Ecuador players about to find themselves millionaires at half-time. Or do you think the Qatari team will be playing for their lives next half? Literally, of course.

After the Asian Cup 2019 I thought Qatar might have very slight chance of qualifying, they looked pretty solid. But now they look awful, like sunday league level awful.

The right back especially looks nothing like a professional player, cannot even control a ball properly

Sunday league standard this from the hosts......... an embarrassing start to an embarrassing tournament. Long may they concede 5 a game.

I haven't watched a minute of their football, Ecuador is no top team and nothing would surprise me anymore with regards to corruption, so while it's indeed not a mind-blowing surprise, I didn't necessarily expect it.
I'm basing my knowledge on a few clips and the fact they didn't seem to have any stadiums to play in in 2010...

I hope they paid less than 10p for that Miguel's citizenship, he's about as bad a professional footballer as I've ever seen.

FFS

That shouldn't even be an option for another 3-4 WCs. Give it to an Asian or African country with some history for 2030 then SA or Europe after that.

I feel like we're watching different clips. The player who challenges for the header has a team mate behind him who's leg is offside (offside only if we assume it was the Ecuador player who got his head on the ball).

It's the team mate who is offside who the ball drops to after the header, he then heads it, initial header then crosses it on the volley.

This is correct but only applies if it did indeed come of an Ecuador head when he challenged the keeper, which is debatable.

It's obviously only offside if the it comes of an Ecuador head when he challenges the keeper.

If it does comes off an Ecuador head, the next player to get a touch on the ball is the Ecuador player who was offside at the time of the header.
Is this similar scenario to CL final this year where Madrid had goal ruled out v pool?

I swear there were people behind the guy who headed it who was called offside, no?
There was 1 defender, but the ‘keeper was ahead, making it offside. Offsides always look strange when the goalie is ahead, but it was definitely off.

I saw Singapore play for 15 minutes not long ago - no idea how Qatar would beat them (of course they might not have to). they weren't great but had way about ball control and more composure than this lot. Bit like watching US "soccer" in the 1980s

Not Qatar level of rubbish but still surprised not one of these lost. Might have expected 1 on average
Not sure how this was done in ancient times, but aren't the hosts also seeded in pot 1? So limiting the number of powerhouses they could get in their group. Then arrange the schedule to have them play the worst team first

Are Qatar the worst team to ever play in the World Cup? I'd fancy 2018 Panama/Saudi to beat them. They are really bad.
El Salvador in 82, I think it was, weren't this bad and lost 10-1 to Hungary!

Ecuador aren't be even that good, solid but nothing more. I can see the Netherlands inflicting the biggest ever world cup defeat on Qatar when they meet, if they feel like it.

Are Ecuador actually good? It's impossible to tell from this game as Qatar are so shit.
I expected them to make the second round and possibly the quarters regardless of who they faced from Group B.

It's unfortunate they got the openener, this would be an awesome third game before the quarters, unless Qatar let the occasion get to them, or walked onto the pitch convinced Ecuador had been "sorted out".
