So much a failure that we are only 2 wins away from the biggest trophy in club football... I'd take that at the beginning of the season...

Also, a strange game at Bolton + a Teddy favour, and we'll be ranking 2002 upthere with 1999 as Fergie's greatest triumphs...

Do you think you need 4 defenders again now?

It dropped to 2 last week didn't it?

Softlad posts less these days so he figures he needs to concentrate all of his bitterness into one tidy post. Well done Softie ;)

What a ridiculous pile of shite this thread is. It's half time in the CL, win next game and we're in the final. The league seems to go Arsenal, it seems like nothing can stop that.

Speculating to accumulate I think it's called. ;)

Some of our football this year has been much better than last, so I can live with it.

Frustrating season tho.

I totally agree with that. I pay my money every season to be ENTERTAINED.....A trophy at the end of it is a bonus. ;)

Thanks Livvie, the first sensible answer or attempt to discuss the point. Do you think Veron will be at OT in red next season?

Personally I'd be bitterly disappointed if I had walked the league last year, spent £50m+ and looked like finishing third and trophyless.

It may as some have said, only be 'half-time' in the CL game but these are the same people who said our 1-0 lead would not be enough. Difference in this tie is that Bayer most definitely have the upper hand from the away leg and if they play anywhere near the way they did v us in Leverkeusen they will trounce Man Utd. They will employ a 4-4-2 at home and Man Utd have to win, should be interesting.

Fair play if you get through.

Do you think Man Utd will be going all out to get that 2nd place and qualify automatically or will they roll over if it means Liverpool don't win the league?

That's just a tad biased wouldn't you say - I'd say they played that well last night, and we earned a somewaht fortuitous draw out of it.

With Keane back in the side, they won't enjoy the same possesion in the second third which is key to their build up play. I'll bet anyone that we beat them, they're good enough to beat us, but I doubt they will.

I´d prefer us to lose v Arsenal if it handed the league to you.

No big difference in finishing 2nd or 3rd for us anyway. If we finish third, we´ll be the top seed in the qualifying round and will probably draw some minnows from Eastern Europe.

That´s not arrogant, that´s the way it is.

Re: your question ...

The first couple of months were a bit disappointing, but it´s been thrilling to watch United since December.

I want to see good football. A trophy is a bonus.

Would you still not be a tad concerned that you'd be starting a season very early after a world cup?

Training´s gonna start in early/mid July and the CL qualifiers will be played in early/mid August. I´m not concerned at all.

I have difficulty in being dissapointed because we spent 50 m and didn't get as good results as before. I am slightly dissapointed because we were not as successfull but the monetary issue is not a factor here. I enjoy having players like Veron around, he might be overpriced but so are all football players. Besides it's not like buying a car when you buy a football player, issues such as him settling down, living in a new culture can be and probably is a factor. Consequently he could start producing next year. As we spent 20+ million on him I seriously doubt the management did the planning for one season. He could start producing next season, so if you go down the ROI line I think you have to count in a few more seasons in order to say if it was a good investment or not. It is a quite interesting way you are reasoning Softlad, first you mention his price and then you think we should be pissed of because he hasn't given the desired ROI. In businesses it might work like that when the controllers do their checkups but a football fan doesn't work and think that way. You are dissapointed because you loose the game not because of some ROI ratio that you count.

As for the next CL game, Bayer have the upper hand that is correct but we are more than capable of winning away. It will require a better performance though from every single player.

As for the losing games on purpose thing, I seriously doubt any football team with self respect give away games no matter how good the cause is. When they put on the shirt they are expected to give 100 percent to win for the club. And with the WC this summer the qualifying rounds will do more harm than usual as it's the players vacation that will be cut short.

I hope Veron will stay, as he shouldn't be judged on one season. I don't think he should automatically walk into the team without earning the right tho.

It rankles to spend all that money and to possibly end up without a trophy - but we'll just have to be philosophical about it and see this season as the year we had to rebuild. Last time we won nothing, we went on to win three successive trophies and a treble. So it need only be a minor blip!

It seems that second place might be a possibility when we play Arsenal, so hopefully there will be something to fight for. If not, the players will play to win, because it's instinctive with professionals. The supporters will hope for defeat I expect......

Yes

1) Anyone who knows about football, knows that one can't buy success. You, being a Liverpool fan should know that - look at your spending the last decade and compare it with our

2) If our season is a failure, then what is yours? Any comments?

I'd say ours has been successful:

1) we are only £1m down on spending on players this season.
2) we've finished on a higher points total than last season.
3) we've won more games than last season
4) our away form has been better than last season
5) we got to the QFs of the CL at our first attempt
6) we were still in the chamionship race until 3 games from the end
7) we can still finish 2nd above Man Utd
8) the core of our team is still young and will have taken valuable experience from the the last two seasons

All that with our manager being out for 6 months, I'd say that's bloody excellent. :)
