We are already backing the manager, we've gotten one of the brightest midfielders in Europe per his request. We're also getting Eriksen, per his request. We're also getting Malacia, per his request. "Backing the manager" doesn't mean we should cater to his every whims however nonsensical they may be. It's alright to have reservations of a player that barely dribbles (despite his flashy youtube highlights, he actually doens't take on his players at all), has underwhelming pace, and barely scores in a position that requires dribbling, pace, and finishing ability. At the very least that's what is required when you want an elite winger. All for a premium price of 80m euros.

Let's not forget about him wanting a CB that's 1.75 tall, probably making him one of the shortest CBs in Europe in a league with 1.90+ tall CBs, strikers, and wingers. How the hell are we supposed to defend set pieces with that?

Their combined asking price would be 130m euros.130m could get us Osimhen and at least one other player. It could get us Moussa Diaby and at least one other player. Players in positions we desperately need with the raw physical and technical talent to excel in our team.

I think it's reasonable to say no in this scenario.
I don't think it's about giving into the whims of the manager. It was likely part of the conditions of ETH's arrival. I think it's known that he had certain demands and it would be reasonable to guess that one of these might have been control over transfers for this summer as that will play a large part in getting the team playing how he wants.

We also don't really operate from a great position of credibility to say our scouting department is wonderful and blessed with acumen to identify better players. Our success rate has been poor. It doesn't mean that every summer we'll be going for ETH's targets exclusively, it just means that this summer that's probably the way it is and hopefully the system is being overhauled.

Also there's nothing at all to say these random players you refer to are better players or more suitable then what ETH is coming up with. You've just thrown them out there as if they're obviously better but..well...they may not be.

Agree with this. If we get de Jong, Malacia, Timber and Antony that’s a good start in this window. Can’t fix everything in one summer.

Yeah I think we will go for his targets this summer because need players who already know what he's about to help shape this new team

Ronaldo would love playing with Anthony. They could strike up a deadly partnership

We need to get more crosses into the box for Ronaldo. I can't believe how nobody has made that a priority signing this summer.. Ronaldo was living off scraps last season and still scored 24 goals.. imagine if he had decent service how many he would score?!

It's all about other positions people are talking about it and neglecting the attack in terms of a proper creating left-footed winger. Rashford has his head down and just shoots everytime it's an ego thing.. we need more unselfish players in attack to create a better team morale and dressing room which was probably the main reason we was so rubbish last season was the squad off the pitch was at its lowest.. don't underestimate how much a divided dressing room can impact on performance.

Ajax ripped us off with Van der beek in hindsight and they should be willing to take him back plus a smallish fee in return for Anthony;)
I think van der beek was just on a completely different wavelength to his teammates here. If you watch Ajax training drills and the first Ten Hag drill at United, you will see the passing and movement. Van der beek ran in to space and never got the return pass. With Ten Hag's style of play, I can see van der beek coming back in to form.

Antony is like poor man's Nani.Looks good on youtube highlight, but when you watch him play and check his stats, they are not great.

I'd stay away at the rumoured asking price.

The Sun reporting that this has fallen through:

Anthony deal set to collapse
Man United are set to end their pursuit of Brazilian winger Antony due to his huge price tag, according to reports.
Antony, 22, has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer.
The Dutch giants are demanding around £70million for his services.
And according to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, Man Utd are reluctant to pay that sum of money.

I've never seen the guy play so not sure what to think of this one. I do think I'd rather have a No.9 than him but that doesn't seem to be on the cards either...

For the love of life. Let us now go for Serge Gnabry.

If we're going to get one player from Ajax this summer it's Martinez.

And if we can get Gnabry for less than Antony all the more.

Gakpo plays primarily on the left. Do not need.

Now include their CL stats.

Also they play different positions.

Gakpo played in Europa.

Antony (UCL)
  • 7 games (577 min)
  • 2 goals
  • 4 assists
  • 7.60 rating (1 MoM)

Gakpo (EL)
  • 4 games (305 min)
  • 2 goals
  • 0 assists
  • 7.61 rating (1 MoM)

I can't say I have seen much of either of these guys, just was comparing the stats from the same division. From what I can tell, both play similar position, though different sides. Gakpo also seems more versatile in that he has played through the center and a bit on the right. Antony more suited to holding possession and short passing; Gakpo maybe the better dribbler with higher defensive work rate. With Ajax seemingly asking too high a price, I was thinking maybe we go for a similar age/position player from the Dutch league ETH would be familiar with.

We should have moved early on when we had the chance. That price is just unrealistic. Very disappointing and we will come to regret this years down the line I think.

Think this deal is dead. Feel a bit for him. Obviously wanted to come here but due to them already selling loads it's not going to happen.

Fair play to Ajax, they don't need to take a cut-price deal for him.

Or we put a bit of pressure on the player that he pushes for a move. Ajax does not need to sell cheap though

How well does he hold up in close spaced and under physical pressure? I think the worry with attacking players from lesser leagues is that they don't have the space so that can they weave in and out of tight areas and deal with defenders getting tight and physical. That's why Memphis was so poor for us - enjoyed all the space in the smaller league but didn't have the technical chops or pace to burn Pl defenders.

The guy isn't even fit yet and won't be able to play for another month.

Why be so desperate to sign him before he can even do anything? maybe we are waiting to see if he can recover properly first.

Only partially true, Memphis received a competely different role and also gained far more muscle the summer he came to the PL.

He was a wide forward at PSV, with the tendency to move central, a bit like Ronaldo. Van Gaal used him as a winger/Ribery type of player, which he has never been and was even less suited to with his added muscle and weight. When he played more central or against weaker opposition it was promising, but ultimately not enough.

He didnt live up to his potential, the PL is harder than other leagues, true. But also terrible planning, which has been a theme for the past 10 years. Only now do I trust in what the club is doing after appointing Murthough and Ten Hag, and getting rid of Woodward and OGS/Mourinho/van Gaal.

Ajax are exaggerating on price tag for Anthony. Raphina would be better option. Atleast he has premier league experience

I don’t think this deal is dead tbh. But we will see. A small compromise, plus a combo of basic and add-ons could get a deal done at £65m I suspect.

Think they might be forced to pay up now if Ronaldo goes.
Perhaps, or put the money towards another target. They would already have a list of who they would have wanted to replace him next summer I suspect. They may have to being that plan forward now.

The more i watch his "Antony every touch vs" videos the less I am impressed by him. Really seems to be a youtube highlights player, he just doesn't excite me at all. Barely attempts an actual dribble, doesn't seem to have a burst of acceleration, and seems to crumble on the floor after every touch he gets from the opposition. I just don't see him working in the premier league at all.
