Starting a new thread to cover this seasons FA Youth Cup match(es).

First up, Salford away tonight.

Be interesting to see the team that is put out. With all the incomings over the summer, and the movement of players beat the 18's, 23's and even first team (Shola), I think it'll be hard to predict the team.

Either way, looking forward to a good run in this years competition.

Ooh I like that lineup. Interestingly, Zidane Iqbal's on the bench, but seeing Gore start makes up for it, for me.

Only on MUTV for UK/IRE mate.

First 15 minutes, as poor as I have seen this team. Can't put one pass together. Everything out for a throw-in. Incredibly.
With the way they passed the ball around, it seemed like they were getting accustomed to the pitch and conditions in general. They're much better with their passing now; they just need to up the tempo, next, in order to stretch Salford.

So far, the wingers haven't gotten too involved. Even though Emeran has had several touches, he has a lack of options to pick out. Salford are playing a very defensive game, and the addition of Gore into that setup makes things more difficult.

United are growing into the match now. Hansen-Aaroen was given the ball relatively high up the pitch, and he slipped a pass through to McNeill. The keeper charged up just in time to block the first shot, but the ball rebounded out to the left side where a United player took a shot. The ball was deflected away via the head by a Salford defender, and the ball made its way back to McNeill who was charged at by the Salford keeper again. Eventually, the ball came to Savage whose shot when wide of the goal albeit with some interference from a Salford defender.

This pitch really isn't set up for a passing game. The ball slows down real quick whenever a pass is made, and it allows Salford to get tight on the United players. The players have already tried going long earlier to no avail, so I have no issue with them keeping their passes shorter for now.

Oh man, I wasn't expecting this! Daniel Gore gets his first U18s goal for United!

The play started from the left inside area of the midfield with McNeill receiving a quick forward pass from the back and playing a quick one-two off of Gore. He then drives forward into the centre before playing a pass to the right flank out to Garnacho. Garnacho then plays a pass ahead of Hughes, who puts in a great lofted first-time cross into the far post. Gore was there to beat the full back to the ball and headed the ball into the net.

Gore's quite a short player, yet he was able to get to the ball with a good run and well-timed leap, and his header beat the keeper on his right side.

Gore's been growing into the game. He's playing sort of a second-striker-ish #10 role, going quite high up the pitch and operating more on the left inside area of the pitch. At the start, he was barely getting the ball as United were choosing to go longer to play it behind Salford's back line, but as United started to keep the ball on the ground, Gore started to get more involved albeit with him still remaining high up the pitch. I guess the plan here is to have Hansen-Aaroen be more of a playmaking influence as well as allow McNeill to roam and pick up the ball slightly deeper to drag defenders around.

With that said, Hansen-Aaroen has been quite solid, defensively, and Svidersky's done a great job in anchoring the midifeld.

How is that Salford corner allowed to be taken? The ball was nowhere near the quadrant line, yet the ref decided to let it go.

I'm sorry, but this seems to be another case of "rules for thee, none for me" in underage football involving United.

Fernandez has been really outstanding. So mature - always in total control and plays us out of a lot of trouble. He actually looks more impressive as a central defender than at left-back

The more he gets on the ball, the calmer the whole team gets. He has had the same sort of impact tonight as Ramos tends to have for Real Madrid when he gets on the ball. He still has some way to go, defensively, but I don't think anyone can question his ability on the ball.

Was thinking the same. Would like to see him play more there when he's got more defensive work to do but his distribution has been outstanding

Is this pitch just a giant green carpet?

What a pass that was by Bjorn Hardley. Salford stood off of the back line and were lulled into a false sense of security. Hardley then played a great through pass forward to Garnacho, who was coming inside from the left flank. Garnacho then feinted twice on the ball whilst shifting it to his right before he took his shot, which was blocked and cleared afterwards.

Emeran hasn't
He's had the same problems as Garnacho except his dribbling has been looser. Having said that, he did make a good run into the box and was picked out before attempting to loft the ball over the keeper. He had two more Salford defenders to beat after successfully beating the keeper, but they got to the ball before he could.

Also, Gore comes off after barely being involved in the 2nd half for Marc Jurado. Charlie Savage moves into the midfield, which allows Hansen-Aaroen to play higher up the pitch.

Yup, McNeill has shown why he's one to take seriously with that goal. He makes a nice little run to make himself available to Garnacho, who passes the ball to his feet. McNeill takes one touch to settle and then uses his second touch to get past the Salford defender. The same defender tries jump in with his right foot to win the ball, but McNeill gets past him with relative ease. By this point, McNeill is near the touchline, and as he bear towards the goal with no one else near him, he scores a tremendous goal with a shot high and just inside the far post. The keeper wasn't ready for that shot, that's for sure.

Echoing other sentiments, Fernandez has been a pillar of composure. He even looks a bit like Ramos when he had his long hair, he's just missing the head band.

Full time: Salford 0-2 United

After the first 15-20 minutes, this became a formality for United, who had an easy match and were in 2nd gear for most of the match. A bunch of the players performed with maturity and displayed good decision-making even if they did play it a bit safe. The next round will leave us with tougher opposition, but this side have shown that they're capable of controlling games no matter the conditions.
