He is still lacking sharpness after his injury. I wouldnt read anything into that cameo, his last competitive apperance before the World Cup was in September.
I know, but his weakness is the fact that he isn't a smart enough player to realize he isnt on form and should keep it simple instead of trying backheels and rainbow flicks any other play.

Memphis has plenty of talent, but his decision making and footballing IQ is awful.

Still, I like the guy, he's done some brilliant things for us, he's just so frustrating to watch at times. Yesterday wasnt on him thouhh, everyone was shite.

Free transfers are invariably bad ideas. Serious ego and attitude problem, will want way more than 18 months, will expect a huge pay deal >150k, and a signing in fee. Will be impossible to get rid of when we want a new striker, won’t really want to be here, will not be happy when he is out of the squad.

but yey he is on a free

Very underwhelming, don't know how/why he is regarded a good/decent player. Have no idea how he ended up at Barcelona either.

Every time I've watched him, he just looks bang average.

Don't follow him as a player anymore but I just don't like his character at all. Desperate for attention and to show the world he is someone that he quite clearly isn't. Or maybe he matured a bit?

He is the same player and personality we were not happy with, we absolutely should not go back.

Let us not fool ourselves into thinking the options are Depay or no one. There must be others options.

And how much do you think Depay would demand. Would you give him a 150k a week contract? He's so good Barca don't even want him. So why should we be in for him? Have the horror shows of Elanga, McTominay, Fred and co not been enough for you? We should have quality backups for rotation not some average players that wouldn't even make it into the bottom team of the EPL
We don't know how much he would be demanding, but to say no without even discussing a contract is just nonsense.

I'm sure ETH would know what he's doing and will only go for players he knows are worth the time and money. At the end of the day, it's not just the clubs money, its his money too in a way. He knows he can't over spend here there and everywhere.

If we could get Depay back on a smaller salary cost than what he's on now, we should go for it or at least give him contract bonuses to encourage him to hit such targets to make up for the lower salary contract. But to say no without testing the waters is nonsense. I think Depay would be a great addition as we have seen with Lyon, he was quite good across the front 3 so adds something that we have been lacking at this club, fluid football up top. As far back as mourinhio, we've seemed to have an immobile player up top that couldn't switch up positions as the game went on. Cavani the exception but he was always injured.

What do you mean by that?

We could certainly do worse to get a body through the door, given the extenuating circumstances. He shouldn’t be plan A or B, but I’d take him on loan or a short term contract if Barca ripped his up.

Martial won’t stay fit, Rashford doesn’t need to play through the middle, and the likes of Shoretire, Hugill or McNeill just don’t seem to be ready yet. We absolutely cannot go into the second half of the season without adding another body up front, lest we be stuck with McTominay or Maguire as an auxiliary striker.

Considering the fact we're broke and won't have money for a better striker, I rather have Memphis on a free than no one

Hard pass. Lyon or another mid tier club is his level. Would rather not sign anyone

Would love to see him have a redemption but not sure he’s what we need aside from being able to play 9.

Why are people so resistant to him? We need squad depth in the CF and RW positions. I'd be delighted we can get him on a 6 month loan.
We dont need depth we need someone worthy of being a striker at a top club. A 6 month loan would be fine but it would obviously be better to secure our actual targets now rather than another stop gap.

A top striker might not be possible which is a fair argument but the club has a history of stop gaps so concern seems natural.

So far the returnees are Pogba, which failed, and Ronaldo, which failed. I am pretty sure third time will not be a charm.
Are there any good examples of players who went back to their former club and became a hit? I suppose the Italian league has a lot of players moving around.

Zlatan probably is some sort of success for Milan. His role in the squad and he did decent in his 1st season back.

I'm not quite sure what peoples expectations are here...we are mid season so our options are limited. We have one certified ST and he's slightly above average and a huge injury risk. How can we legitimately compete for top 4 (which is very important for any summer recruitment) with such a thin position?

We need a stop gap player...we aren't going to get anyone exciting in January, but we can get someone helpful. Depay seem to exactly fit that mold IMHO. The only slightly more exciting option that seems realistic is Oshimen, and I still think thats probably not going to happen. I'd love Mbappe or even Felix...but those deals dont happen in January. Would people prefer we just go forward with Martial?

Again, it's a cross section between opportunity, need, and ability. We have the need and ability (in terms of funds)...but we can't just make teams transfer exactly what we need and can afford. Depay is a good option given the circumstances, and I'm shocked so many would pass if it meant an even lesser player or just Martial for the rest of the season...

Yeah IF Napoli had not progressed in the Champions League then would have had a slim chance of signing him

Large proportion of the caf football experts in this thread saying no, which means if he does sign he will be brilliant! See Casemiro and Martinez for just very recent examples of this.

I would only say no if we could get a CF on a loan who offers a different dimension

Watch him score a hattrick against Qatar tomorrow and he'll be resigned.

It has been well established that something is wrong with barcelona in terms of physical training or something. Read that somewhere, the thread was explaining why Dembele was having so many injury issues after he moved to Barca.
Like at Utd then.

Our fan opinion of Depay overtime:

2015 Jun: Golden boy, he's going to win the Ballon d'Or soon.
2016 Jun: He's Obertan in disguise, get rid ASAP
2017 Jan: Great deal by the club. Glad we got rid of him. We're getting effing Sanchez next year yo.
2018-2021: Oh crap, looks like a decent player. We made a mistake. Shouldn't have let Gaal catch him by the bladder!
2021 Jun: Signed for Barca! We're a useless bunch when it comes to developing players. Golden boy, he's going to win the Ballon d'Or soon.
2022 Jun: He's Obertan in disguise, Barca need to get rid ASAP. Do not want him back.
2022 Nov: Great deal by the club. Glad we're getting him. We're also getting effing Osimhen next year yo.

i have another theory ....

when hes playing shite or things are not looking his way the people that always think hes crap start posting and the ones who believe in him stay silent

when hes playing well his believers come out the woodwork and praise his name while those who think hes crap go into hiding. Just a theory
