Egypt looked all over the place whenever Nigeria launched a counter attack.

What are big rivalries on the African continent? Hope some of them get played this tournament.
This is more of a UK perspective, not sure if it's the same in those countries, but Ghana/Nigeria is the rivalry that sticks out to me.

You are right, also Egypt/Algeria is a good one to watch out for.

Only when it comes to jollof rice :nervous:

Football wise... Nigeria has had more tussles with Cameroon. 2000 still stings, but that was a formidable Cameroon team
Exactly ... There were the Okocha vs Eto'o undertones as well.

Ah so it's quite an unstable region I can imagine. Would BH do anything during AFCON do you think?
To be fair even in Nigeria, they're mostly constrained to the rural northern regions. I wouldn't think they'd have any real impact of the AFCON was held there. The instability in Nigeria is mostly down to the government itself and the tribal divisions and tensions it stokes.

Ah, fair enough. I did think of Nigeria/Cameroon but I hadn't heard much about it for years. Ghanaians and Nigerians in my neck of the woods are always bickering about everything under the sun, football included

Senegal vs. First timers Gambia is as huge as rivalries get

Two geographical neighbours that share cultural and ethnic roots where football tensions have led to border closures in the past

Joe Aribo looks a player. Seen him a few times in European games and he has impressed.

Nigeria so far with the best performance of the AFCON. I see a Western African team winning it tbh. I don't think a North African team have ever won an Afcon in Western Africa.

Any players to keep an eye on during the tournament? (Ones not playing in England right now, Germany / Spain are okay)
Issahaku is a big talent for Ghana. Watched him for the u20s and was the best player on the pitch (and the tournament) at 16. Think he's been linked to Liverpool too.

Queiroz is an awful manager, imagine playing Salah as a striker.
He's hopeless. Playing archaic football and benching players like Zizo, playing Salah in the wrong place, there were grounds to fire him after that game.

Nigeria are winning this, especially when Osimhen is allowed to play, they simply have too much quality. Simon btw is the sort of winger that can end a full backs career.

Napoli put a statement out that he withdrew from the tournament and returned to Italy
The Nigeria international returned to Italy earlier this week after testing negative for COVID. He has been forced to the sidelines due to a cheekbone injury, but could soon return to action with a protective mask.

He was offside for like 20 minutes straight. Not once in that entire move did he bother to at least pretend to step onside

Egypt. We won it at Ghana 2008 and Angola 2010. 7 times as record winner of this competition.

I'm so disapointed in the ACN so far. I thought COPA was bad, this is worse, the only watchable game was probably Nigeria, the rest was garbage.

Angola is a southern country. And you also won it in Burkina Faso in 1998.

The common thing in all these is that you had a team almost exclusively made of players evolving in Egypt and with big experience of African club competitions.

Now half of your starting eleven are playing in Europe. It’s not easy for them to adapt to the weather and the conditions.

Surely when people say a certain player is one of the best in Europe, he has to be one of the best in the world. European football is at the top of the tree.

The football has been poor so far with the Nigeria game the only one with any quality.

Yeah all this talk about most of the football being garbage, is garbage talk

It's been low scoring (by the way, equating low scoring games to boring/low quality affairs is American sports fan talk) so far. But I can identify 4 games that were actually good and engrossing, and I've not watched as many as I would have liked:

Cameroon - Burkina Faso
Cape Verde - Ethiopia
Nigeria - Egypt
Algeria - Sierra Leone

Senegal - Zimbabwe and Sudan - Guinea Bissau were definitely eyesores. Have not seen the rest, but odds of all of them being eyesores is low.

Still early days too! The weather is hot and humid in most stadiums, it'll take a few days for the players to acclimate.

I watched 2 games yesterday, both were good games.

Especially the Nigeria vs Egypt game which is what you expect from 2 of the best teams in the competition.
Like you said once players acclimate it will get better but out of all the games the only ones I've been disappointed in is the Senegal game and the Morocco - Ghana game (both teams were missing some key players) especially Morocco.
