He's been a great servant to the club (if we're being kind) and has been one of our best performers in the post Sir Alex era, but David's time is coming to an end, with this most likely being his last season. I can't wait for a ball playing keeper who is comfortable in possession under pressure and can spray a pass out wide or up top if need be.

Question is, who is out there that can play this role? I haven't seen us strongly linked with anyone? And its clear whoever it is needs to be at a level similar to Ederson and Allison if we're to stand any chance of challenging for top honours any time soon. Is there any wonderkids i haven't heard of? Has any of the caf scouts done a report on anyone? I read that Meslier is being watched by the club, but he looks far and away from any sort of finished product that would be required in my opinion and even then i wouldn't really know if he is that type of goalkeeper?

Sanchez definitely makes a lot of sense given that their team and club has been dismantled somewhat.

I reckon the club will go for Meslier. Luckhurst mentioned over the summer he's our earmarked successor to DDG.

I don’t know much about him except they shipped loads of goals last season and usually looks poor against us.

I'm sure this thread can probably be merged with others but anyway:

  • Maignan - Probably the top option, arguably a top 8 GK in the world and still pretty young. Likely to be expensive though.
  • Sanchez - Will probably cost a fair whack as well as Brighton don't sell cheap but very well-rounded and perfect for the role in Ten Hag's system.
  • Raya - Another good option as he's currently out of contract in 2024 so might be available on the cheaper side in the summer.
  • Diogo Costa - Not currently as experienced as others on this list but very good potential.

Meslier would be a poor choice IMO. I think the potential's there but he seems to make a fair few mistakes and I think the pressure of the United #1 shirt would get to him. Also surely Leeds won't want to sell to yous.

Is the Southampton ex City GK capable of playing Ten Hag’s way?

The problem with going for Raya or other current PL keepers is that PL clubs are much wealthier and have the financial leverage to demand much higher transfer fees. Buy one from an Austrian or mid-lower table German, Italian or Spanish clubs and they'll be a cheaper. This is the sort of option I'd go for, especially if we don't have another £250 million transfer budget again next summer. We still need to get a proper midfield playmaker and centre forward, neither of which will be cheap, and depth for a few other positions, so if we can spend £10-15 million to get a decent keeper who can distribute the ball so we can play out from the back and sweep up behind the back line so we can play higher up the pitch I think that's better than pushing all the chips in trying to find another Ederson or Allison and having to settle on a weaker midfield and/or centre forward for another season.

Raya would be entering the final year of his contract next summer, assuming he doesn't extend

Anyone good, young and cheaper from a foreign league please. Don't want to be talking about 300k contracts and all.

Generally, yes. But in Raya's case Brentford will be looking to sell if he hasn't signed a new contract by next summer as he'll only have one year left on his existing deal. That may bring the price into a more viable range.

It was very frustrating watching him dink the ball over our press to his fullbacks, would be nice to watch him do that in a set of United keeper pyjamas.
Ramsdale did that shit 10 times against us for the Arse the other week. Made De Gea look Sunday League.

Think this is a case of be careful what you wish for.
Agree, DeGea may not be great with his feet and has made some errrors already this seasosn, but none of the keepers being mentioned give me confidence as a United number one....just because they are godo with there feet doesnt make them good keepers, I mean taking away that I would say none are better than Henderson.

Personally interested to see how Vandevoordt does over the next 3.4 years. Only seen him a couple of time but he looked so commanding of his area, strong presence, safe hands, gretat at closing angles and good with his feet and throwing the ball out.

He has already signed for Leipzig durign the summer....to go there in 2024 which is an odd move, I still feel he woul dhave been a good back up option to learn his trade here.

But DeGeas contract is still the only defining reason to sell him for me. Still a very good keeper and certainly better than names I am seeing mentioned, as you say, careful what you wish for....People forget before DeGea and Van de Sar we had a few very good keepers in Foster, Barthez and Bosnich and none of them were very good here at all

"Not great with his feet" is an understatement. He is bad enough with his feet that it precludes us from playing out from the back unless the opponent does not press with a single forward. Otherwise he kicks the ball long and we lose possession on half of those kicks.

Simply having a keeper who can kick the ball over pressing forwards to slightly advanced fullbacks means that opponents are forced to commit all of their players further up the pitch, otherwise they are exposed to long kicks. As it stands now opponents can just press us with a few forwards and clog the midfield as well, which means less possession for us.

Give Saints a big offer for Bazunu.
couldnt agree more, the futures incredibly bright for ireland in the goalkeeping area, between him (20), kelleher and travers (both 23)
and yet he won his place over them despite been 3 years younger and been immense ever since

kids excellent with the ball at his feet too, massive prospect

If we plan it well, which I don't think we will, we can get Raya or Sanchez for a RELATIVELY small fee. Especially Raya as his contract is up soon. But we will probably stand there in September and pay too much for Meslier.

Said it in another thread I reckon it'll be Meslier too especially if we do indeed trigger De Gea's extra year and we're stuck with him till 2024
Laurie Whitwell and David McDonnell also mentioned Meslier as the earmarked long term De Gea replacement

If it was up to me I'd choose Maignan, Diogo Costa or Robert Sanchez over any other option. Bazanu looks decent too
Willing to bet my life's savings it'll be Meslier though

Yeah he will be my pick as well for a cheaper option. I like Nübel as well but have to see if he wants to wait for his turn at Bayern
I believe Nubels agent said if Bayern extend Neuers contract than Nubel would be looking for an exit. He is a very good keeper and he has some good size to him too. Only thing is he is quite inexperienced for a 25 year old. I think he has about 80 professional games under his belt only, however that’s happened with other keepers, Emiliano Martinez was the same when he was backup at Arsenal until he got regular football.

Nubel or Lafont would be exciting options, cheaper than buying from a PL club too.

So even if we ignore the fact he's absymal with the ball at his feet, particularly under any kind of pressure, then the fact that he's literally the worst goalkeeper in the league at leaving his line for both crosses and to sweep behind defenders isn't a good enough reason given Ten Hag wants us to play a high line then? What about the fact we had to abandon how Ten Hag wanted to play after two games because De Gea cost us 5 goals in those two games? Or the fact that his one supposedly redeeming quality is his shot stopping, which other than a 4 month purple patch between August & December of 2021, has also been below par for over 4 years?

We shouldn't get rid because of his contract, we should get rid because he's fecking dreadful.

Bazunu all day long for me. Has the personality and balls for it, excellent with his feet and distribution, strong on crosses and sweeps proactively behind a high line. Plus he's a decent shot stopper as well.

He could be our No1 for the next 15 years.
