The amount saying no to Depay are the same guys saying no to Elanga. We must build our squad depth somewhere. We can't go out and buy 10 superstars, there has to be some flexibility. How many here would prefer we blow our whole budget on one player rather than filling the team with useful players while also building an all round unit?
And how much do you think Depay would demand. Would you give him a 150k a week contract? He's so good Barca don't even want him. So why should we be in for him? Have the horror shows of Elanga, McTominay, Fred and co not been enough for you? We should have quality backups for rotation not some average players that wouldn't even make it into the bottom team of the EPL

He’s too slow for an elite team or a team wanting to be an elite team.
Too slow and can't play on the turn. The latter is the reason we looked so poor with Ronaldo in the team, so I don't know why people are so keen for us to have Ronaldo lite.

Yes, please!

Very good with his back to goal. With our wingers running in behind, a player like Depay would compliment our style of play.

The problem for me is I wouldn't say no to a 6 month deal but I don't think a player of this profile is going to agree to that. Do we really want to be lumbered with him given a striker is presumably on the radar for the summer?

Not good in my eyes but if Ten Hag wants him, then I'm ok with it, as I am confident that Ten Hag can make it work.

Looked as average as he has been for most of his career against Ecuador.

People expecting him to hold the ball up or link up well with our other forwards are in for a surprise if we sign him.

Worst sub appearance of all time today. I've seen no stats, but I think 90% of his touches resulted in a loss of possession.

Garnacho has shown more already. Would honestly be more excited about a new contract for the Argentine wonderkid than Depay coming here again. I'd not be too upset if he came on a free though

Depay definitely can’t do it, Gakpo might be able to do it at some point. Why waste the time and money on Depay who will almost certainly have to be moved on in 12 months but we won’t be able to because his salary is too high?
Based on what the guys at the Athletic have been saying we have no budget for Jan. This isn't Gakpo or whoever, sounds like we can only afford a free agent or loan type deal. An Igalo or Depay type of deal is all we can probably get in Jan. So would you rather Igalo/Depay or nothing?

The matches he played in CF at Barcelona were desperate. Horrible.

Available for buttons in the summer and no one willing to take him. Says a lot really.

Never forgiven that header against Stoke either.

If we sign him then I am convinced this will be the final nail in the coffin for our road to being top team again in few years.

Transfers like these are exactly what we DON'T need going forward.

What are his wages?

Will he accept a 12 or 18 month contract?

Depending on the answers above, there is a world where he could make some sense. We also need warm bodies to rotate.

Ronaldo's return didn't work out, Pogba's had good moments but overall it didn't work out. Why would Depay returning work this time?
Because there’s no reason a totally different human being would act similar to two other human beings of zero relation?

Don't forget the Chelsea match where we were 1-0 up in the 91st min and had a counter but this guy instead of time wasting went dribbling, lost the ball and Chelsea then scored on the counter :annoyed:

Abysmal on the left today, but for a low fee and as a Martial sub, I'd be tempted
But as others have said
Would he accept an 18 month deal?

Prefer him over having no one to backup perma-injured Martial, but he found his level in France and never should have left.

It wouldn't be about his behavior. These return of players to their former clubs seldom work out.
But his circumstance is totally different. He was young when he was here and barley registered. Certainly wasn't considered world class on his return like Pogba, or world class at his time with the club and beyond like Ronaldo. The sis a very good player, who was slightly above average when he was here returning. Totally different set of expectations and levels of play. Its just not a comparison that means anything IMHO...

First thing he does after rejoining United is blasting "Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang" while preparing a tweet about the adversity he had overcome and the return of the prince.

If this was a summer addition then I'd say no, we could - and should - do much better.

But I really can't see many of those summer possibles moving in January - or us spending big on another top signing this season.

So of the likely January candidates, I think Memphis is one of the better options. Rare that you'd get someone with his ability and CV available on a possible loan / free just when you need them in January. And, yes, that availability may to some degree be a reflection that he's not in the top tier of options - but we're not really shopping in that tier in January, and it's also just fortunate timing with Barcelona still looking to offload some players to ease their financial situation.

If it's a loan or free then I think it would be a potentially decent addition given the far from ideal situation we find ourselves in.

Loan is a good shout but his contract is up soon so Barcelona won’t allow it
Unless someone wants to buy him or they (Barca) are about to offer him a new contract, then why not? He has only played 150 mins of football since the start of the season, they don’t need him, nor will they be able to make any money off him.

Their only choice is between rotting him on the bench till the summer and wasting more money on his salary, or letting him go 6 months earlier and someone else picks up his salary in the meantime. It’s easy choice for club and player.

If ETH wants him then fine by me. Free transfer for a player at 28 who was top scorer in WC qualifiers with 12 goals. Nobodys first choice but anyone expecting Ivan Toney or Valhovic etc in January is living in cuckoo land.

If any of those that don't want him in Jan can think of a better free or loan signing in Jan then let us know who it is.

We need to sell before we can buy, Maguire Henderson, AWB, DVB, Elanga and Pellistri should all be sold asap, that would fund the striker we need but for now it's going to be a free transfer/loan.

I'd be happy if he came on a free. If we come up against Midtjylland at any point he'll be good for a hatrick.

If he couldn't do it when he was young and shit, what makes you think he could do now that he's experienced and good?

Like everyone else, he had his chance when he was a kid, and that's that.

to be honest i liked what i saw from him when he was here. in a working system he could be good. if he is available for a reaonable sum just take him. but sign a real striker too

He is still lacking sharpness after his injury. I wouldnt read anything into that cameo, his last competitive apperance before the World Cup was in September.

Whilst I'd personally say no thanks, I'm convinced it'll happen.
Probably a freebie as Barca just want rid.
Hopefully he'll be more Hughes and less Ronaldo/Pogba.

I just don't rare him at all, I've seen what his best can be (at Lyon and a little bit at Barca too) for clubs. Not my cup of tea, it's more a gut feeling than anything else. He isn't a "real" striker like the kind we really need to anyway
