And I'm all out of bubblegum.
Here's how it all panned out

------------------------

We're on.

I've tricked 33 of RedCafe's most fighty posters to let me put them in a game of Europa Universalis 4, a grand strategy game that covers the world from 1444 to 1821, with all the trading, diplomacy and copious amounts of conquest that entails. We could have actually played a game of multiplayer, but that would only come down to skill. What I've done instead is created them all as countries. These are entirely new countries, replacing all the old, boring countries that existed in Europe in 1444 - such as France, Sweden, Scotland and the Commonwealth of Poland-Lithuania.

The game is simple. I'm going to let the game play itself, and whether or not our Cafites succeed will come entirely down to the hapless AIs that control every country in this game. Will they make the right choice at the right time? Almost certainly not. Will we lose some countries almost immediately? Absolutely. If there are three countries next to each other, two of them will get together and eat the third (FAO: @Crackers, @Solius, @BD).

In this thread I will post regular (hehe) large updates, covering maybe every 50 years or so. Those will be linked in this post as well as in threadmarks. Along the way I will also try to post smaller and more frequent updates, for example if someone does something particularly brave or stupid. Those will just be a screenshot and a few words of sympathy or disgust. I'll try to tag people where relevant. There's a lot of you, so don't expect very personalized big updates like those novellas I used to write for the Football Manager Experiments. Some of the screenshots I post might be quite big so I might have to shrink them a bit for the thread. You should be able to just click on them to get the true size.

Just to explain the national ideas: the countries only start with the two at the top (called traditions), while they will unlock the rest over the course of the game.

This is Europe in 1444:

Final stats update

Okay, the end is here! We've finally reached 1836, after nearly 400 years of imperialism, colonialism and a surprising amount of royal marriages. This will be the last stats and maps update, but I have some other ideas for how to give a final update. Stay tuned for that.

For this update, I'll include everyone who is still alive.

And I'm all out of bubblegum.
Let's start with @Abizzz. On the left you can see the national ideas he was (mostly) randomly assigned, and to the right is a brief description. The flags/shields were also randomly generated, although I sometimes tweaked colours to match the flags. I believe Abizzz is the only one who doesn't get a colonist in a national idea, because he's so far away from the coast that if he gets there he doesn't need any more help. He's the immediate neighbour of three other players (SilentWitness to the east, adexkola to north and Dan also to the north), so he'll probably have a busy game. His ruler is King Abizzz I, who is an embezzler.

Close to him both geographically and alphabetically is @adexkola. He does get a colonist in his ideas, on the off chance he ever turns his single port into a colonial empire. He's in probably the most busy part of Europe to begin with, bordering no less than five different players. He's got some early military national ideas that he might need. King Albert IX is a free thinker.

Across the sea we have @altodevil, who may or may not have an instant rivalry with Organic Potatoes for stealing most of the Scottish provinces. This is one of those areas with three players in close quarters, so it will be a miracle if they all survive until the next big update. altodevil has a lot of naval ideas, which should come in handy. King Altod 'The Bruce' Evil is an entrepeneur.

Let's jump to another island nation, @AnotherLondonManc. He's got some really good provinces and he doesn't have many direct rivals. VeevaVee to the east (and north... and south) might covet those tasty Italian provinces, though. His ideas are also naval-focused, which should be good. He could also use that one extra diplomat to get some help against the green blob in Roma. King Geronimo I is cruel.

Finally (for this post), we have @BD. If he's lucky he could re-enact the Spanish Empire. If he's unlucky he could re-enact the Spanish Civil War, given he shares the peninsula with two other annoyingly-coloured Iberians in Solius (west) and Crackers (east). BD has a good mix of ideas, particularly some trade stuff which could be fun if he gets his empire up and running. King B D I is an embezzler, so he'll probably need all the money he can get. Oh yeah, and he has Madeira, which should be good for either colonization or footballers.

BTW, if you guys spot any mistakes while I'm doing these like wrong names, wrong ruler skill (should all be 5-5-5), let me know. I'm still technically in the edit phase, so I can change stuff. Worst case I can go into the save files, so I might fix stuff after I start running too.

For me, as someone who spent years with this game, winner is obvious; Solius or Eboue.

@nimic .....no country for me? :( . I missed your original thread. And i LOVE this game.

And I'm all out of bubblegum.
To start the next batch, let's go to @BootsyCollins. His country is already so big that to capture it in all its glory I had to zoom so far out that individual province names disappeared. He might not be in the centre of European action, but at least it's reasonably safe (only bordering two players, and Samid only barely). He could also start colonizing Siberia, which is something every Finn must have dreamed of in their youth (his capital is Helsinki). He's got a good mix of ideas for his strict King Cantona the Cantonoise I.

