MICHAEL OWEN was last night offered £21million to stay at Newcastle.

Owner Mike Ashley has handed the England striker the biggest deal in Toon history — a three-year contract worth a whopping £140,000 a week.

It would make Owen not only one of the Premier League’s highest-paid stars but also one the world’s richest.

The ex-Liverpool and Real Madrid ace, 28, whose current £100,000-a-week deal expires in the summer, could leave on a free unless Newcastle tie him down now.

A Toon insider said: “It’s the best contract the club has ever offered and shows the owner is prepared to spend big when it comes to keeping the best players.

“It’s also a massive vote of confidence in Kevin Keegan, who has always wanted Owen to stay.”

The offer comes after Newcastle battled to a gutsy 1-1 draw against Manchester Untied at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Ashley is also set to offer James Milner a new deal — after rejecting Aston Villa’s latest bid of £8m.

Why is he lucky? Many clubs will offer that much for a marketable superstar like him. He might be past it, but he was a great player and still has that tag. He will earn much more in the middle east or yankland.

He's as injury-prone as Saha, perhaps even more so.

For either to win a major, multi-million contract is lucky. A £140k-a-week firmly puts him amongst the highest paid bracket in football or any other business in the land.

Not bad return for lying on the physio's table for most of your career!

He has been out injured for 70% of his tenure at Newcastle so far, and they are giving him a payrise.

If I was off work for 3 weeks a month, I doubt Id be getting a payrise..


Id class that as lucky.

Good news for Newcastle if he stays...the cost is irrelevant.

11 goals in around 24 games last season is not bad for someone whose crocked.

Keegan switched him to play deeper towards the end of last season and it suited him and the team....Owen's value is not only on the pitch..he's invaluable to have around the younger players.

Newcastle like a lot of clubs this season are finding it hard to attract players. They will still believe that despite his injuries, if they can get Owen completely fit and playing to his ability he's the man who will truly replace Shearer and be the first one to manage it.

His form at the back end of last season, as an off-striker - a new position for him, is what has earned him contract talk. He was very important to them.

And seeing that Newcastle are having trouble bringing in quality players like he is, of course they are going to pay whatever it takes to keep hold of him.

Im argueing that he is lucky.

Lucky maybe...but the way he played in a new role and what else he brings to the club IMO means he deserves the new contract.

I doubt you could afford to pay someone 140k a week and I would struggle to but someone like Ashley and his sponsors it's chickenfeed.

On the contrary, Owen is one of the unluckiest footballers in the country. He is a marvellous talent, and would still be a world star now if it wasn't for his injuries.

Not denying his talent - it's always been there to see. But, he's also been one of the most injury-prone players for a good few seasons now.

His lucklessness has just been counter-balanced by an enormous contract offer.

The same discussion has been going on the caf in regards to the value of Saha. A very talented striker who although unlucky with his fitness has been earning buckets of cash from United for almost 3 years. Some think he's not worth either the financial cost or the position he occupies in the team which could be occupied by a fit striker. Put it another way, United are about to spend close to £30m for a top striker primarily because Saha can't maintain his fitness.

Sweet job if you can get it!

Do you not think that the likes of Owen and Saha would trade a high percentage of their salaries in exchange for an injury free career?

140k for a proven 11 goals a season scorer? You could have got that from any striker in the prem. Goals per game is irrelevant as you know his games per season count will be poor.

The story itself is clearly bollocks. There is no way Ashley would pay that salary to anyone.

If Owen still wants to be an England striker he needs to get playing Champions League football... or at least UEFA!

he should tell them to stuff it and hope that somebody like spurs (berbatov replacement?) bids for him... or stick in a hatfull of goals and wait for a big club to take him on a free next summer...

however i think he will put money first and sign the deal... then spend half the season sitting in the stands whilst mike ashley slowly goes bust...

Marketable!...mainly because clueless geordies normally buy three XL sized shirts per family. Fergie, Wenger, Benetiz have all politely wrote him off in the last two seasons showing little or no interest whenever he made some noises.

Rubbish.
If Owen is worth 140k due to his ability and marketability then Ronaldo should be asking for a 250k p.w. contract.
