From the 19/20 Valencia Player of the Year Thread:
So, many moons ago I predicted that Valencia would be a brilliant player for us at right back when he was a source of ridicule for us at right back.

He went on to be a brilliant player for us at right back and I try to mention it as often as possible.

This year’s Valencia is going to be Scott McTominay. He’s going to develop into a key player for us this year. Not only working his arse off defensively but beginning to stamp his authority on the ball too.

Any other predictions? Slim picking to be fair.

This year is a little more difficult in my opinion, we have a core team and the players on the fringes are either obvious dead wood or have terrible injury records.

So due to lack of genuine candidates this year I am going to go for a long shot. Juan Mata.

He seems like a strange choice given the signing of VdB and with Bruno already here and Sancho likely incoming (There’s probably even a good chance we will let him move on), however, I think there’s actually a chance that he might prove himself to be a key player at times and in important moments throughout the season. I actually think the introduction of more technical attacking players is going to bring the best out of him when he does play. He’s a player who compliments other players, an intelligent player who reads the game well and links up with other intelligent and technical players in a way that not many others can in our squad.

Go on then let’s have an outside bet...

Timothy Fosu Mensah! I predict a large injury crisis and he comes in and does a decent job saving our season!

All hail TFM!

Rojo. We can’t find anyone to take him off our hands and he’s already doing double training sessions, you know?

And i'm not joking. I don't think we'll shift him. I think he'll be given a shot at CB, either in a back 2 or a back 3 - and he'll stay injury-free and make it his own.

Pretty decent thread, @Pexbo

We should have a poll, if possible.

That said, my choice for the person who'll exceed all expectations this year and have a stellar season is AWB. Especially if we sign Sancho. I know we've been critical of his ability to attack the space, but having someone like Sancho gathering attention would allow AWB space and freedom which he will hopefully exploit and put in some cracking crosses.

Axel Tuanzebe will overcome his injury problems and become our 3rd choice centre back, and even start pushing Lindelof for 2nd choice.

Mata will start less than 10 games this season.

I would agree with you but Ole wont play him in enough games for us to witness his impact. We have very good technical players coming into the club and now is the time for us to utilize intelligent players like Mata but he will be neglected like he always is. Ole will however play him in weakened teams next to Lingard were he will be completely useless. it really hurts.

I kind of feel you, he has the ability but he can't stay fit for his life and has the ocasional huge brain fart. If he can get rid of these 2 he surely has a chance.

He'll be this year's Fred. Which to me means that he'll be better than the previous year but still far from being good enough.

Jesse goal a game Lingard.

But really, Chris Smalling will be our best defender next year if he stays.

Funnily enough, I had a similar thought the other day - I have a hunch that Mata will have some absolutely key moments this year. We saw last year how effective he can be when surrounded by top players a la Bruno, Pogba etc. I think getting him on the pitch late on in games this year could prove quite useful with his intelligent movement and link up play, especially when you add VdB, and potentially Sancho in to the mix.

What does having a fantastic season for us mean anymore? You would consider players like De Bruyne, Bruno to have had fantastic seasons. Fantastic players don't get left out of the starting 11 in 8 out of the last 9 league games. Fred can be called fantastic relative to his performances in the prior season. But given a choice, would you sign him for 50 million again? Would anyone sign him for 30 or 40?

That guy with the hair in the youth teams. Can't remember his name or be arsed to try to find the spelling. Plays in midfield.

FYI - This thread is about players who have been written off in some quarters who you think will come back and prove their worth in some capacity.

This is a a legit shout:

Bailly perhaps? That's if he avoids injuries.. Mata is going to get zero game time this season, if he manages a few minutes here and there I think his physical weaknesses are going to stick out more than ever compared to our improved attacking options. In the recent training sessions he seems to spend more time on the sidelines observing than getting involved.

James for me . I know he is not going to get as many chances, especially if we get Sancho. I think he could turn into a super sub coming on in the last twenty minutes with tired defenses. Also would like to see him more on the left side. After losing his dad and coming to grips with playing for a huge club i'm really hoping he takes his chances this year.

I'll go with Jesse Lingard reinventing himself as a wing back in a 3-5-2 formation. So a true "Valencia player of the year".

OK my new nomination is me as a user. I've been written off in this topic by some but I will prove myself over the course of this season.

Failing that I think bailly may be that guy this year.

I said Matic last season when he seemed to be universally hated.

We've got the point where I don't think we have that many Valencias in the squad, our team's a lot better now than it has been in a long while, most of the remaining Valencias are either on the verge of leaving or have already left.

With that being said my vote will go to James. He's not particularly popular and I think most agree he never should have played as much as he did last season, his confidence was shot and he looked burned out after a couple of months. I think a season where he's an impact sub will suit him better and remove a lot of pressure he was visibly feeling.

I honestly believe it has to be one of Bailly or Rojo. Considering we seem to prioritize other areas in the transfer market, Bailly and Rojo are likely to be given a lot more opportunities this season with the congested fixture list.
Bailly does have an unfortunate history of injuries plus Rojo is left footed and can even play LB, so I would say Rojo.

Mata had a really good game today, usually does in games where the opposition sit deep and he has time on the ball. One of the few players we have that can keep the game ticking along and not lose possession cheaply
