Also, if the amount is to be believed then whoever leaked it is a dumbass unless it was to try appease fans. Even appeasing fans won't work because right now those that need to be soothed, will not believe a word.

All this would do is let teams know we have money and puts a big ole stamp sign up saying "Come gouge us more than you normally gouge us for, we have money to spend"

It's not exactly leaked. We've been told all along that we have £80 million to spend, we get told it pretty much every week.

An insider told Soccernet: "There is no doubt that the money from the sale of Ronaldo is there for Sir Alex to spend
Technically incorrect. The money from the Ronaldo sale was spent on paying off the Glazers's PIKs. The Glazers have, however, borrowed £70m that can be used on player transfers (whether it will or not is another matter). MUFC - well, you and I - will of course have to pay this money back in due course.

im surprised how many people are saying we dont need a keeper. VDS is nearly 40 - there is no way he is going to be able to keep going much longer at the top level. Foster has been something of a flop in what was supposed to be his big season. PIG has been decent in the games he has played, but is he really consistent enough to be our #1 in the long term?

There are a few highly rated young keepers around and if the money is there I would like to see us invest in one, since a good keeper in their early/mid 20's can be in our first team for 10+ years - a good investment.

Ah the feck.
Insider sounds like a 15 yr old kid.

"the players of the quality United demand means that they would be extremely expensive"

"Sir Alex is not involved with the Red Knights, nor would he be,"
..."In any case, their bid is not reality."
So the Glazers aren't gonna sell, but, they wouldn't:
"even entertain these guys, even if they did change their minds one day."
;)

"There seems to be no proof of funds"... "they would borrow heavily in any case - so what is the difference?"
Yeah!, whats the difference!

Anyway, to the topic... We've already got Rooney, Berba, Owen, Macheda, Diouf and Danny (on loan). I think we should invest the money in a Fletcher cloning programme.

Rooney is the only world class striker we have. Owen, if he even stays next season, will be a bit part player. Diouf will be a Manucho, in my honest opinion. Welbeck and Macheda are both kids and have not been playing much this season when we all expected them too. Berbatov has been distinctly average despite what the fanbois like us to believe. If Rooney had a proper partner, we'd be a hell of a lot stronger.
Forget that, he's the only world class player we have who isn't in defence!

It could also be an attempt to downplay the conception that the club are skint and teetering on the brink of financial meltdown as that perspective certainly has an impact on the selling price of the club.

This story, if true, lends a measure of strength to the financial picture even if most of us here profess to know better, in turn increasing the valuation as far as the Glazer's are concerned.

So you keep claiming. The reality is we'd still have a midfeld incapable of carrying 2 strikers. So would still be like we are now. Our forward-line is really the least of our problems.
this. another striker would mean 4-4-2 which it has been shown our midfield cannot handle. IF we had a fit Hargreaves and in-form Fletcher, we could get away with 4-4-2 regularly, Valencia and Park on the wings. In fact I was one of those saying in pre-season that we would be moving to 4-4-2 this season now that Ronaldo was gone.

But with Rooney adadpting his game to the lone striker role, we no longer are in desperate need of another striker. If Berbatov or Owen were to leave then we would need to replace them, but with our youth strikers starting to mature, the replacement would need to be another Owen-type signing only designed for a couple of years and not for the long term. Someone like Huntelaar who is at his peak years would do the job as a backup for Rooney.

As chief said, Midfield is the area we should look at strengthening. Personally I would cut our losses with Hargreaves, try to get what we can for him and cut his name off the wage bill. Scholes and Giggs cannot realistically be expected to repeat this seasons heroics (i remember saying that last season actually!) (though if they do its a bonus) which leaves us Carrick, Fletcher and Anderson as the mainstay of our midfield - the latter of which still hasnt fully proved himself. Youth prospect-wise we are less fruitful in midfield at the moment, so for me, buying a promising, world class, fairly young CM would be the priority- possibly Rodwell or Fellaini, Defour maybe Moutinho or even Mikel if we could get him. Ideally though we would want a more attacking minded midfielder if he was to partner the likes of Carrick and Fletcher.

Left wing also presents a trouble spot - and it is here I would love for us to get Joe Cole, since he could play either on the left, or as the attacking midfielder which I suggested previously. Two birds with one stone and all that. I think getting an out-and-out winger would be a mistake anyway, unless we have significant departures - Nani, Tosic, Giggs and Park (and to an extent Rooney) can all play there, another out and out winger would be too much competition, which is why a player like Joe Cole who can also play in the middle, would be ideal.

In defence we are OK, though I feel we could do with another backup at CB, especially given Rio's recurring injury. If anything, I think we could stand to lose Brown and perhaps Neville. Entrust Rafael with the RB spot, along with JOS for the games where more defensive discipline is needed. Getting in a young CB who ideally could fill in at either of the FB spots would be absolutely perfect. Maybe Zapata? (Is he any good or just an FM legend?).

Finally, and as i said earlier, a new GK should be addressed. Foster frankly isnt good enough and we should get rid. PIG has done pretty well this season but I dont think anyone thinks he is good enough to be our long term #1. Considering VDS is now nearly 40, we definitely need to look at a replacement. There are several pretty young, highly rated keepers around (Adler, Neuer, Lloris, Ustari, Akinfeev, Mandanda) and so it strikes me as a good time to buy, since any of the above could well be snapped up by other top clubs, and the price is only going to rise.

I'll believe it when I see it. Articles mean feck all...
Then you'll never believe it as were never going go out and spunk 80 million on anyone. We may spend about 50 in the summer, because thats how much we were able to get the players we wanted. We may spend 20. It doesn't mean there's not 80 million available.

Goalkeeper
Defender (if vidic leaves, can't rely on Rio/Smalling/Evans/Brown surely?)
Midfielder
Left winger
Forward

All these need investment, if anything goalkeeper is the least of our worries.
