No need to argue with me mate, the manager picks him and plays him more than the rest too. That just confirms my views. He will play more minutes than Sancho and Martial this season it looks like. And Rashford will get better with time and confidence
what are you basing this on?
He has been shit for a long time now with no signs of him recovering the form he once had.
It is a sad state of affairs as I thought he would be an elite player at this stage in his career

The moment when Ronaldo put a ball in across the box and Rashford wasn't even in sight, and instead it was Eriksen trying to get onto the end of it sums him up as a forward for me.

He has no idea where to be on the pitch, he could pick up so many easy goals but is never in the right position.

Fans can talk about how physically he regressed because of injuries but he lacks in other areas that have nothing to do with fitness.
Surely that's a tiredness issue? He was behind the play and couldn't make it to the box. I think he was tired by that point and needed to be subbed. It was around 84 minutes and Rashford was subbed at 87.

I'm positive he makes that sprint if it's earlier on in the game. He already made a sprint a little bit before that passage of play happened. He passed to Ronaldo and made a run in behind. Ronaldo stopped and passed back to Malacia.

 Evidence says the exact opposite. Shite and only getting worse and looking more forlorn.
I disagree. He is showing a lot more now than last season. Last season he was very ego and didnt sprint as much. Much better now.

He has been as shit as Sancho and Elanga, but he is doing more correct thing than them. Against Leicester Sancho had huge space on his side, since Maddison drifts in centrally, but he stayed way to high and was difficult to find. Neither of the 3 has been brilliant, but Rashford seems to fit the style of ETH more and generally plays better than them in the matches.

Only if your measure is that one sprint in a game is better than zero.

You're living in some alternate reality if you think Rashford has worked, not hard, but at all, in the last two games.

It's never been a problem with ego. It's just chronic laziness, no football intelligence and very limited technical ability.
Do you really think ETH would allow a striker upfront from start, who didnt run? At all? You're not giving the manager any credit here.

With all that work rate there has to be an output at the end of it. Apart from the assist there weren’t many tangible contributions from Rashford

Hard to see him ever having the quality needed from a starter. He's such a basic footballer. The question is whether we can have such a highly paid backup.

He's not very good with his back to goal. There was a game against Arsenal at Old Trafford 1 or 2 seasons ago where he and Greenwood started up front and neither of them could hold the ball up.

That said, I thought he played just about ok against Leicester and it was a tidy assist. Probably better for Martial to start up front once he is back from injury and Rashford playing on the left wing

I guess me and the manager sees the same things. He has been better than Sancho and Elanga for all of the games so far and thats why he gets to play more than them... None of the 3 has been brilliant, far from it, but Rashford has been best of a mediocre bunch
"Will be a key figure so get used to it", "is playing so must be playing well". These never age well. Most recent being Maguire. Rash was also getting a lot of favour when Rangnick first came. These managers aren't Ole who don't give detailed instructions, if Rashford is messing up ETH's control philosophy he will lose his place quick. I actually hope the people around Rashford aren't telling him these performances are good enough to continue getting minutes because it will come as a shocker when it turns out the manager is looking at way more than goal contributions. Repeatedly losing possession so cheaply is a massive sin to these types.

The Antony transfer already assures one of our attackers' time as a weekly starter might be coming to an end. Meanwhile Rash continues to create a string of performances like he's desperate to be the one.

I thought he was decent against Leicester. Certainly not a performance that you bash him for, nice assist for Sancho.

Had trouble keeping the ball and was a bit erratic in the second half but he had less space to run into. Rashford thrives when he has lots of space to run into, which is why I think he needs to work on his awareness and positioning. I reckon he might be a terrible driver.

Had a decent first half I thought, keeping in mind that he is just at the moment filling in that CF role. While he is not great with his back to goal, ref gave him nothing at all, Evans was freely fouling him. Trying to keep an objective eye, one thing I noticed was he was showing a lot more for the ball rather than just sticking by the CBs or looking to just have run in behind. To me, that was a good sign in that he took on the instruction from the 2nd half of Soton game where ETH said Rashford needed to do a bit more of that and brough it into this game.

