Listened to the new Maiden twice.

It’s really bloody good.

That intro riff to Writing on the Wall is *chef’s kiss* Great solo too.

The guitar work on Death of the Celts is also really good. I can see that one being great live. Oh, the bass too!

The Parchment is also awesome. Again, the guitar work stands out, but it’s just a really good song overall.

Stratego, Days of Future Past and The Time Machine are good too. I’m not sure if I’d say this is the best of the more modern Maiden albums, but it is a very strong effort from the band, and likely to finish near the top of my eventual albums of the year list. Perhaps at the top.

Darkest Hour is the only song here that doesn’t do anything for me.

Hell on Earth is an incredible closer. When the Wild Wind Blows, Empire of the Clouds, and now Hell on Earth is one heck of a run of closing tracks.

I feel a Maiden marathon coming on…
Absolutely amazing album, I think I enjoy all of it. Can't stop listening to it.

The parchment, that final word that Bruce holds is amazing.

Harsh

Do you mean the title track or have you heard the entire album?
True...

Utter shit is a bit harsh

I don't live here anymore is sorta okay, not as good as past releases

Living Proof reminds me of a poor version of something from David Gilmore

Having seen them live in Philadelphia a couple years ago (Mind blowing experience), I'd expect that exceptional fullness of musical creativity, but it's not the same

War On Drugs is an epic band from Philadelphia, Pa, USA

Although their recent release is utter shit
Absolutely adore the album 'Lost in the Dream', one of the best albums of the 2010s.

I liked every song I heard from A Deeper Understanding but I don't know why I listened to the whole album (added to my todo list)

Illuminati Hotties had previously been my low bar for bands I avoid listening to based on name alone - that bar has now been lowered.

Stuff I've enjoyed listening to so far this year:

LPs

https://wednesdayband.bandcamp.com/album/twin-plagues-2

(Three sisters)
(Twin plagues - live)

Treads familiar ground, but does it really well. Love her songwriting & the pedal steel sound, complements her voice nicely. Thought their audiotree session was a bit disappointing, the tuning never sounded right. Handsome Man is so immediately pleasing.
https://rosali.bandcamp.com/album/no-medium

(Bones)

Probably biased by the stuff I'm aware of, but Crazy Horse seems really in this year, feel like I've listened to a load of albums referencing them. Love her voice over a great band sound, really solid album throughout.
https://juliashapiro.bandcamp.com/album/zorked

(Do nothing about it)

Have never been able to fully get into Chastity Belt (heh) but I really like this. Do Nothing About It sounds so much like Elliot Smith. It nails taking what I guess some would call a miserable sound, & branching out into multiple superb uplifting melodic lines. The chorus section & the harmonies within it & that Heatmiser sounding outro bit are so beautiful. Interesting that it's co-produced & mixed by Jay Som / Duterte, I think she has a great ear for melody.

(The moral compass of a self-driving car)

If I'm not in the mood for it, my attention can slightly drift over the full album, but its highs will snap me back into it. I love 1N914.
https://richardmichaeldawson.bandcamp.com/album/henki

(Lily)

I loved Lily & Methuselah so much that the rest of the album initially seemed slightly disappointing in comparison. But I'm getting more into it with each listen, think their sounds work really well together. When the band's in full flow it's incredible.
https://ovlov.bandcamp.com/album/buds

(The wishing well)

I don't think I'll ever dislike anything that Steve Hartlett puts out. The Wishing Well sounds so effortless & is probably up there with the best they've written.
https://rachika.bandcamp.com/album/our-hands-against-the-dusk
https://rachika.bandcamp.com/album/fragments

(Memory as miniatures - live)

The full length has Rachel's/Duster highs that really change your mood. Not a huge ambient music fan but it works really well here.
https://themountainmovers.bandcamp.com/album/world-what-world

More Crazy Horsey jams. Wish his vocals were a bit stronger but really like the playing.
https://licebanduk.bandcamp.com/album/wasteland-what-ails-our-people-is-clear
(live)

Still not sure if I like this, but I've listened to it a lot, which has to count for something. The high concept stuff puts me in mind of Spock's Beard, which isn't a good thing. But I really like aspects of their music, the vocals are interesting, if a bit too effects laden for me.

Bit nuts that this was recorded all the way back in 2014, but it's nice to have something decently recorded rather than just having to rely on youtube live videos.
https://agusaband.bandcamp.com/album/en-annan-v-rld

Not a fan of the flute, nor the 10 minute intro before the 2nd track gets going, but I really like the music when it does.
https://drunkensailorrecords.bandcamp.com/album/st-lp-14

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gu0uS4q4Wu0 (live)

Probably not got the strength of songs to elevate it above it's nice Magazineish sound, but it's really solid throughout. Fun listen.
https://civicivic.bandcamp.com/album/future-forecast

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dt77UoJA52s (Radiant eye)

Likewise a bit punky for me over a full album, but it's a really good collection of songs. Love the horns on the opener.
https://lightning-bug.bandcamp.com/album/a-color-of-the-sky

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxSUm8Z_oTY (I lie awake)

The album did nothing for me the first couple of listens, found it too wishy washy. Then I Lie Awake got stuck in my head (real cocteau twins refrain) & I got into the rest of the album through it. Has some beautiful moments.
https://starflyer59.bandcamp.com/album/vanity

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVKDuioeGGo (Life in bed)

A real downer of an album, but with some good moments.
https://wearefacs.bandcamp.com/album/present-tense

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPch5VGPPDE (live)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHOgY0e4J3U (Strawberry cough - live)

Love the sound, just not sure the songs are there again making the album a bit of a drag by its end.

EPs

https://meatwavechicago.bandcamp.com/album/volcano-park
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_l4FdJOGWlE (Tugboat - live)

One of my favourite current bands, the drumming always makes me smile.
https://cusptunes.bandcamp.com/album/spill-ep
https://cusptunes.bandcamp.com/track/i-cant-die
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTDTl-1ZZ-U (live)

Obsessed with I Can't Die, one of the great covers too! Think the EP has a really good feel.
https://landoftalk.bandcamp.com/album/calming-night-partner
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6S25uSEbnM (Moment feed)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnunG--kOh8 (Something will be said)

I like that the press release states that they had a government grant to record 5 songs in 10 days, yet the EP is only four tracks long. Moment Feed brought the excitement back of the early stuff, & I think Something Will Be Said might end up just below Quarry Hymns as the best thing they've written. One of my favourite songwriters.

Songs:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1ZCcJLEvhM

The album's a bit too Primal Screamish for me, but I love the closer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwhQSTezXSU

Really like a handful of tracks from the album & this one might be my most played track this year, got really stuck in my head. Great bassline & solo.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXium0u9xPI

Another ear worm, just couldn't get into the album.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PuqlOTyJt0

Great single & music, I just can't do spoken word vocals over a full length, which is my loss.

That Lightning Bug album was one I dismissed after one listen. Maybe I should have given it more of a chance.
