Is he not a very good passer and mainly a dribbling type midfielder? Can only think of that as the reason if he's highly rated for us to not be bothered.

He is a brilliant passer, just watch the highlights of the 3-3 vs Braga you can see that as a quick example.

Of course, but Liverpool know what they are doing. We basically go of Ten Haag‘s recommendations. Our scouting department is on holiday

In that case I don't understand our lack of interest. We desperately need good passers and players who are good in tight spaces to beat the press.

The feeling is mutual ! Have you seen him play before ?
I saw him on television in UCL versus Manchester City leg 2 and when he's linked by Liverpool in this transfers market( especially at the moment) due to midfield injuries, during few weeks, I've gone to study about his game details and watch some Sporting CP full matches and some of his complications on youtube.

Ya he would fit both Liverpool and City, I just wonder which one be ends up at.

Yes so Matheus Nunes played in a second division non league team called Ericeirense whilst working at the bakery. Once his season at Ericeirense finished one of the assistant coaches of the club moved to Estoril Praia and convinced the club to sign Matheus Nunes. During this time Matheus Nunes was working in the bakery and as a cashier in the mornings and then he would bike to trainings in the evenings. After just 12 games in the Estoril U-23 team a Sporting scout informed Sporting about Nunes and then promptly paid Estoril 500K for the boy. Nunes then moved to Lisbon and spent his time developing in the Sporting B team before being called up by Rubem Amorim in the tail end of the 19/20 season. In 20/21 he became a first team regular scoring crucial goals in Sporting’s unexpected league win. The rest is history.
:nono: It’s not history; how nice are his breads and cakes!?

Was so excited when he was linked to Chelsea. For me he just screams peak Moussa Dembele at Spurs (but right footed) - a physically bruising 8 who is an unbelievable carrier of the ball. I also think he's somewhat similar to Kovacic but significantly bigger and stronger (and perhaps not quite on the same level as a passer).

Elite talent. €50m for him is a bargain.

EDIT: seems I'm rather tardy on the Dembele comparison. Think Nunes is better at going past defenders but Dembele was better at holding them off, if that makes sense - still similar types of players.

You need FdJ more than him. Far too similar to Kovacic.

I think we should go all in if we lose out on FdJ

Oh I 100% agree. He'd be a pure luxury purchase for Chelsea at this point, which is why I was skeptical of all the Portuguese media linking him. He still appealed to my idiot lizard brain though!

Sidenote - if the Jorginho to Juve links keep up then the FdJ interest suddenly makes a lot of sense.

Wolves are handed a boost in their pursuit of £51m Sporting Lisbon star Matheus Nunes as Liverpool PULL OUT of the race to sign the 23-year-old, despite their ongoing injury problems in midfield
  • Liverpool have pulled out of the transfer race to sign midfielder Matheus Nunes
  • Klopp's side had been linked with the 23-year-old during the summer window
  • But, the Premier League giants decided not to pursue the Sporting Lisbon star
  • Therefore, the door has been left open for Wolves - who are interested in him
  • However, a switch to Molineux 'doesn't appeal' to Nunes at the moment

I think we are only going by ETH's target list and he may not know enough about Nunes to ask the club to sign him

Nunes declined Wolves earlier in the summer when Sporting were prepared to accept a 45M offer.

I think Wolves are not a player in this game.

He is an attacking midfielder. His attributes are more towards creativity, passing and dribbling and he has good stamina to press.

However he lacks the critical attributes of a CM which is ball retention and tackling. Ball retention for a CM is more about holding up play rather than dribbling with it. He is a no-go for us.

He’s as similar a player to Frenkie as we’re likely to find. Apart from ball-retention I see no reason as to why Frenkie can be a CM and Nunes can’t.

Whatever flaws Nunes might have I’d trust ETH to develop, he already said that if they can’t find the right player they will develop one. He might have been referring to a player already here but I think he’ll struggle to find one.

I don’t really agree with this. He is not an attacking midfielder at all.

When you think of an attacking midfielder you think if someone like Bruno, Ozil, Kaká, etc. guys who are very active in the final third and contribute heavy with goals and assists by getting at the edge of the box or late runs into the box. Nunes does non of that.

Nunes is a straight up box to box CM, no debate. He is very difficult to dispossess and assists defensively with pressing and winning the ball back. If he did not do that then Sporting would struggle heavily in their 2 man midfield.

Nunes wins the ball or gets the ball in Sporting final third and drives the ball forward, helping out at both ends, that’s the definition of a box to box midfielder.

Also if you watch him or even in some of thr videos you can see his ability to hold the ball and retain possession when being pressed to be able to pass it to the open man or switch it out wide with a long ball.

United okay a 4-2–3-1, Nunes would never play in behind the sticker (AKA the attacking mid position) that is not his position.

Yeah he's very clearly an 8. You could stick him in a double pivot in theory but only if there's a true holding midfielder next to him. For me though I still think his best position is in a 3 man midfield where he can command and dictate the entire right side - ideally complemented by either a right winger who stays wide or an overlapping fullback.

Front page of “Record” newspaper stating West Ham has a put in a official bid for Matheus Nunes.

Bid is believed to be 30M +5M in objectives.

Fully expect Sporting to send a fax back to West Ham with “no.” written on it :)

It's our clever Murtough... he waits for a price that is closer to what Sporting wants then he will pounce right in like the agile leopard he is. He is the United Tax killer.

United not being in for him is mental. There's only FDJ who would be a better midfield signing this summer, and United are messing around with SMS and Rabiot (who I actually think could be decent). If FDJ isn't on then Nunes should be first on the list. If they'd just signed him and Palhinha from Sporting and dropped them in that would have made a big improvement, cheap as well.

The easiest way to look at it is to see where his strong attributes lie. Basically a CM needs to have this attributes :
  • Tackling/Interceptions
  • Holding up play (ball retention which is useful for resisting the press)
  • Passing (they don't need to be as good as an AM in terms of passing accuracy but good enough to find players who are available)
  • Stamina
  • Off the ball movement (need to study opponent's movement to position themselves into defending or attacking)
  • Shooting
  • Dribbling (Not a very significant attribute for a CM, but useful in formations where an AM is not present)
Good examples of a CM are Michael Carrick, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Edgar Davids and Luka Modric. Nunes seems to be very strong in dribbling, passing and shooting, average at ball retention (he has a tendency to take heavy touches) and his tackling/interception normally happens when he loses possession of the ball. If you observe him closely, his first intention is always to dribble when he has the ball, as opposed to a CM who tends to hold up the ball and then release it to players who have picked up spaces. CMs only dribble when players are not in spaces while Nunes tends to do that most of the time.

Bruno, Nunes predecessor, displayed similar attributes when he was at Sporting but you can see that he is more of a attacking midfielder in terms of his strong attributes, which is his capability to dribble, pass, get into attacking positions and shoot. Fred is another attacking midfielder who tended to go deep or box to box during his time at Shaktar Donetsk. But if you observe Fred closely, his real strength is in terms of passing and dribbling. Due to his good stamina, willingness to track back and aggression, managers tend to play him in central or defensive midfield since they had no other options.

I feel your classing Center Mids all in one box.

Modric, Xavi, Iniesta, Pirlo are all very different center mids then seedorf, Gullit, essien, yaya toure, ballack, renato sanches etc.

The point being is not every center mid is the same.

I still can’t believe United slept on Palhinha. Can’t remember the last time they had a CDM with his attributes.