He is not going to turn into a monster CF but, as long as he can fill in and continue to be coached to do some of the things a CF should do better, then a decent 3rd option.

Martial will be the main CF if he stays fit and Ronaldo now with the window closed and a bit more fitness having missed pre-season will probably start games ahead of him soon enough.

Once he gets back to playing the wide forward role, think ETH will help improve him especially on the decision making in that he'll actually get coached versus what seems to have been go out there and do your thing approach.

Looking forward to him on the bench when we have options. Give it 2 weeks and he's a sub

When was the last time he showed that then? Except on tour, when it didn't matter.
I'm not defending Martial - I am answering the question "why do people still call for him to play over Rashford?" and my answer is because he has more natural talent.

Even in his little cameo against Liverpool you can see he's just a far better player than Rashford. There was one moment the ball came into Martial's feet with VVD closing behind him and he expertly "bounced and rolled" VVD to start a counter-attack. It was just so classy.

The problem is, as you allude, he doesnt string good performances together and his work rate is non-existant

Basically, this Rashford vs Martial debate is like the DDG vs Henderson debate...the answer is "why are they still here?"

The amount of times he just went straight into Evans or took a shot against his shins was infuriating. What the hell is he thinking.

Has no hold up play up front and never a CF, should play as a LW, as @pocco said what might happen is when Antony will start games Rashford will be a LW and Antony a RW.

Liverpool. Literally a week ago
He had 45 minutes where he was fine. It said everything about him that his fans will use him not being terrible as proof that he deserves another shot. The fact is that he's looked lazy, unbothered and all round awful for the last few seasons. Then he gets injured.
Martial unlike Rashford can actually play football. His issue the last 2 years have been injuries. Martial can actually link up play, make better decisions and hold up the ball, he is miles away from Rashford as a striker.
Ah yes, the intangible 'he can actually play football'. He's living off a decent season and a half where he showed that he could dribble and find the net. He has gone backwards so far since then that he's basically unrecognizable. There's a reason Rashford had played more than him the last few years and it isn't just to do with injuries. But you probably know better then the coaches that see them day in, day out i guess...
Last week…That second goal against Liverpool doesnt happen if its Rashford that has to set it up. Van Dijk would have simply pushed him off the ball.
Again, see above. He was ok for 45 minutes and the fact that this is enough for some to see he deserves another chance shows how far standards have fallen. That performance, pretty unexceptional, mind, was still the exception as opposed to the rule when you take the last few seasons into account.

How is a player who plays crap but scores a goal any different to a player that played the same or even marginally better and made the assist?

Thought first half he was pretty good although he didn’t get much change out of the ref. Normally I would’ve said he needs to be a bit stronger, but Pawson was giving free kicks for breathing on Leicester players.
Second half was pretty poor but there is no way he was ‘lazy’. I can’t see how you can watch that and think he was putting in no effort unless you have an agenda to be honest.

Out of Ronaldo, Martial, Sancho and Antony, he should be last in the pecking order.

He's just not adding enough to games and doesn't seem to possess the threat he used to. Maybe that can change, but for now, he should have slipped in the pecking order by quite a bit.

Hopefully that galvanises him into some greater form, but at the moment, he's much better than previous, but it's really still not good enough.

The number of people touting Martial above Rashford (and I am no Rashford lover) is legitimately staggering. Yes, he used to do some pretty dribbles but he's been terrible, and when he's not been terrible he's been injured, for the last three(?) or four(?) seasons.
For me it's simple, for LW position Rashford should be above Martial in the order. For CF position, Rashford shouldn't be an option at all and Martial is easily better CF.

You want Ronaldo? Martial can do both the physical side and the hold up play hes obviously ETH's guy, just can't stay fit.
Martial can't do very much at all. I'd much rather have Ronaldo.

