What can Richard Arnold do to re-assure us?

For a decade, I believed firmly that our biggest problem was one man - Ed Woodward. His sheer incompetence was frightening at times, making the kind of amateur mistakes over and over again that showed a lack of even basic business skills, let alone football knowledge, for example, boasting about how big our budget was going into a transfer window.

Now, this post is not about critiquing Ed Woodward's time at the club. I'd need a week to write that and we would mostly be going over old ground. However, like many on here, I celebrated Woodward's departure as the start of a new dawn for the club. Finally, we were free of this clown and we could start to make good, sound, logical football decisions again. Sure, they wouldn't all work out, but there would be a strategy, some clear objectives and we'd finally have intelligent, capable people running the club.

We got off to a decent start to the Arnold/Murtough era with the arrival of Ralf Rangnick. It seemed the club agreed with many of us on here that there was a lack of footballing knowledge and expertise amongst the senior management team. Rangnick had a proven track-record of building football clubs and it was very clear from his short-time with us has a deep understanding of the mechanics of the game. The understanding amongst the fanbase was that since no suitable mid-season replacement was available for Solskjaer, Rangnick would essentially take on a slightly unfamiliar role as 'Head Coach' but would stay-on at the club in a consultant role, advising the Board on how to put the right footballing structure in-place to support the new manager.

During his time at the club, Rangnick was particularly critical of the clubs' recruitment team/strategy, much like Moyes and Jose before him. Rangnick was clear that the clubs' scattergun approach to signing players had left us with a 'FrankenSquad' of has-been's, never-will-be's, unmotivated players and players who's contrasting styles made it hard for them to play together effectively. This is unsurprising, given we have basically had the manager and Ed Woodward choosing players for the last decade. The vast, vast majority of top-level football clubs worked out sometime in the Noughties that managers' were poor at recruiting players, since they were only incentivised to think about the next three results, rather than the next three windows. We arguably STILL haven't figured that out.

Rangnick talked about needing '8, 9 or 10 new players' and I think this is ultimately what turned the Board off him, along with his less-than thinly-veiled criticisms of some of them! Unfortunately, there are already signs that the Board seemingly want to hear platitudes about 'getting more out of what we have through coaching', which is apparent as we've already heard ETH say this in interviews several times. I'd bet good money it was a key, recurring theme during the interview process and I'd bet good money that the Board would not have appointed anybody who agreed with Rangnick that the current group was completely unworkable as a unit.

The problem is, the Board appeared to have COMPLETELY missed Rangnick's point. It's not that all 23(+) of our senior players are poor footballers....it's that collectively they are poor and ill-suited to forming an effective unit. This, in-turn, is why I have defended the players at times. I actually feel sorry for some of them at times, they get hammered from all angles by pundits and fans, accused of not caring, accused of not trying...I don't believe that narrative for a second. I believe they absolutely DO care but that this is the best they can do, given their respective limitations and the limitations of the group.

What we needed was Rangnick's 'open-heart surgery' and what we have got, so far, is a minor facelift.

So, to the point of this thread, because none of this so far is thread-worthy in it's own right. Many of us have talked about the structural issues we have faced for years, I, like many, could produce several posts saying all of the above back in 2016/17. The point of this thread is to ask, what can Richard Arnold do to convince us that the Board HAVE learnt some lessons and DO have a plan?

For example-.

1.What do the Board think of the current playing squad? Do they understand Rangnick's point(s) about 'open-heart surgery' and why just signing more big-name players won't fix us?
2. Do they understand the need to identify a playing-style from the top-down, hire the right manager to implement that style and then support them by identifying the correct players to play that style effectively? (see Liverpool/City)
3. Do the Board understand why it is important that the manager doesn't choose the players? I suspect not...since so far we've signed only Dutch and/or ex-Ajax players...be a bit of a coincidence if that wasn't related to ETHs arrival wouldn't it!
4. Do the Board understand how and why we have gone wrong with our wage structure over the last decade? Do they understand why, for example, it's not a good idea to give a 29 year-old GK £375K per week or a 21 year-old new signing £350K per week? Do they understand why it's not a good idea to have a new player walk into the club on half a million a week?
5. Do the Board understand that the manager is just one, small(ish) piece of the puzzle in modern football, and that the manager is only as good or bad as the support they get from their team and the team above them?
6. Do they understand why we consistently and predictably waste so much time each Summer negotiating for players we ultimately don't get and/or do get but end-up wildly over-paying for?
7. Do they understand why the promising young players we have at the club consistently and predictably fail to reach their potential?
8. Do they understand why we consistently and predictably receive well-below market average fees for players we sell, if we can sell them at all?
9. Do they understand why it is highly-unlikely that the clubs' Academy will prove a reliable source of first-XI players and that we need to start thinking differently about how we view/use Academy graduates?
10. Do they understand why just randomly appointing ex-players to the clubs' staff creates chaos and confusion?

