I find this situation bizarre, if he knew he wanted a champions league clubs only why not have an exit clause in his contract for if we failed to qualify? While the full extent of last season’s disastrous showing was unexpected, us finishing outside the top 4 was entirely possible. I mean the contract he signed with us had a wage reduction if we failed to qualify, so the idea couldn’t have been that shocking to him?

I think it’s something else than lack of champions league which is causing this. I’d guess he’s been told he won’t be a guaranteed starter and has flipped. The champions league narrative protects his name and makes it the team’s fault rather than admitting that he is no longer top dog.
That's a good point and most likely what happened. He knew with 3 or 4 games to go i.e. start of May that we weren't qualifying for the CL so why wait two months to say he wants to leave? Your theory makes sense.

As for the clause, well that's another feck up then by Mendes isn't it. I have a feeling he will end up in Bayern yet, once his wage demands decrease further.

What’s folks thoughts about the reception he’s gonna get when he reluctantly has to play for us this season? Currently, I think he will face some booing and verbal abuse, unless his PR team do some major back peddling.
He won’t get prawn sandwiches thrown at him - unfortunately

There is no smoke without fire.

Initially Family issues did have a ring of plausibility around it. Remember they did lose a child a few months back. In those circumstances you might understand the club making an agreement with him to allow him an extended period away once the season had finished.

Soap opera always follows Mendes and Ronaldo around and the media abhors a vacuum and will generate noise for clicks so it can be refuted and turned into more clicks.

Thinking back has there ever been a direct, attributable quote from either of them on the subject? I've been following this relatively closely and i can't remember one.

The litmus test will be next week when United are back in Carrington.

Let his agent dig out someone. We can get about 15-20 million and we get his wages off our books. Then he can feck off :)

The longer this goes on the more likely it feels that "the break" is actually Ronaldo on strike.

Seems pretty disrespectful of his agent to be punting him around to all and sundry - unsuccesssfully - when he's going through a personal issue serious enough to miss over two weeks of work.

Nonchalantly scoring the winner...
Feel some of the posts in here are getting a bit toxic toward Ronaldo.

Him and his partner lost a child just a few months ffs.

And he was your top scorer last season.

I agree it’s better for both parties if he leaves, but the resentment and nastiness toward him given the above is just bizarre.

It is trending that way.

He is 37 and wants to leave. This isn't 2008 when we just became Champions of Europe. We should give him all the time possible to find a new club. If it means starting with Martial upfront then so be it.

Since his first stint here we’ve had players that have wanted out and with added drama. We rarely used to have it at all before then. It was the manager who decided. Pogba plays 5 games and goes on the record asking Madrid to buy him. Rooney when we didn’t sign players he liked. Ronadlo part 2. It’s just so annoying

Think if we’re being serious about this rebuild, then we gotta feck him off.

Absolute joker wanting to leave a club who made him because he thinks he’s too good.

He's starting to annoy me now. I get you may want to leave and play Champions League football but to not even come back for pre-season? I hate it man. I really wish we can just get rid and sign a replacement. We don't need his toxicity around the club.

But brilliant the season before. Everyone was poor last seaon, apart from maybe DDG.

You carry on with your agenda, though.
No, he was not. That was when he had that Greek incident where he tried to bribe a police officer and got his ass handed to him in jail and came back crying. People have such short memories here. He was diabolical at the start of that season and excuses were made for him saying how he was traumatized by what happened in Greece. He was making numerous errors (remember the 6-1 drubbing Spurs gave to us?) and costing goals just like he did last season. But yes, am the one with an agenda who refuses to back an impressive footballer with 4 relegations on his CV.

Not to mention past instances when he and his family have insulted United fans on Twitter.

How he has fans I have no idea. Maybe being British comes with special privileges.

He is destroying his legacy this summer. Nobody wants him and the fans of the only club that still tries to keep him will probably turn on him if he ends up staying.

Ronaldo won’t accept substitutions, being asked to press or starting games on the bench… so therefore we have to say goodbye…..

In Ten Hag we trust…

Wait so are there family issues or is he refusing to return? Can’t believe we’re going through all this with Ronaldo again.
At this point I'm fairly certain there are no real family issues. If there were any, we would have known by now. It's just Ronaldo refusing to play for us again. But there are some people who still believe he has some genuine family issues though.

Agree in some respects but the more it drags on the more it doesn't sit well with me. I know he hasn't many playing years left but would it kill him to stay one more year at the club and see out his contract? I've said it many times but if he's serious about doing well in the World Cup the fact that he'll be playing just once a week this season is a good thing, surely?

In a few years this will be forgiven and we'll remember the times that he had some of the best individual seasons anyone has ever had at this club (2006-2008) and his 4 POTY awards here in 7 seasons. That's if he doesn't make things worse in the next few weeks :nervous:.

He should be booed for being a twat. But he'd probably be applauded for reluctantly accepting to stay after no one wanted him. In the eyes of his gullible fans he can do no wrong
This ... Ronaldo fan boys and girls are akin to a brainwashed cult

The club can not allow him to come back and play this season. I hope they’re being proactive behind the scenes. No self respecting club would welcome him back at this stage. There were question marks about his suitability for the new project even before all this nonsense. I understand there may be short term pain if a suitable replacement can’t be found but there will be long term damage if they allow him to stay and derail what Ten Hag is trying to build. The big worry is that it looks like no one is silly enough to take him off our hands. I suppose situations like this is what the club deserves for it’s horrendous recruitment over the last decade.

Get him out. He’s toxic and only cares about himself. I cant stand the Goldbridge fanboyclub creaming over him non stop. The dude is a legend but it’s obvious it wont work anymore.

Hope he goes to Atletico, way to ruin your reputation.

Nobody is bigger than the club.

If Fergie applauds him, would it make you the abnormal one ?
No ... Who cares if Fergie applauds him? You'd have to be a sheep to blindly applaud just because Fergie applauds him. I respect Fergie, but he's entitled to his own opinion. Ronaldo's disrespecting the club and not for the first time, we owe him nothing.

You are also entitled to your own opinion, but painting everyone in the same light is dangerously narrow minded imo.
