Say we sign Rabiot and Milinkovic. We'll have Bruno, Eriksen, Milinkovic, Van de Beek, Fred, Rabiot, Mctominay, Garner. As senior midfielders.
I'll bin off at least two of Mctominay, Garner and Van de Beek.

One game??? Mate, have you been watching United for the last couple of years?? Bar one or two games, he has never ever given any indication he´s good enough to be a United starter. I used to think he could be a good squad option but honestly, I just don´t see any proof of that.

Amazing how much one performance has escalated the enmity.
Are you joking? Every United fan from every corner of the planet hates the McTominay Fred combination and the primary person to blame in that unholy relationship is McTominay. He is the perfect representation of how far we've fallen as a club. An academy player who give his all but just isn't enough. Same mould as the Pogba's and Lingard's before him. At least, with those we won something. This lad will be the death of this team.

Can’t fault McTominay for his work rate, but realistically feel he’s had a good run out in the first team and hasn’t improved.

Thing is with McFred as most have said they should not be a pairing, either with someone else. The fact this has been allowed to happen for a long time is mismanagement.

He wouldn't look out of place in the Burnley midfield.

Shame Sean Dyche isn't around anymore as he'd have snapped him up.

We wouldn't accept any bid. For some reason the club think he's an appropriate first team regular for Manchester United.

It is weird isn't it? why do we treat our homegrown players as untouchable superstars from the first minute.

I know the club loves the youth element and wants an academy player in every squad, but he's just so bang average.

He must train like a demon or something as all the managers seem to like him. I was certain he wouldn't make ETH's first team :nervous:

Considering how out of touch the Club are with supporter's opinions, and how they always fail 'to read the room' I do seriously wonder if they think of McT as an untouchable because the fans love him as he has come through the ranks
so they dare not face up to how shite he really is.

Even McLaren was spouting a couple of months ago, what a great player McTominay is, how he always delivers and how important he is to the team.
What the heck was that based on?
Was McLaren just trying to appease supporters by praising what the club consider to be the fan's favourite player...?!?
I really don't know, its a WTF from me.

He's 25 now and needs to be much better. I don't think we can continue with him as a starter and hope ETH sees the same. Training and preseason can be really flattering so for me it all starts now and ETH wasn't slow to react in the game and bring back Eriksen as we need someone that resembles a footballer. Other opposition he might be ok.

I think he's liked because he has the attributes and the correct attitude, he can strike a ball well and has shown in the past to be good at tackling. McTom did improve us when he came back from injury under Ole's first full season before Bruno joined. Problem is the standards are much higher, it's always fleeting moments and everything else is so poor and clumsy. Maybe he can improve with ETH over a season or two to become a decent squad player but we need to sign someone now. I doubt he'll ever show the passing technique or game intelligence required.

I thought his first half performance way okay - not exceptional, but not awful. It took me by surprise how often he was taking up positions normally occupied by strikers.

One game, I don't know why
I hided behind teammates and didn't even try
Keep that in mind, Erik designed this side
To score goals by halftime
And all I know
Time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as Caicedo swings
Lose my standing at the end of the day
As I'm forbidden to play
It's so unfair

Think most people were surprised when he got brought into the squad by Jose. He has been a very lucky lad.
There were plenty of players like him in the youth ranks when Ferguson was manager. Players who would have got a few games in the league cup and then moved onto a Championship or League One team where they work their way to a respectable career. Most of his appearances came after Mourinho admittedly but I think it is quite telling that in a rare occasion that he gave a few chances to an academy player it was to someone who had just gone through a massive growth spurt and was not among the best players in the academy.

Definitely think it was because he was tall. Like LvG promoting players who mainly disappeared. Only player who came up and had a vaguely decent career is Paddy McNair.

Ferguson used to have a fascination for a while of having a few games a season when he played a defender in CM. Sometimes it was out of necessity like Phil Neville doing a job on Patrick Vieria (successfully) or when Phil Jones in his younger years was used to be a yard dog. Other times like when Rio Ferdinand was pushed up because in theory since he was good on the ball for a CB it was assumed you could push him up and make it work. But it never did. The reason is as good as Ferdinand was on the ball for a CB the fact remained he was a CB for a reason. If he was turned by a forward as a defender it was because he would have made a mistake in his positioning. When you're in the midfield at the highest level positioning obviously matters but you also need situational awareness of constantly moving and turning in split seconds. You can't be a headless chicken rampaging at people for no reason but you also can't drop off a few yards and not get involved in the build up either. It's the most demanding role on the pitch for a reason.

What relevance does this have to McTominay? Well he plays CB for Scotland. By all accounts he does a solid job for them in that position. But the fact he is not in the midfield means they don't believe what he would help them keep possession better in the middle of the park compared to other options but he is a better option at the back than what they have. And his best games for United typically have been when he hasn't had to use the ball much but be a yard dog. That is fine out of necessity as mentioned above but it cannot be every game.

finding it harder and harder to not actively hate mctominay. I get it isn't his fault that somehow he keeps getting selected while CLEARLY not being up to standard, but man just getting so fecking old.

McTominay wouldn't even make the bench for Yeovil Town FC.

Not United quality even on his best days.

I have studied Scott McTominay's performance against Brighton with respect to the complaint that he hides from the ball.
  • I looked at every instance the first line (centre backs and the goalkeeper) were trying to build play from the back.
  • I found that McTominay regularly showed for the ball (particularly in the first half) and collected the ball a number of times from the first line.
  • I did not find any examples that match the video that was relayed by @Sunny Jim showing Scott McTominay hiding from the ball.
I will continue to keep an open mind and an eye on future games to see if I can build a case that Scott McTominay hides from the ball. I have recorded the moments to video, but lack the status to be able to post it yet.

How did that go for Levitt and his team?
D U are obviously no match for AZ who are one of the top 5 teams in Holland. But It underlines my point that even in a losing team Levitt looked 10 times the player Mac is.

Like to think this is an end to this 4 year prank now. I think he’ll be gone by September too.