Next up is @Crackers, another Iberian with dreams of Empire. He starts with the Azores, the furthest extent of European power, so if only he can figure out how to sail due west he might well be an early colonizer. If Solius and the aforementioned BD don't get in his way, that is. He's got some quite strong early ideas, which he might need to use. King Tarcus III is calm, just like Crackers

Next up we have another German: @Dan. I see I've given him a colonist but not Abizzz, even though they're strictly speaking in similar spots. If Abizzz wants a colonist I can give him one too. Dan's nation is centered around Dresden, a famously problem-free city in recent German history. Being in the Holy Roman Empire might be both a benefit or a challenge, we'll see. His two starting ideas are really set up for him to build a prosperous country. His cruel King Kodos I, maybe not as much.

Moving to the Balkans, we've got @Denis79. A reddish country surrounded by reddish countries, hopefully he'll start conquering some of them to make it easier to understand the map. He only has a single bordering player (Grib to the south), but many more not very far away. Denis' ideas are really set up to maximize production - of both stuff and dead enemies. King Divljak I is secretive, so I'm afraid to say more.

Rounding out this batch we've got @Dr. Dwayne, famously a real doctor. He's got a tidy little country on the Baltic coast. He actually only borders Dan to the south, but he'll quickly come into contact with others. His specialties are trading and artillery, and otherwise has a nice mix of national ideas. King Dwazza is a scholar (and has an heir named Hermann, which checks out).

Just so this is a little bit more understandable, where it says "Traditions" it means they start with those things. The "Ideas" they unlock along the way, and the "Ambition" they get after unlocking all the other ideas.

I haven't actually started running time yet, so go to the sign-up thread and make a country if you can find a spot. I'll do these today and maybe tomorrow, then I start running the game.

This is the last batch for now, the rest to follow either later tonight or more likely tomorrow. With the Andycoleno9 seal of approval, it's @Eboue. He's not big, but he's got some very strong provinces. I can foresee a strong rivalry with SilentWitness to this north. His national ideas are all over the place, but at least we should never run out of Eboueses. I now see I made his ruler a woman, but Queen Rooney in Paris is a bold fighter. I should probably change her to a man, since women aren't allowed to fight and that is a fighting trait.

Next up is @Grib, who's got another island nation. It's a strong start, but hobbers over in Constantinople might want to fight for all those nice Greeks. He's got a heavily naval and trade focused set of ideas. Fittingly, King Leonidas I is a navigator.

Speak of the devil, because now we've got @hobbers, the (probably) mortal enemy of Grib. Constantinople is a very strong capital, and he can expand into Europe or into Asia if he wants to. He's got some very strong missionaries to use on Catholics and Muslims alike. Though King Hob the Horrible I is just, so maybe he won't want to.

Next in line is a latecomer to the sign-up thread @Igor Drefljak, which explains why is country is at least two countries. If he can make some allies he could be fine, but Vidyoyo (the big yellow blob) seems like a rather big threat. He also borders adexkola in the south, who might want those German provinces. He's got a good set of naval ideas, fitting for his country of countries. King Ole's At The Wheel is industrious.

Finally we have @KirkDuyt, who seems to be trying his best to recreate the Netherlands. The Dutch provinces are really quite valuable, but that also means he'll probably have people trying to take them away from him. He shares a very long border with adexkola, but maybe that extra diplomat can help him avoid conflict. King Dutch Jesus is calm.

@Vidyoyo isn't attacking me. We're forming an alliance, going to rule from our Island.
While mainland Europe attacks each other, we're gonna build the biggest Navy in the world and rule the sea.

We need to keep an eye on @BootsyCollins , as he's joined with us, but that Orange Yellow alliance will last the test of time

Me and Grib will form a mighty Greco-Byzantine empire. If Leonidas lives long enough to have a daughter, I'll marry her to further strengthen our alliance.

Nice work @nimic

I've had this installed for ages but never gathered the strength to work out how to play it. Maybe this sim will twist my arm

It's fun! There's a lot of systems to learn, but you can do it a bit at a time. Lots of different countries to learn with too.
EU4 has one of the steepest learning curves in gaming. At least 50 hours before it clicks...

Hoi4 is a bit easier to pick up imo. But Hoi4, EU4 and the CK series are all excellent if you want to sink 100 hours into conquering the world as Luxembourg

Looks good nimic thanks. Though I've little idea what's going on, I know that if I have to make an alliance I'd go with Solius (no offence Crackers)
