I could see us go to a back 3, if you consider our midfield options and strikers, it would suit us for this season. Varane, Maguire and Martinez.
Been thinking this too. Especially if we don't sign a forward. Something like...

De Gea

Varane Maguire Martinez

Dalot Eriksen Fred (De Jong) Shaw

Sancho Bruno

Martial

Sancho & Bruno to just roam.

Looks like he wasn't impressed with Maguire and Shaw last season as they were our left sided defenders and he immediately bought Martinez and Malacia. Those two have the aggression that he's mentioned a few times.
Well its true, both looked half fit/bothered after doing really well for England in the summer. But they also had bad cover from the wingers and midfielders who arent that good at sensing danger and mopping up.

Hopefully Shaw and Maguire were both tired and unfocused and now we get the best of them this season instead of the worst of them last season

He hasn't played that formation yet. If we don't get it in the pre season I doubt it'll be our set up

Man Utd were held back by a broken defence last season - Martínez could be the player to fix that
Manchester United’s summer transfer window hasn’t exactly gone to plan. If newspaper reports are to be believed, the club have failed miserably in their attempts to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong and star forward Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly been offering his services to just about every major club in the hope that someone would rescue him from Old Trafford.

However, while the media coverage may suggest that Man Utd have had very little success in the transfer window, new manager Erik ten Hag may disagree entirely. Not only have the Red Devils managed to bag former Feyenoord full-back Tyrell Malacia but they also signed the heart of their new manager’s former defence in Ajax central defender Lisandro Martínez. Man Utd have undoubtedly upgraded at least two defensive positions ahead of the new season. While fans of the Old Trafford side may be holding out hope that new midfielders and forwards will arrive before the end of the transfer window, Ten Hag’s clear efforts to make sure the club prioritise defensive signings certainly makes sense when we look at the club’s struggles in the Premier League last season and failure to finish in the top four.

A dreadful defence - in need of serious upgrades

Indeed, while Man Utd finished in a rather dismissal sixth place last season, the club’s defensive record of 57 conceded goals in 38 league games was actually only the eighth best in the division and clearly underlines where this team will need to improve if they are to make a step up this season. In contrast to Manchester City and Liverpool’s identical averages of 0.64 conceded goals per 90 or Chelsea’s 0.8 per 90 from last season, Man Utd conceded on average 1.39 goals per game. And when we look at how many points it ended up costing the club, we can see why they desperately needed new defenders.

Last season Man Utd fell behind in 18 of their 38 league games. Not only is that far more than Liverpool (12) or Man City’s (eight) form over the course of the season, but the club also only managed to overturn the result on two occasions, while only clawing back to claim a draw a further four times. Which means in 14 games last season, Man Utd went behind and stayed behind. As a result, the club dropped a massive 44 points from simply being far too open in defence. It’s with that in mind that Ten Hag has clearly opted to spend his new club’s transfer budget on defenders, before forking out for a new No.9 or even another winger to bolster the club’s attacking ranks. Defensive stability is usually a strong bedrock for good teams to grow into great ones and at Man Utd it seems to be the new manager’s priority.

This really is an elite signing, don't think people appreciate enough just how good he is. He has the potential to be up there with some of our greatest CBs.

Unless those are new quotes ETH subsequently said Martinez didn't have the legs for midfield.

The reality is that Martinez is a CB, he was a CB before he arrived at Ajax, he played at CB for something like 85%+ of his games at Ajax, it was generally recognised that he was better at CB by everyone including both him and ETH, he was linked to us as part of our very obvious search for a CB, we moved on to him when our approach for the other Ajax CB came to nothing, it was widely reported that the alternative to him was another CB Pau Torres, upon his arrival here ETH said he was signed to help address a problem in the left side of our defence and even before he arrived we saw our current CBs adjust the side they played on in such a way as to suggest that Martinez would slot into the left CB position.

All of that should make it pretty clear what his primary position is intended to be.

Been praised

Don't know what he is talking about, but Martinez has been praised for his speed on many occasions.
I dont really recall that, nor would it matter.. Ive watched basically every second of him at Ajax and like I said.. He is definetely not slow, but calling him very quick is massively exaggerated..

Really like him.

Looks composed. Genuine question. How quick is he?
Agile, good acceleration and quick reactions. Not especially quick in full stride but not slow either, just pretty normal. More important is the agility and the first steps which he is good at.

I thought his movement looked strange for their goal.

Good debut but being passive/poor positioning at their goal.

Really composed on the ball which is so good to see compared to all the nervous wrecks we have in the squad

I'd give him 4th most blame for the goal after Telles letting the lef footer dribble inside onto his left foot and get a shot away in space, Varane who's RCB side is where the shot went and the goalkeeper who should have taken it comfortably.

I'm not sure he expected such passive, abysmal defending from Telles. If he ever has the misfortune of playing alongside Alex again he will not make that mistake twice.

I think he did everything he needed to do with no fuss at all.

Can't give him any blame for the goal - he was correctly covering a run being made behind him and he has every right to expect Telles or any of the midfielders to close the player down before he should be doing there.

Yeah, it was Lindelof-esque defending there from Telles.

Excellent on the ball. Its baffling why so many of our attacks started with Varane who was treating the ball like a hot potato.

Loved the aggression too.

Not specifically.. Would call him slow for sure, but speeds isnt something that sets him apart..
Slow?? I saw him take on Benfica when he was running back to the goal a number of times and he ate up ground quite well. Maguire is slow. Martinez is not rapid but he was quite nippy I thought.

Heaton couldn't see anything on his left.
