.
this is clearly not a viable strategy long term and hoping this becomes a permanent moving forward will have us missing out on a lot of players. Not every guy will be willing to drop their plans or have their head turned just because United entered the fray, after being courted by someone else for months.

Did it successfully for years mate. Did it with Keane after Blackburn. Ronaldo after Arsenal. Rooney after Newcastle. It was only when Woodward came along and started swinging his wallet around like an appendage replacement that we started getting taken royally to the cleaners.