The elephant in the room is the fact 'I thought he was decent' when talking about Rashford actual means 'I didn't think he was a total fecking disaster'

The expectations and standards for this lad are so low that if he decided to just slowly jog up and down the touchline for 90 minutes we would come here and see the 'kilometres covered' stat presented with the opinion: "played well, covered a lot of ground. Confident he's going to kick on"

Rashford cannot have a poor game. The scale is different for him.

Doesn't shit the bed = "He was excellent today, getting back to his best"

Played poorly = "I thought he was decent"

fecking horrendous = "I thought Sancho was shit. Why aren't we talking about this instead?"

He was walking around at times in the second half.

When everyone was doing it you could say well obviously this is something deeper than any individual, but now we're improving and the players are working harder and running more while some of the time Rashford still isn't.

Agree he was tired. He's played 86+ minutes in every game, and he makes a lot of sprints in behind which must take it out of him. But I agree with the other poster too - his decision making let's him down especially as a 9 - some of his runs are a waste of energy as they're runs into a dead end, or very low percentage of success. He doesn't know when to drop deep, come short for a quick one two, when to recycle the ball or spread it wide, and doesn't sense goalscoring opportunities in the box. On form he's a good, explosive, direct option for LW, but his minutes should be managed to both maintain his stamina levels, and also tactically we don't always need what he offers. Martial and Ronaldo are better 9s when fit, Rashford should be alternating with Sancho and Antony for two of the other three wide forward positions.

He was terrible today (Yet again). I lost count of the amount of really good attacking moves that broke down when they got to him.

Doesn't have the touch or footballing brain for the very top level. He has pace and I like him in games where we have to counter more (Like the Liverpool game) but in game where we are expected to control the tempo, he just isn't up the standard and never will be.

He's where our attacks go to die. But that's fine because he's simultaneously playing well and getting back to his best but still struggling with injury and that's why shouldn't be so mean to him for being shit.

Quite a feat when you think about it

Speaking of coaches, Ten Hag seems to fancy him, so perhaps you should follow your own advice on this one.

My thoughts exactly.

I'm genuinely perplexed how people thought he had a decent game or worked hard. He barely pressed and just meandered around for most of the game.

He made a couple of decent moves but if that's the benchmark for decent then we're fecked. He killed almost every attack.

He's played 45 minutes so far this season and we've apparently been looking to buy a centre forward, so I'd calm down on claims like this.

MBE & Dr Marcus Rashford played in a position where he is not good at he isn't a center forward, can't hold up play and fails to make cleaver runs in behind defenders and rarely if at all challenged for long balls from the GK and defenders. He should be moved to left wing, and we need a striker, Ronaldo is too old and Martial is injured, what other option have we got?.

I like it when he jumps for headers from a goal kick - that he has no intention of winning, he actually moves himself out of the way so the opposing defender doesn't hurt him - but hey - it looks like he's trying right?

Once of those annoying things I noticed early last night and kept and eye on - if you watch it back, he strategically misses every header from a De Gea goal kick by 2-3 yards.

Done this his entire career - fantastic trait that

Someone should make a compilation like mct had of him evading the ball from being passed to him.

Nah. Seen enough. Needs to be replaced asap. Hopefully with Antony incoming, we won't see Marcus starting so regularly. Whatever our feelings towards Ronaldo, the step up in quality when he came on showed all we need to know.

He's always been bad in the air, I can't remember many goals he's scored via headers.

I didn't think he was particularly lazy last night, he tired noticeably as the game went on but it certainly wasn't as bad as last season where he would be walking around from the second he got on the pitch.

I just thought his general play was terrible, his passing, his decision making, his hold up play, his touch etc. All so poor.

here's a quick screenshot I took - someone with more time might be able to do a comp.

Look where he jumps to contest vs where the ball is actually landing - he's miles away! This is 100% intentional to avoid contact, but look like he's trying.

Noticed that too. He did win a header on the left wing in the 2nd half.

Very annoying that De Gea kept targeting Elanga with kicks. Sancho is clearly the better option
