Argentina vs Portugal. Messi vs Ronaldo. Last World Cup for both.

Brazil and France are the best two teams this year. I think that would be an excellent matchup.

England Argentina too, but i think thats not likely to happen.

France and Brazil in terms of quality but Brazil vs Argentina in terms of rivalry and the fact that we might get a world cup final with more than one red card while setting off diplomatic alarms.

They're on the same side of the draw

Brazil vs France or England.

I think those 3 have played the best football in this world cup.

France vs Brazil. My first world cup final memory was the '98 one so huge nostalgic factor. That and watching Neymar vs Mbappe face off  .

Will have been too early for you, but my overwhelmingly main association when reading the phrase "France vs Brazil" is their quarterfinal matchup in 1986, considered by some to be the finest game ever played in a WC.

Brazil vs France is the standout tie - the top two teams, top quality all over the pitch, and top-quality benchwarmers too.

Portugal vs Argentina would be an awful tie. The narrative of whoever won would be the most mind-numbinging boring shit you'll ever see.

Agree with the other posters that Brazil vs Argentina is a very overdone tie and it rarely produces an exciting match up.

England vs 1 of Brazil or France would be good, but I can see Southgate playing overly conservative if that's the case.

What I'd really love is to have a new world champion - Morocco would be great (also being the first African team), but I wouldn't begrudge the Swiss, Portugal, Croatia or the Netherlands winning it either.

France vs Brazil - Brazil win with Neymar having a starring role, while Mbappe is nowhere to be seen. Back to PSG and Mbappe's sulking and decides to be even more selfish towards his teammates.

England vs Brazil - Brazil win, their Premier League contingent return to their clubs, and the fans feel just a little bit torn about showing them unfettered support after the heartbreak of losing a major final to them.

Argentina vs Portugal - Argentina win with Messi having the game of his life and is declared player of the tournament. Ronnie vows that the truth will come out and declares himself better looking than the baffled reporter doing the post match interview.

Probably the only final that would make non-football fans watch the match would be portugal v argentina. Messi and ronaldo transcend football, everyone would want to watch it.

1. Brazil v England - from purely selfish reason of wanting to be entertained and see England in the final.

2. Argentina vs England - would be fun to see if Messi could actually ascend to the level of Maradona.

3. Argentina vs Portugal - just because Messi would wipe the floor with them, and Cristiano clearly not being anywhere near Messi's level of ability would be mildly entertaining to watch. Plus, it's about time Messi won a world cup, who better to do it against than Cristiano?

4. Brazil vs France, which is clearly the most likely final, as they are the two best teams.

Argentina Portugal with what it entails would be insane. Goat vs goat, the winner taking a big dump on the other's achievements with no chance to correct it.
But hopefully it's France v Brazil. After Neymar kicks Messi out, he gets his dream crushed by Mbappé: PSG implosion, out of the CL, club disbanded, Peace on Earth.
and again, the same boring shit in CL with the same clubs winning it year after year.
Even if they've not won it yet, at least teams like City or PSG bring some new names and excitement in the big scheme of CL things

France vs Brazil without a doubt for me. They're usually going to be entertaining games, France likes to turn up the skills when they come up against Brazil, and it usually winds up being a very entertaining game, whether it was the 3-0 of '98 or the 1-0 of '06, there was plenty to enjoy as a neutral.
We also had a very entertaining game in 1986.

From a neutral perspective, probably

1. Argentina vs Portugal
2. Brazil vs France
3. Brazil vs England
4. Argentina vs England
5. Brazil vs Spain

Something like that.

Brazil vs France is the most popular choice. I want a Brazil-England. I remember when we played Brazil in one World Cup in the morning and I watched it at school  good old days. Be interesting to watch a brazil-Spain game… both like to keep hold of possession… Neymar would get frustrated at not seeing much of the ball.

The one with the Ronaldinho free kick and subsequent red card, isn't it?

Remember it vividly, while I was only 9 at the time.

Most entertaining would definitely be Spain vs Brazil IMO.

Netherlands are good and organized, can have some great plays, but not entertaining. Argentina are pure panic and emotion but play shit on a stick football really, too content with drab games. England only ever have like 8-10 shots per game unless the opposition is garbage. France as well is too content to play negative football with just countering through Mbappe and Dembele. Can be great to watch once it opens up, but usually is a bit of a dead game and just relying on mistakes/bit of pace to break. Portugal with a different manager I'm sure would be great to watch, and they're capable of great play, but Santos just loves to shut up shop.

Brazil can play very good football, but also have plenty of periods where they like to just shut things down. Brazil looked great yesterday though in that first half, though the opposition wasn't good. I still feel like Brazil in a tough game will be like England ish, so we'll see. Spain is the only team that I am confident wants to play dominating, attacking football in every game.

I'm fine with whatever combination of Netherlands/Argentina/Brazil against France/England/Spain/Portugal. Think they'll all have a lot of good storylines and potential for good play and being even. England vs Netherlands would probably be the most dead game if anything. Would be even, but a painfully slow and low event game. So please no to that one.

Any combination with Spain would almost certainly not be entertaining. Possession football is fecking boring. Brazil vs France/England would be miles better.

Spain play possession football but they are far from boring. They are a very good side, but they aren't stupidly dominant where it's boring to watch because the others can't lay a glove on them like the Del Bosque side. They also press high, and try to attack with the possession, rather than kill time or be cautious with it.

I don't think a single neutral fan would say England as one of the 2 teams would be one of the more entertaining options  Southgate's football is effective but it's shit on a stick football. Even in comfortable win against Senegal... you still only had 8 shots in the game. It's negative, it's killing the game and trying to win on set pieces or a random counter (not an attacking style of counter football) and a 1-0 win. France I'm cautious on, as they haven't played a high level team yet. But Deschamps has in the past done the same where he likes to just shut the game down, except he has Mbappe and Dembele in attack to counter, so that's a pretty elite pair to make that effective.

Brazil vs Argentina would be mines but since both sides are on the same side of the draw bracket then either France vs Brazil or Argentina vs Portugal (Messi vs Ronaldo).

That’s the one. Wasn’t it the 2002 WC?
Indeed. Should've been Belgium vs England if not for the perfectly good Wilmots header which was disallowed in the round of 16 :(

Childhood trauma.

Dire today
Though I do think they tend to do better in big games. International football is funny. Teams like England are probably the best around at consistently, comfortably beating down on less sides.... but struggle in the big games. And then the teams who I think are set up perfectly for the big games, are prone to inconsistency against lesser teams, and so quite often simply fall too soon (Germany as an example here!).