See, with all of the above, I am focused on the 'macro' not the 'micro'. I don't want to have a debate about, for example, whether Ronaldo was a good/bad signing. I want them to NOT be results-orientated but guided by processes, Data and principles in ALL of the decisions that they make on behalf of the club.

My concern is that we are seeing relatively large mistakes being made already, namely, too much faith in a new manager and too much weight on his opinion on recruitment. Time-wasted chasing FDJ. Rangnick's consultancy cut-short. Still no real football expertise at senior management level (I refuse to count Darren Fletcher just because he once kicked a ball about for us). Still chasing players in the transfer market after the first game of the season. Still struggling to shift deadwood.

I am willing to accept that with a completely new management team, including a new 'Head Coach', it is going to take time. Hence why I am willing to just about give them the benefit of the doubt for a very short period only. However, we need to know that the Board understand the issues we have and have a plan to fix them, even if that might mean some short-term pain for long-term gain.

What I would like, personally, is for Richard Arnold to come out and address those points I have made above. Prove to me that the club DO understand. Again, this is not a 'look how much I know' post...loads of us on here have discussed these issues for many seasons now and time-and-time again we have to watch in frustration as the people actually paid to make the decisions show absolutely no understanding that these issues even exist, let alone how to fix them.

So, what can Richard Arnold do for you/us to convince us this train isn't careering even further off the tracks? Personally, I see the same mistakes being repeated, I hope they prove me wrong!

Take quicker action when it's obvious things aren't working out.

If Murtough keeps fluffing the transfer windows, get him out.

The only way him and the board could save face this summer is if we get FDJ, which would show they did have a plan and stuck to their guns knowing he would eventually join. Even then, whether it was worth waiting all summer and starting the season with McFred in the centre of the park is highly debatable.

Even that would only elevate this transfer window to a "shambles" as opposed to a "complete and utter embarrassing failure".

If likes of Arnold and Murtough didn’t know what needed to be done when they took the jobs on after years and years working at the club then when are they ever going to know.

I always found it funny how Arnold and Murtough managed to con everyone into believing they are somehow much better at running a football club than Ed, even though they were a big part of that same failed structure. Fans had some very unrealistic expectations which were never going to materialise. I think we basically replaced Ed with someone as clueless as him.

This, but next year. He did the politically smart thing and walked away from the mess that is player recruitment at United.

@Lentwood I’m not sure I agree with 10. None of Giggs, Carrick or Ole was brought in “randomly”. The main issue with Fletcher is the idiotic title he’s been given; he’s neither technical nor a director.

Otherwise I think you’re completely spot on, and your list of questions is comprehensive and very well articulated.

The problem I have with those appointments is we didn't see any of the projects through...but we're splitting hairs really when there are so many issues at the club!

Hire a qualified Director of Football who has actually built a team before

Oversee a decent transfer window, on time and on budget. Ie: do their job.

Sacking Murtough and outsourcing the job to a competent person would be a fabulous start. If he does it soon enough, maybe the new person can sign some proper players in the winter.

Nothing for me because I just found out he blocked me from Linkedin. I did nothing, just told him how incompetent of a CEO he is.

At least Woodward's galactico transfer approach gave me some hope before the inevitable breakdown, now I feel hopeless from the very beginning.
We need a proper DOF and had one in Rangnick, but alas..

Take the top people from other top clubs. Everyone has their price, and some might like the challenge. This goes for players too. It's how city built their club from where they were. It takes a lot of money, but eventually the success makes it easier to be efficient in the transfer market in the long run.

Murtough has been at the club close to a decade now. He's part of the rot and there is no rebuild or refresh until he is thrown out and someone with the required credentials and vision is hired following a thorough interview process. If Arnold starts there, he'll have full fan backing as that's the safest way forward short of dumping the Glazers.

Ok last word on the subject as I don't want to derail the thread:

Giggs: agreed, but in the light of subsequent revelations we had a lucky escape. Ole: absolutely; we should have stuck with the interim-only plan. Carrick: it was his choice to leave, which I think was regrettable but understandable. He seems to be the decent sort who would have believed that the Last Days of Ole debacle was partly his fault.

The only thing he can do that will make me think he's not a clown is firing Murtough and hiring someone from the outside. No internal promotions.

Replacing one cog each time isn't working. "It's the manager", "It's player X", "It's the scouts", "It's the tea lady", "it's Mikky!"

We need impetus and accountability from *everyone* downstream of the CEO/DoF to overcome the rudderless inertia of the Glazers. Too many, at all levels, are just collecting pay packets.

