How has Ronaldo been great? Are you people watching this or just getting excited?
I wouldn't say he's been great. But he has been fundamental to our success so far in this cup, in my opinion.

Why start Felix over Rafael Leao though? What possible reason could there be? Felix is so underwhelming while Leao is one of the best attackers in Serie A.
Did you see Leao after he came in? He good barely stand on his feet. Terrible cameo

Didn't think Ronaldo had a good first game but that was a lot better from him. Not sure you could say he's been great but he's not been bad either. On a side note, his chest/shoulder control is ridiculous btw... almost Fellaini level :D

I hope they let the goal stick to Bruno. Reminds me over a decade a go when Nani was awarded a goal against spurs despite it taking the most marginal of touches from Carlos Tevez. Fergie wanted the goal given to Tevez if i remember correctly but it wasn't overruled.

To be honest, I didn't feel they were particularly good.

Bruno was absolutely sensational but I didn't see the team performing better than in 2018. We were worse, much worse.

I’ll be happy with a quartel final exit, it would only be our third quarters ever at the World Cup. There are still plenty of weaknesses in this team.

Cancelo and Guerreiro can’t defend, Pepe turns 40 in 3 months and he’s our best CB as Dias’ brain turns off too often. Ruben Neves is average for this level. Felix and Leão are inconsistent and Ronaldo’s obviously nowhere near what he used to be. Bernardo’s been pretty average also. We play good in spells but look awful in some periods too, Santos has been dreadful at making subs. He needs to bring Palhinha on sooner and Dalot has to have some minutes at least. If Nuno Mendes is out, Dalot should play, not Guerreiro.

Switzerland/Serbia will both be a very tough game if we play them in RO16. Both of them beat us fairly this year already, they can do it again. Germany, Spain, France, England and Brazil are all better than this team but it’s international football and they all have their flaws too so hopefully luck goes our way.

They’re gonna win it aren’t they…

And the fecking Ronaldo fan circus will go into hyperdrive.

Please no, anyone but them (sorry Portugal fans, it’s about Ronaldo, nothing against you!).
Well they'll have to overcome him as the rest of their team is actually good and the challenge is to carry him. I think they're certainly contenders as they have quality all over the pitch.

Or like the previous World Cup when Harry Kane claimed a stray hair touched a goal-bound shot, allowing him to claim the golden boot. Farcical.

I think they can go all the way to the Semi, not sure they can beat France though but there is a chance, as performance wise they are not far apart.

Question here, do they have to get a point in the final group game against S. Korea to guarantee first place finish?

Did he touch it?
Even if he does touch it with his hair, I think it’s right call to give it to Bruno. Ronaldo does play a big part on the goal though, faking the keeper to make wrong save.

This is a decent team and Ronaldo is not as crap as some make him out to be either.
That said I wanted Portugal to win before he acted as a bell end. Now i don't want him to win the darn thing.

Apparently the goal is going to be reviewed so they might change it, the meltdown in here would be hilarious if it happens.

Don’t worry they won’t,

Brazil Spain Argentina and France are far too good for Portugal

The Leao Vs Felix question is an interesting one. Personally I rate both very highly in terms of talent, in the band with the likes of Halaand, Osimhen etc as the next top 10 players.

Initially I thought dropping Ronaldo and playing Felix central would be the play, but I haven't watched Atletico enough to know how he is leading the line. Sometimes a presence helps more.

In the end having both is not a bad thing, but I do think if they come up against a more technical team like Spain or France, having both Leao and Felix on the pitch instead of Ronaldo would help link and create attacks better.
Felix is not suit to play lone striker role, he is just like Sancho, some good touch and that’s about it, with not much presence on the pitch. His role is too similar to Bruno or Silva too, more like a support player who always drop deep, rather than main man in attack. As for Ronaldo, at least he also offers some ariel threat to the team, which Portugal needs more.

Right now I’d prefer Leao on the left. He is more of a threat with pace in attack, which Portugal lacks.

Oh I thought it has already been officially given to Bruno. Why is it going to be reviewed again?

I agree they won’t. But replace the lackluster Argentina with England, and you’ll be totally accurate. Even Portugal can beat this Argentina, and there 4-5 teams above CR7 and co.

I think they'd struggle against Spain.
Surely they wouldn’t face Spain if they both finish top of their group? (Which looks very likely) Unless they both go all the way to final.

Either way they would only meet one team in Semi (likely France or England), and one in final (likely Brazil or Spain).

Looks like all those caf managers who said he would be a hinderance for Portugal have been mighty wrong (oh no I’m shocked).
Really? He's had two poor games. Yesterday he deserves credit for a big share of Brunos first and there was a great one time pass to release Leao on the left. Other than that, he was largely useless - failed dribbles, bad choices, blocked shots, and the usual plethora of offsides. Roughly same level he's shown at United all year.

So they waited 15-20 years to see almost 38 year old Ronaldo to make this tweet?
Messi is 35 which is a huge difference in age when you’re well into your 30s as an athlete. Ronaldo at 35 scored 40+ goals in 2020. Let’s see how many goals Messi scores at age 38. In fact, I’d be surprised if he’s even playing football by then.

Nah it's pretty sad your FA and your manager bow down to the whims of one petulant individual rather than discussing the victory of your country and focusing on that. I'm sure it's great for morale though right.

Some whataboutery this. The picture illustrates the team has been carrying him. Have a manager with balls and he wouldn't get into the team.

Carrying him for nothing more than a few games. Even as recently as some months to a year ago - he was crucial for them.

Players like Bruno have only been good for Portugal very recently. He was poor in the 2 international tournaments he played in before this one.

I’m sure most people don’t even realise he was at the 2018 WC and started most of the games.

A few games is a tournament and the lead up games. He's been awful in qualifying and you got to the tournament through the skin of your teeth. He's had a minimal impact in what is one of the most creative midfield's in the World Cup. Now he's dominating proceedings about claiming a goal he hasn't scored. We'll see how the rest of the tournament goes.

The man is pathetic, the federation is pathetic bowing to his petulance. Does it matter who put the ball in the net in this instance. It gave them a goal. Of course it matters, it is all about him and his fecking records.

Ronaldo fans are just hilarious at this point. "Yeah but Messi is younger than him." And? Thats quite literally the issue with Ronaldo. No one is saying Ronaldo wasn't a fantastic footballer. The important part of that is that its past tense. It doesn't matter if he is poor because of his age, because hes got an injury or because the lunar cycle is throwing off his mojo. He is past his best and no longer worth the hassle or the negatives he brings. Hasn't been for a while.

Football doesn't care how good you were or why you are not as good anymore. It only cares that you are not good enough in the present.

Even Bruno agrees? Bruno with the prime seat close to the corner flag?

How awkward is that?

Ronaldo: I touched it. You saw it, right?
Bruno: Yes, very clearly (you giant bellend)
Santos: Lads, we are resting today but stay in the hotel. A FIFA technical team will interview each and everyone of you to determine who should be awarded the goal
Ronaldo: What do you mean who?
Santos: Oh, yes, of course, to determine Ronaldo should get the goal
Ronaldo: What about the Man of the Match award? That should get voted again
