Why don't we do loan deals more often ?

We are entering the final weeks with not getting some targets done in the market and this window is starting to get a little bit underwhelming rather than one of a rebuild summer that we all expected. My genuine question is why do we suddenly rush into panic buys and offer transfer deals instead of loans or loans with buy option deals and then in the future monitor our primary targets' situation and/or how players loaned in are doing.

A long and exhausting saga about FDJ could end up with him staying at Barca and we are totally priced out of a move for Anthony. And also, we are having issues with striker and are looking for a backup who can provide us a physical presence and is good at holding up the ball so we can bypass press and beat lines that way. I see other teams last two summers getting very good players on that kind of deal and, as I can remember, our last two loans were Ighalo and Falcao.

This summer: Ekitike to PSG, Wijnaldum to Roma, Lukaku to Inter, Lenglet to Tottenham.
Last summer: Romero to Tottenham, Locatelli to Juventus, Demiral to Atalanta.

It is much less risky than throwing a deal in front of a player who we are not sure if fits and then risking him becoming deadwood sooner than later. And also can help you sign more players and solve more issues within the budget.

One of the players that come to my mind when I'm talking about loan options in our most urgent positions to fill is Callum Hudson Odoi. It would not be a surprise if we go into a season with Sancho as our first choice RW option, but we should have at least someone as a reliable backup. Recent news about CHO is that he will seek a move to gain more minutes and I think we can offer him much more game time than he would get in Chelsea. He has some traits in terms of creativity and ball progression from a wing that ETH likes and I think he would be a decent backup for Sancho. Offer them a loan with the option to buy and if he fails to impress your primary target may become available in time.

What are your thoughts about this ? Is it the thing with other clubs knowing we are desperate and have money to spend or is it some kind of deals that are easier to do in other leagues ? Cheers.

A lot of those aren't really loans - they're loans with obligations to buy. They're loans purely for accounting reasons

But yeah, the loan market we haven't made the most of.

We seem to only do it for strikers - Ighalo, Falcao, Tevez, Larsson. I'm not certain why. I will say loans to big teams are extremely rare, so it's not a shock that we haven't done many. I imagine most smaller clubs know they can force the hand of the bigger clubs by saying "Nope, buy or GTFO" because they don't want to miss out on the chance at cashing in while the interest is there - they may not want the risk that the player ends up not performing well during their loan and thus the sale doesn't go through (which when you think about it, makes sense because a large percentage of players don't perform incredibly on their first season).

EDIT: Now that I think about it, Tevez may be a great example of why we don't like to loan players. If they do very well, suddenly other rich clubs are competing with us for their signature.

Not sure your example makes a massive amount of sense. Hudson-Odoi won't get much football so we should loan him so he can be a backup and play not much football? Not sure that works for us or Chelsea, he's not of the quality for us to want an obligation to buy and it wouldn't be putting him in the shop window. He might get a bit more football, but is he really any more appealing for us to use than blooding Amad, Garnacho etc? Nope.

It's probably a market we could do better in. I'm not a great fan of them being used liberally because they do trend towards short term plaster like fixes and I think for Man Utd the priority should always be somebody we can develop. Not that we've been great at it, but in an ideal world.

Maybe CHO is not the greatest example but we don't have many options now and I think that with us playing Europa League not the Champions League and having Rashford who is in desperate need to find his best and Sancho as our only wingers, bar youngsters, he would get more minutes than Chelsea can offer him.

As long as I can accept it is not a good example, my general point is that we should explore the loan market much more than we do, given our situation with squad and budget to spend. Players like Romero, Ekitike or Locatelli were certainly not players at their end of careers seeking for money or players that selling could not cash immediately.

A year loan with the option to buy should be employed more regularly, it would give club and player ample time to see if they're a good fit for each other, without getting tied in to silly length contracts. They should come with the understanding that the receiving club has priority over any other club to buy first.

I think we need to take the plunge in the loan market this year.

There are some players we could certainly use. Doubt Chelsea would allow us to take CHO but there are bound to be options elsewhere.

Clubs with big squads like PSG, Madrid, Barca and us previously always have talent available. Due to finances players like Saul Niguez were available last year though that was a failed loan.

At this stage Id even try and take someone like Herrera back. Squad player for PSG last year but they are bringing in a couple of new midfielders for their new season. There are bound to be other options

Players like Isco (think he moved?), Asensio, Cellabos, Herrera, Gueye, Draxler could all help with our RW, CM areas with low cost, low risk solutions

it depends on Ten Hag.... can he get something out of Diallo, Pellestri, Garner, Iqbal, Garnacho? if they are good enough they are ready.

Straight up loans are definitely under-utilised in the PL — it feels a very European club thing to do. Whack in an “option to buy” and you’ve got a player for a year at the very least. It also lets you try out certain players and profiles you think might work on paper but have some issues surrounding them.

Most recent PL team to utilise a straight loan that really worked was probably Arsenal with Odegaard

Big teams rarely do loans, I find that’s more for mid table - lower table teams. Doesn’t happen that often (yes I know we have done a few over the last couple seasons but it’s not a common affair)

We should do it with FDJ. Pay his wages for a year, get him off the books at Barca, solve our midfield issues this year and he still has the option to return. Short term fix but gives us a year to get in real quality and hopefully qualify for CL.

Would be much smarter than overpaying for mediocre players - sure.

If your long-term goal is to challenge for the biggest prizes but you realize that this is very unlikely here and now, you can - yes - bring in short-term targets simply in order to have a better chance of remaining there or there abouts (top four). And those short-term targets could very well be players on loan - sure, yes: it's obviously better than overpaying for mediocre players on permanent contracts.

You need someone in charge (of recruitment) who knows what the feck he's doing, though. Someone who has both the long-term and the short-term in mind. A proper DOF, in other words.

Nobody wants to loan players to us. They want cash, because they know we have so much money that we blow it on mediocre players.

Considering the mess barca are I don't see why we don't try it with them for de jong for a season, Barca get his wage soff the books for a season, de Jong does not have to worry that he will have to permanently leave barca whilst also keeping his wages and then see what happens at the end of the season with all parties

Yeah IF that was a remote possibility then definitely would have heard about it already

I’m not sure but I think Leroy Sane would certainly have been a great loan option if he’s not a first teamer at bayern. He’d walk into our side even if it’s for a year while we try to rebuild. Possibly with the option of buying if he wants to return to Manchester.

Don't think he was ever open to a return to Manchester

Suspect we will do a bunch of loans in the last week of the window when we realise we can't sell players and end up paying most of their wages to play somewhere else

Ig guess 5 out of
Awb
Williams
Jones
Bailey
Tzanube
Van de beek
Pellestri
Diallo

Bump.
I genuinely think we need to be targeting PSG
Keylor Navas, Herrera, Draxler, hell, even Icardi would probably improve us
We need bodies to phase out the traumatized first teamers

The answer to the OP is simple. Cuz we are incompetent. Loan deals obvious take some planning to get the player in, which we obviously suck at. To get the player out, they just are incompetent.

Would Chelsea entertain the idea of loaning us Hudson-Odoi? I'd take him, can't be any lazier than our current wingers

Herrera coming back from PSG on a seasons loan would be a good option seeing as he’s better than both McTominay and Fred and plays the same role but yes in general it always baffles me that we never look at loan deals, was Falcao the last one we did ?

Even trying loan with obligation to buy works for me if it’s a player that improves us but we don’t want to go over budget that summer, paying Ajax something like £15 million to loan Antony then another £50 million the following summer so Ajax got the fee they want albeit a year later.