Don't think so. I was one of many that sounded objection about Arnautovic transfer. Seems it worked.
Thats not what you claimed originally. You said you told him he's an incompetent CEO.

Man it’s
The point is long gone whereby any of these people have the chance to win fans onside. Him and murtough have been at the club for many many years and have been here for the entirety of the horrible decisions made previously. No more chances at all. They need to leave and so do the owners, if they cared at all, they would leave because dispite graeme souness saying be careful what you wish for this club deserves to be run the right way with football people at the helm of the football club

i don’t believe he has the remit to change what needs to be changed. the club’s culture is rotten and it doesn’t matter who the manager is, who the players are, who who the ceo is, it won’t make a difference unless the glazers allow it to.

footballers aren’t any different to anyone else. it’s a job at the end of the day. a pretty rewarding one as things go but their needs at work at the same as anyone else. they want to turn up and be happy in their surroundings, they need to be motivated and driven. if you turn up to your work and there are tiles hanging off the walls, a leaking roof, and corners being cut at every angle, it doesn’t drive you to do better or want better. the governance and culture is fecked and unless that changes, nothing changes.

I wrote both. Just like many other via e-mail. I don't think platform matters that much Mr. vice officer.

I understand raising concerns/even constructive critism. But you trolled him on a social media site then didn't understand why he blocked you, in your words you "did nothing". Then you proudly announce your success on a public forum

Isn't that the same thing as someone messaging Amber Heard to tell her she's a liar and poor actress? Maybe true, but also just a little sad.

As you said, many others also did it. In isolation your message could be shrugged off, but hundreds of similar messages...

The difficulty at this point in time is, how is Richard Arnold going to prove to you or us that he understands points one through ten, as good as they are? It's not as if all he has to do is fire up a PowerPoint and dazzle us with his brilliant schemes. Having a pint down the pub and explaining them is a novelty that is probably only good once. How he's going to have to do it is through action. Once we have enough data, you can make a balanced view on what that data is showing.

After two or three windows, I think you have an idea of the players we target, suitability to roles etc. After one season of the manager in tenure, I think you start to see how the recruitment is being driven, and the feedback for how good it is via the players we sign. Assessing it on the first window may not be reflective of the long term strategy.

After a few seasons you start to have an idea
about contracts, wage structures, and how that impacts squad renewal and sales. You are to some extent saddled with contracts from the previous tenure. Youth academies are by their nature long term, you cannot make a quick assessment on the attitude to that. We have to see the investment in it, how good the next crop are and what importance they're given.

So overall there's not much Richard Arnold can convince me of right now. But football really isn't that complicated. If he signs good players because he's got his appointments right, sells bad ones, got his manager right and improves the club's standing as a result - everyone will be singing his praises. It's that simple. The granular detail of how it's done doesn't matter, there are probably many ways to do it, it's really just whether Arnold has the chops, and probably just as importantly - whether he's given the scope to do it by the owners.

For me fire Murtough and hire some one who has experience in the how to build a first team squad.

clearly this summer has been a disaster, we’ve had manger led recruitment which goes against The whole point of having a DOF, we signed a back up left back whose seems good but was no way a priority or the best use of funds, we missed out on our first choice centre back (timber) and paid £50 million for a our second choice, who has huge question marks over him in terms of his height and going by his debut his ability to keep up the the pace of the premier league.

We spent months chasing a midfielder that there is report after report that he doesn’t want to join us and whose contract situation may end up in court. Our main striker who signed last year and Murtough was DOF when he was brought in wants to leave and there seems to be no way to resolve it as no one wants him

We now seem to be panic buying any one who maybe available and targeting an aging player who is playing in the Chinese league and a player who is on insane wages who can’t get in Juves team and has had a history of reports of attitude problems.

Not to mention we got rid of Murtough first appointment Rangnick, who yeah wasn’t a great manager but everything he said has come true. Not to mention by all accounts the thing he tried to get the players do do most in training was work on there positioning and movement off the ball, (something the players all complained about, possibly because he had an American coach , which shows the discrimination levels in the squad) and somthing that we clearly desperately need to work on going by Brighton

the only bright spot is Eriksen and saying the best thing about our summer when we have spent over 60 mil is a guy who a year ago had a heart attack says it’s all.

Murtough needs to go as this has been a car crash. If Arnold wants to show he wants to get us on the right course, Murtough and the whole recruitment team needs to go.We then need to inploy some on like Rangnick in the role, stop panic buying. Yes it means Ten Hag is gonna struggle this season without players he needs, but it’s far better then just throwing millions away hoping somthing sticks.

Literally come out tomorrow with signings secured. Doesn’t have to be De Jong. But plan b SMS, an attacker (be it that PSV guy or even Antony) and another CM (Rabiot if we must).

Also I wrote him an email so if he responds that would be cool.
