Is it time we look at alternatives to refs?

If we can consider abolishing the police then surely abolishing refs will be much easier

What are the alternatives to refs?

A panel of experts?
Robots?
The players ref themselves?

I think it is already underway with the introduction of the automated offside check system in the CL this week.
probably be some time before we see ‘galactic football’ type referees.

Someone off the street would’ve reffed that better because maybe they’d have more chance of actually knowing the rules.

Unexplainable calls like the penalty being awarded earlier needs to have consequences for the referees.

Fan vote on VAR is the only fair way. We even have red and yellow buttons on remotes.

I'm all on favour for robots that self destruct if they get a decision wrong.
Maybe we have some gladiatorial system in play where King Charles can give the thumbs up or down for refereeing decisions to decide whether the ref lives or dies?

Where do they get their ref's license from? A Christmas cracker?

About time they started playing second fiddle to the monitor. The ref on VAR should be the main guy and expected to get every single decision right because that's their job and they have every single angle available and time on their side, referee on the pitch should just be there as a physical presence and to keep the game ticking.

The idea of VAR being there to only assist the referee and not ref games is a farce, you have the tool to get it right 100% of the time, why hold it back just to make your mate look like even more of a blind idiot?

I can't understand why they go up all these blind alleys every time they try to implement changes to the refereeing.

Accountability does need to be introduced in situations where the referee who made the final decision for it completely wrong. Not 60/40 wrong and you could understand the confusion but 100% wrong even with VAR.

No but a retrospective punishment should be a thing for them too. They keep getting away with horrendous decisions and hold zero accountability.

Upgrade VAR and start using multiple drones.

Replace referees with ring girls to maintain a physical presence on the pitch. They can hold the substituion boards and pop new batteries in the drones when they drop.

The only thing that can replace them is VAR but VAR is controlled by an unknown organization to increase the odds of them winning bets.

They should massively increase referees wages and make it a full time position. None of this being a teacher or police officer during the week and the ref at the weekend.

Then have a big outreach program to footballers in the lower tiers who never earnt fortunes. I’m sure they would be really keen on a job refereeing top level football for £250k a year.

The competition would drive up standards.
