I did this originally in November in the now locked Ole thread and said I would update it at the end of the year.

I know some will fairly say that a calendar year is irrelevant and only points between August and May should be looked at, but I think this shows real progression for United and though 2020 has been a cnut of a year for many of us, for United and Ole it's been pretty pretty good!

This includes all competitive games in the calendar year.

Make of it what you will, but in the calendar year of 2020 you've been better than Liverpool in pretty much every metric. Discuss.....

Clearly shows that it really is neck and neck between us and Liverpool...

Sign Jack Grealish and I would be super confident of finishing above them in the league.

I have seen a lot of these threads and lots of such comparisons. In most comparisons we look fantastic, but we have to remember that the season is from August to May and that is the period that matters the most. What I am saying is that player mentality will play a very strong role in coming months. Also as much as 2020 has been great we are into a new season and all teams have a fair chance to be top 4 but a strong winning mentality should not only get us far but also put pressure on other clubs.

I remember Liverpool fans saying exactly this about their team under Klopp the year before he started winning trophies. Progress was there to be seen too. Our metamorphosis is complete, we are top of an imaginary league.

No it was not. We didn't win anything and Liverpool won the league. We lost 3 semi finals. It was a disappointing year by any objective metric.

However, we showed significant improvement in 2020 and have an exciting squad now. Performances on the pitch are improving, and we need to keep working to get better.

This team is still way off their peak, and can get so much better.

Here is hoping that 2021 is a great year!

Edit: Also, enough with the Liverpool comparisons. The fact is that they were playing at a canter for the 10 games after lockdown. Those games meant nothing for them and you can never disregard it's impact on a stat like this.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
Good year? Yes.

Great year? No. That's going too far. We lost the three semi-finals last season and got knocked out of the CL group stages this season. Our league form has been similar to a Liverpool team who obviously took their foot off the pedal towards the end of last season. So no, great year is going overboard. But it definitely was a good year and a significant improvement over the previous seasons, and hopefully there is more to come.
