He was better than Scholes and Giggs from 1998-2000. There is no denying that at all. Anyone who says otherwise is just being bitter imo, overall in their career you can argue those two were better but during period he was only second to Keane at Man utd. You wouldn't of won your treble without Beckham in my view, the amount of goals he set up that season was incredible. Not just in the league but in Europe a rather large number of your goals came through him.

Your post is just bitter rather than anything else, he was a superb player but from around 2001 onwards he hasn't hit those same heights again.
Bitter? Beckham was a great player for about 24 months, but not the best or second best United player in that time. I'd wager tha Schmeichel and Stam were more important. Obviously Keane was. Heck, how many games did Beckham win himself? I'd say not nearly as many as Ole did.

Beckham was a top class player, but obviously more hype over substance. Two year flash in the pan. Is that bitter or the truth?

Modern day Joe Namath.

C) United don't make anything off merchandising, Nike do, who pay a flat fee per year for the privilege. The deal probably needs significant upgrading after the current contract runs out.
this is a point many seem to constantly forget regarding United

I've never had a United shirt with a player's name on the back, and was always under the impression that if you wanted a name on the back you went and had it put on. Could be wrong mind, as having the name of a player on the back of my shirt I have always found to be a preposterous idea. The Spanish clubs though sell them with the names on the back straight off the hangers.
Over in Barcelona last weekend the new Henry shirt seemed to gaining popularity.

Posts 22 and 27 combined give the actual picture...

I[t] clearly says that since he joined them its increased to 315 million but its not all his shirt sales but the club's inrease in merchandise as a whole over 4 years, nothing big to it.

Says commercial activities and merchandising so not just shirts. There is shirt sales, other Beckham merchandise and other money spinning tours they went on where Beckham was the main attraction, these things add up. I once remember reading adidas gave them incentives as well for signing Beckham and adding him to their club as he was at a Nike club before.
It's clear this figure is for ALL FORMS of merchandisie/activities including those not involving Backham.

If you want a pointer towards the 'Beckham effect' you could use the club's statement that
"In the time that Beckham was here, profits from merchandising increased by 137%,"
.

Now whilst some of the increase could easily be related to other factors, you can get a more accurate idea by saying that, over the period of Beckham's presence, the club's merchandise etc. sales increased by (137 / 237) x £315M in total.

That's about 182M over the time he was at the club.

I don't know who Joe Namath is but go and watch a treble DVD (which I'm sure you have) watch the CL matches and go and see just how many goals he set up. Unfortunately a few months ago my mate had it on and I had to sit by and suffer as well but one thing that really stood out was just how many he did set up, even I didn't realise it after all these years but he was probably in the CL your best player. Overall Keane was but in the CL there is a very strong arguement to say it was Beckham.

Oh and apart from Keane he was the best player at Man utd, there is no doubt about that. Anyone who watched that season knows it and is just being biased otherwise. Schmeichel was a great player but I wouldn't even say that was one of his best seasons. Again Stam was good but your defence conceded a few goals that season. 37 goals in the league and 16 goals conceded in the CL. That is over a goal a game in the CL and almost a goal a game in the league. Defensively that is quite a poor record for a team to win the title if we compare to say last season it doesn't look very good. What bailed you out was your incredible ability to score goals that season, your lot had the old Brazilian philosphy of if you score 3 we will score 4! Much of those goals came from Beckham I'd say a rather high percentage came through his pin point crossing especially in the CL. Not always getting the direct assist but his cross causing choas which resulted a goal. He did it against the good teams as well.

As for him being a flash in the pan, look at his league record:

1995/1996 - 7 goals
1996/1997 - 8 goals
1997/1998 - 9 goals
1998/1999 - 6 goals
1999/2000 - 6 goals

2000/2001 - 9 goals
2001/2002 - 11 goals + 8 assists
2002/2003 - 6 goals + 9 assists

I don't know what all his assists record are though it would be handy because at the end of the day his main job was to provide goals from the wings. The part I have in bold was the part when he was world class imo and up there with best. Even his last two seasons where some argue he poor he had a big influence in the team, those stats hold up well against most players. Now to say he was a flash in the pan for only two years is just talking rubbish. Show a bit more respect to one of the better players your club have had.

We might supporting different teams, but thanks for your contribution. I hate it when people slagged Beckham like he didn't doing anything for United.
