Himannv

Tactical setup

  • 4-2-3-1 High line, High press
  • This is inspired by the recent Man City team but it's not an exact replica
The following is how Pep's City line up in the attacking phase after their recent tactical adjustments.

Note the fullbacks tuck in to flank the DM (Rodri) when the team is in possession, which results in the following structural advantages:

  • Control in midfield to prevent them from being overrun.
  • License for the likes of Gundogan to step into that inside left channel. In short, the option for the holding midfielder to step up and cause a numerical advantage.
  • The fullbacks are quick so they snap back to a back 4 when they lose the ball.
  • Stopper type options to deal with counters.
  • Dias, Stones, and Rodri have creative license, but also cover to allow them to play out with less defensive concerns.
  • 5 players in attack without too many defensive responsibilities.
  • Plenty of options in terms of passing lanes.
  • Favours good buildup play.
  • Favours pressing from the front due to the numerical advantages up front.

Attacking tactical approach

The following is how the team will line up when they have the ball.

  • Scirea and Kohler offer creativity and play-making from the deep.
  • Rijkaard is the player running the game, flanked by fullbacks who can play but can also offer defensive cover
  • Vieira plays further forward and this setup enables him to use his attacking skills more when we have the ball, passing between the lines and creating chances for the team
  • Rivaldo drops into the inside left channel and makes those on-the-ball runs into the spaces created by the movement of the front 3.
  • The front 3 score goals and offer lots of off-the-ball movement.

Defensive tactical approach

  • Pressing from the front with the front 4 and also Vieira helping out.
  • However, it's not just the front 4 but the whole team that will work on winning the ball back quickly
  • Kohler and Vogts are key to preventive counters - Kohler I think is probably the best pure defender and I wouldn't have Vogts far behind.
  • The fullbacks are both quick and drop back into formation when we lose the ball.
  • People will probably question Banks as a sweeper keeper in such a system, but from the few games I've seen featuring him, he looked very comfortable with his distribution and reading of the game. Anyway, here's a quote straight from the horse's mouth:

Interviewer: With goalkeepers today having to play out from the back, often operating as a ‘sweeper-keeper’, do you think you would enjoy it were you still in your prime?

Gordon Banks: I wouldn’t mind it, actually, as I used to enjoy playing outfield during five-a-side games. I used to love it – I’d always say, “Let someone else go in goal!" Having the ball at my feet wouldn’t faze me at all. I had an alright finish on me, too!

@Himannv i know you said its not a replica but its a crucial role for Pep team and you dont have it so im curious to hear your thoughts on it. Its pretty much Pep roulette in terms who will play at City but no matter who runs out you know there will be one little magician in the middle of the park who can get his way out of tightest position, get his 80+ passes and pretty much make the whole team tick.

Incredibly tough to separate. Two great teams. Lots to like in Himans and also in Ecstatics team. Love all the pairings and in Ecstatic team - Cerezo/Falcao, Kaka/Sheva/Cafu, Platini/Giresse.

On the flip side, excellent base from Himanv - Kohler/Scirea alongside Vogts is a dream defensive line, especially protected by Rijkaard/Vieira base.

What shades it for me is the distinct lack of playmaker in Himan's team. There are a lot of players that are great off the ball, but not many to control the tempo and flow of the game. To me Rivaldo is not that guy at #10 position given the rest of the cast.

Thanks for your comments gents. This would be a quiet game but with quality discussions.

I was off last weekend so most of us would be off today on the internet I presume.

I will raise several topics and then Himann will be back at some point.

First, @Himannv is doing a good job here and is presenting his philosophy and there is a thinking and story

I see a strong team obviously with a different approach:
- a trio in midfield strong physically (Rijkaard, Vieira and Rivaldo) with strong ball retention skills
- straight-forward players like Boniek and Kalle I would expect relatively hard-working

I am curious to know more about Pavoni, maybe will have to look at his previous game.

Scirea is a relatively conservative sweeper so won't expective the opposing team to have a high defensive line.

So I see a team of pure specialists there.

I really can't seem to separate the teams. Both are fantastic — Ecstatic in a more expansive way and Himannv had built a very Gio-esque juggernaut, absolutely monstrous.

Figueroa — Förster compensate very well for a traditional "1982" issue with defensive side. Scirea/Pavoni/Rijkaard/Vieira/Rivaldo/Boniek certainly have enough creativity to provide the forward line with enough chances.

Very close. Himan needs a better playmaker and Ecstatic needs a ball winner to do the dirty work. Voted Himan, but I may change my vote this match.
I agree I do not have the typical destroyer in central midfield so the clash of styles is interesting here as Himann opted for a typical tactical system in a draft with:
- the official defensive holding midfielder (Rijkaard)
- the powerful B2B Vieira.
- an advanced playmaker

The ability of my team to win the ball should not be underestimated because I have multi-facets players so should be assessed through a holistic approach.

The battle midfield would be interesting because the quatuor (Platiresse/Falcazo) will try to kidnap the ball

Platiresse is a central duo blessed with a sense of sacrifice and who like to defend. I wouldn't say the same about Rivaldo.

H clearly lacks a conventional playmaker - but I don't think that's a weakness per default. Does he lack overall creativity? I don't think he does.

This is very close for me - can't call it at the moment.

That Himannv team looks more suited to play fast and direct football while Ecstatic is full a brilliant playmakers (maybe even a bit of an overload on first glance).

Not sure Himannv opted for the best tactic here barring in mine his personnel and opposition tbh.

@Ecstatic I would prefer a standard "default" formation pic - and then spoilered pics illustrating particular shapes (offensive or defensive).

But I like your team - it's excellent, in fact.

Looks like a Physiocrat approved OP.

Difficult one to settle. Both teams are really well constructed and true to how they want to play. Himmanv fast and direct; Ecstatic sexy on the ball. Player choices are tremendous too - all of Himmanv's midfield and attack having shone in more vertical and counter-punching teams; and all of Ecstatic's midfield and attack have looked the part in narrow units. Cannot find a fault in how either team is built or the choice of personnel.

Boniek should have started centrally and Rivaldo leftwards.

I can understand why the current setup looks more obvious, but Boniek in the centre will make up for the missing playmaker.

I was thinking that but mainly for the counter attacks. I would want Boniek to be the main outlet on the counter so would want him central and furthest forward with the license to roam

I'd expect Boniek and Rivaldo to interchange frequently. (And as I understand it, Himann indicated as much in the OP.) With Eto'o in the mix as well.

Congratulations @Ecstatic
I'll address some of the posts later in the day or tomorrow if I get some time.
Thanks.

Weird feeling to go through given the quality of your team. As you can see, I was not in a position to say a negative thing about your choices and players.

A scoreline does not necessarily makes a specific sense and if I had to imagine a rationale, I would then say you have multi-faceted offensive players. Also, I am not sure Eto'o won a lot of games in these drafts as he might be viewed as a secondary player in a team.

I would have been a happy loser for once. The only regret is that you have not been in a position to post.

What an absolute shame that we didn't get to see this defense even once

Not to mention Rijkaard and Vieira...
