Todd Boehly: "You could do a North vs South all-star game from the Premier League to fund the pyramid very easily"

Would this even be a commercially worthwhile endeavour? I can't see many being interested in it so how much revenue would it even generate?

Very well saying it raised $200m in the states but don't think theres much appetite for it here.

Increases worldwide and american coverage of the PL and football / why is a cash grab a problem if money from the game would be plunged into the lower pyramid? People moan about dirty money in football all the time but this to me seems to be a relatively lesser problematic way of gaining high revenue for minimum effort. It just seems another reason to jump on the hating americans bandwagon when there are no other decent alternatives by footballing people being put forward to try and help the lower pyramid.
That if is absolutely massive. That’s the point I literally made in the post you quoted, it wouldn’t. It might for a few at the start and then the big boys who’s players get injured in this match will request compensation. Then they will want preemptive compensation for lost training time and the negative effect it has on them, then before you know it all the money goes to the clubs providing the players and only perpetuates the hegemony.

This is exactly how capitalism works, and Boehly and Clearlake aren’t even subtle.

That’s just on this page, on the last page you quoted me when I pointed out to Duffer that this wasn’t the case. There’s loads of people thinking that, and I thought it originally just from the comments in here!

I don’t really disagree with your second point, but I’d need to see what his intentions are. Ending it with “what the pyramid needs” Is quite nebulous, because it could mean PL owners getting more money, or it could be a genuine and sincere effort to get funding to areas where it’s needed.
That is fair. I do think that despite it being morally wrong, we have to be realistic and realise PL owners aren’t going to be giving away their PL tv money or giving money away for “free” essentially to the lower league clubs. I agree that you’d need to see a fully drawn up plan to see if his comments are disingenuous or not but it is a ‘decent’ alternative for me to generate money for them.

Well that depends on how the contract is made up. There could be an insert clause that the lower league clubs are guaranteed x amount of profits. Who knows.

`What next? The Top 8 playing off at the end of the season to decide the PL title? No thanks. This isn't America. Stick to your American sports if you want these type of things

I don't think anyone is saying all of the funding goes to lower leagues or would be ignorant to think that. But if even a fraction of it does, it's helping fund the lower leagues and is more than any other owner seems to be doing to try and help find solutions to do so thus far.

I know that a lot of this will be about thinking of how he can profit too, that’s a given, but do people really think that the PL owners are going to be lining up to give away their share of tv money etc. in the game? Of course not. Is that wrong? Yes. Will it change? Probably not.

This, while still an uneasy alternative to some, is a way of getting maximum profit for minimum effort.
How exactly do you get the maximum profit though? MLB and NBA make money on these events because they are mid season events and fans and players care about them. Where exactly do you hold a mid season game in pl? The managers will go ballistic if you ask them to let their star players gp to play an extra meaning less friendly in december or january. Put it at the end of the season and you have a pro bowl, an event that neither fans nor players care much about and could cancelled even though american football is much more popular than either baseball or nba in america.

Yeah agreed, ideally in these situations it's economically viable/worthwhile while being beneficial for the other clubs. As you said the big owners will need recompense of some kind.

In which case clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal just aren’t going to allow their players in and interest decreases from very low to “oh, is that a thing?”

This is a legitimate concern, for sure. I'd like to see a lot of international friendlies and the Nations League scrapped, personally. International qualifiers could probably be scaled down a fair bit too.
Yeah Nations league is an abomination. Don't think I've watched a single game of it.

You just proposed a contract, very easy to just not sign it.

Or have players with “a niggle”.
True, but I’m sure they’d take an extra bit of money in their pocket without having to do much in terms of organisation, just in the case of releasing players, especially if they don’t have to give away the big pot of tv money. I have a feeling that PL clubs would be fine releasing players to do this one off game if it meant they could pocket an 80% share and the lower pyramid could pocket 20% or something. Still very unfair of course but it is what it is.

and at that point the one positive of this kind of move gets entirely destroyed, the revenue would just as I said go to supporting the current hegemony and those at the top would be pocketing that money and further be able to blow those below out of the water.

It’s just not going to bring any positives at all, except ringfencing those at the top. It’s Operation Big Picture with window dressing.

All-star games are easy to arrange in the states, as the players all have central contracts.

Also when there is no real rivalry between clubs it's 10x easier.

If it's one game it's not much of an issue as it would clearly not be two teams playing at 100%.

If you have it in pre-season when friendlies occur or replace the Community Shield with it there is no issue here for me.
Let’s see what you say when Anthony Gordon breaks his leg playing in a pointless friendly with feck all to do with club or country other than brand awareness amongst some sort of fake north - south rival match

it’s a silly because it serves no purpose other than some new guy liking the sound of his own voice

Yeah I think those of us that watch American sports are less fussed about things like this. The problem is finding the week or so of no games to hold it in if you want it in the middle of the season. If like Silent Witness suggested we have it during pre season that could work better logistically. Personally I'd like to see it too. Imagine we had a free kick completion with jwp, eriksen, Trent, kdb etc. Or a skills/dribbling challenge with Salah,Antony, Sancho, etc Even those complaining would tune in.
Would they? Why, cos you think you've got everyone pegged? You've got American's in here saying they don't give a feck about the All-star setups up they have over there, yet suddenly European football fans will be tuning in to their bastardised iteration for God knows what reason. Hilarious really.

You mean apart from the fact that basically all of us would watch it, just to talk shite about the players from other clubs? ;)

I’d probably feel the same if Gordon broke his leg in any other game. It’s shit luck.

Stupid idea. As an American, I have grown tired of our all-star contests over here. Much hoopla over a drab event. Usually the supporting elements overshadow the actual event, i.e. homerun derby in MLB.

If the EPL is seriously willing to consider some sort of all-star event it would be better served against the Bundesliga, or La Liga, or Serie A. Or have some quartet of leagues compete across a group format. But all this does is further add to fixture congestion and expose players to injury for half-assing in an exhibition.

Oooh Chelsea boys are out to bat for Toddy
I was sceptical about him at first but I finally bent the knee and swore allegiance to our dear leader. I'm now duty bound to leap to his defence to quell any discontent anywhere on the internet.

I think you're missing one very important point.

Who chooses who the best players are....?

Americans have had all star games in all their sports for decades, bit different to the first ever football one. If it happens , we can check how many million people tune in how about that? I could be wrong but I doubt it. It'll be popular as feck.
