Alex Scott | Bournemouth reject Chelsea approach

as soon as Fernandes went to Spurs, this kid should have been purchased

We’re skint because we’ve been buying players on credit and we now need to pay big sums every summer to keep up. Supposedly that let the reason they borrowed again off the credit facility to pay some of the credit card

Im sure that’s not the only reason too

That's nonsense. We've paid off about £120 million of that facility in the last 6 months and I think it'll turn out to be more. We have huge headroom if we wish.

The clubs in a very good position, operating profits up, wage bills down, unexpected incomes from sell ons and Amorim joining Milan. A guaranteed 40 million plus match day revenue from securing CL.

If the club is being conservative it's strategic not that we lack the further capacity. I expect the stadium planning is the real issue.

We were skint last year and suddenly big money for Sesko came out of nowhere. We were willing to pay £80m for Fernandes.

All signs point to us being short of cash. I think the whole “fees too much” angle is just put out there to deflect from the fact that we’re a bit skint

Surely we then need to stop these vocal pursuits of players we can’t afford? It’s becoming a little embarrassing. Walking away from Scott because you were hoping for less than £64m? We are operating in our own delusion of a transfer market it seems. All of our pre-summer bravado seemingly was on the basis that we could get the best players for under 50m and 200k.

We have spent poorly, but I cannot see why we are disproportionately broke to almost every PL club. We have shed a lot of wages, we generate the most money. They are not ALL in the CL every season. To me, these owners are not fit for purpose on current viewing. We are operating on a completely different level from all of the clubs we claim we plan to best.

Aaand another one we miss out as we dont want to spend and improve
We have spent though. Granted not as much as the other clubs but these valuations are ridiculous! I'm all for spending wisely and finding bargains than joining the "100m club"

He hasn't, the market has. Chelsea just about breaking even on him, despite the market going crazy, shows how much he has stagnated.

So the only reason Chelsea aren't making a profit on Garnacho is because he was terrible last season?

We need good players, and more of it
"Good" doesn't need to be stupidly expensive. Which is where the market is now.

Edit: None of the 85m+ players this season are what I would consider world class so I can only imagine what the price would be in that case

Unsurprisingly, I read from Simon Mullock that we consider even the £64m Chelsea proposed for him as ‘excessive’. I have no idea why we are wasting our time with these pursuits, go to Netherlands, France or Norway and do your shopping if you want the best you can get for 30-50m.

We’re the only big club in England yet to land a £100m player, and tbh, we’d do well to spend £100m net this entire window from what I’m seeing.

Just go to France. Sangare and Camara are there for the taking

These seem so obvious yet we’ve not been linked to either of them. I hope we’re working on one of these behind the scenes similar to the Tielemans deal and it will come out of nowhere that we’ve reached an agreement.

One thing that's a bit strange is that they're not really linked to any club yet as far as I know. I really like both when I've watched them but surely there's a reason for this?

Gotta sell those season tickets!

Prior payments are catching up, we won’t see the difference until next season in terms of CL money and i suspect that the other poster was correct as well in regards to belt tightening because if stadium planning & associated costs.

Barcelonas Rashford pivot and Ugartes injury have robbed us of a big chunk of budget this year. Particularly Rashford whose wage which will bite the cashflow and affect what we can offer new recruits

Should they manage to find a buyer for Marcus I expect there may be a a late scramble for further recruits but imagine that will be pretty late in the window
But the idea we were going to get a significant fee for ugarte always felt fanciful, as was the idea barca would pay for rashford

Ugarte I think we were hoping for max 20 mill. And throughout the year Barca flip flopped, Flick really liked him and it was reported he wanted him to stay.

I don’t think either options were outside the realm of possibility.

I suspect you are right. It’s frustrating though as we could do with consistent progress as opposed to a step forward that is followed by stagnation or a step back. Getting to third in the table after seasons of 8th then 15th really needs to be followed aggressively this summer and I can’t help but see a subdued summer now as a missed opportunity.

This whole Ratcliffe/Ineos project is built on the basis of us getting back to challenging for the biggest trophies, supposedly by 2028. If they can't make it work financially to spend enough on players and build a stadium at the same time, then they should've never gotten involved and climbed in bed with the Glazers in the first place. Trying to do this on the cheap for no other reason than personal monetary gain, rather than actual sporting achievements would make them barely better owners than these Floridian leeches have been for last twenty years. It would just be more gross, pathetic greed and incompetence.

Well if we look at our transfer dealings this summer, we weren’t linked with any of them 2 days before signing them.

If anything it only shows how little trust we should put in those tweets. I see people talking about a transfer saga with Tchouameni because what, there have been tweets about him?

Back to Scott, he’s an okay/good PL midfielder with room to improve. Is he worth more than what Chelsea reportedly offered? I don’t think so. I don’t think he would make a difference in our CL games for instance, and that’s what you are ultimately looking for when buying players around the £80m mark

I don't see much difference between Mount vs Scott do be dissapointed in this transfer.

Mount will leave on a free though and Scott is a young player I guess - but for next season I don't think he's that important.

As I've said before, one obvious reason why United won't have made a move for them is that neither are quite United level. This was apparent even before Camara highlighted the fact with a stinking World Cup. I'll also remind people that Sangare was not seen as a priority prospect by the RB Group when Vivell was there.

Andrey Santos had a better season in Ligue 1 for Strasbourg at a younger age than either of them have had.

There's also a reason why when Newcastle went to France to sign a CM, they bought Aladji Bamba instead, who could well have a higher ceiling than both.

I suppose we have to be minded that they are not the majority shareholders so there will be a limited financial input from them when it’s not fully their club. (Especially when their business is going to shit)
The best thing anyone could do for this club is get that debt cleared and then the club could be truly self sustaining.

Yeah sort of seems like all this project 2028 stuff was even more ridiculous than it first seemed.

The other point is that if we can't invest properly it wouldn't be surprising to see us land outside of the cl next season and we are then back to square one

A few things have screwed us over a bit, rashford and ugarte.

Yea - I think we’re just trying to find value in the market which js no doubt a good thing. We’ve spent more than any other club since fergie retired with little to show for it - something needed to change and we’ve made 2 very decent signings for the same price as Fernandes

Confident we’ll make some more that represent good value - maybe when we’re in a position fighting for the league again we can spunk £100m on someone

It comes down to availability. A fit Mount is better than Scott by a mile. A fit Mount...

I see it as a massive missed opportunity. Carrick will be the longest tenured manager of our competitors, except Emery and Arteta. This is where you'll get the most bang for your buck. That's why spurs are happy paying the premium and Chelsea are aggressively investing. I do worry we'll stagnate or get left behind if not careful.

Scott is supposed to be a really great ball carrier through? Mount has never been a very good dribbler. He’s more pass and move and reliant on his team mates.

Before we then spent £48 million and £35 million on Santos and Tielemans

Did we also have a bit of money on top of what we were willing to pay for Fernandes? Probably. But I wont be surprised, if we do sign a 3rd midfielder this summer at all if its the least expensive of the 3

With how the window has developed, I have some scepticism as to whether we were willing to pay what reports suggested we were willing to pay for Fernandes tbh. We were willing to get to an 85m package according to reports, with 80m guaranteed. That looks like nothing, these guys in charge aren’t willing to pay anywhere near that for anyone this summer by the looks of things.

I agree. Also think the delay on a 3rd is so we can have a genuine look at Mount in that deeper role preseason.

64m seems like a relative bargain when you consider the prices this summer.
