I can afford £2.50 for a loaf of bread from the bakery, but I go for the supermarket own brand £1 loaf because it's better value and good enough, rather than not ever buying bread. Isn't that basic common sense to find value in the money we spend

There’s no way anyone was paying a fee for Ugarte, he’d have been a loan at best.
Even if someone did pay £20m, that would only have likely have meant breaking even in book value given he’s only been here 2 years.

I don't think he's what we need anyway, we need an expansive passer or a proper 6 destroyer. Instead of Santos would have made sense but not both of them.

Why not? If we’ve saved money by bringing rashford back for a season (and I don’t see that being a bad thing given I’m totally presuming there might be a respect from rashford towards Carrick given his history with us) , the money we’re saved could go towards Hall.
A Hall / Rashford left side, along with the new youth signing (Thompson) would really not be bad if we got a good season out of Rashford.
Saved money in one sense, took on 300k a week wages in another sense for someone who wasn't at the races for us for quite some time

I really think the club are being shrewd in letting the media think we are skint but I really don't buy into it at all. I believe we have set maximum prices we are willing to pay for players and Scott's valuation is seemingly higher than we think he is worth. It's less us not being able to afford him and more we don't think he's worth what is being demanded.
We have the expansive passer in Tielemans, ok not to a Kroos or Modric Level but still. However I agree we do need more of that destroyer type than this kind of profile now.
No. Thats what Chelsea have offered. Obviously Bournemouth turned it down and might go as far as asking the same as Fernandes. I think Fernandes was better last season but you never know, with the current English tax they might even get more for Scott than that.
We have two pretty fecking good passers in Santos and Tielemans. I think if either of them plays, our passing woes from deep are somewhat sorted.
The big thing missing is how to max Bruno + two out of Mainoo, Santos, Tielemans and whoever we sign.
Possibly right, and the same goes for Anderson / Fernandez etc. overinflated. But Anderson could also be their central Midfield kingpin for the next 7-10 years and they’d be laughing at the figure they spent as he’d be well worth it if they won another few leagues / CL
To a degree I’m happy we’ve taken this stance. The fees this season for very good players are a joke. And if Liverpool spent another £140m on a player etc and it backfired I’d be laughing and praising our new strategy
At the same time, at some point we will have to fork out that money for a player we think is elite - as our current strategy seems more Brighton-esq on a higher level than someone who will win the CL / Prem with their signings

Well take a look down our list of highest transfer fees paid. We should be quite happy that we haven't paid 100M going by that lot.
Money's Worth, you have to go down to Bruno Fernandes in 13th to find one, and apart from him there is only really Rio from 2002 that is a Definite. Mbeumo, Cunha, Santos still Pending obviously. Decent service from Matic, Maguire, Case and Fred, despite each being maybe double what we should have paid.

He’s on about 120k pw/6m a year, which FIFA are covering anyway as compensation for being injured atvthe World Cup, it’s hardly a deal breaker to getting another player in or not.
United fans needs to be realistic about the situation at the club right now. United, for what we got 3rd last season, in all honesty, is far away from the other top teams in the league such as Arsenal, Liverpool, City...etc. squad building wise. We have no choice but to pay for the reckless and bad spending we did for the last 10+ yrs. We have done some good job from last summer, and we will still have to do it for this and next probably 2 summers to finally raising the floor of the squad and rid of the not qualified ones before we can go and spend big big money on top top players to propel us to the tittle we want.
We ofcourse can spend big now and get in the mix for the top players but it's just not the wise or sensible way to use our finite resources. Spending on one big signing and makes do with others was the reasons that brought us in this predicament right now. Us fans have short memories, we were saying that we should build the squad wisely like Liverpool and Arsenal when we were splashing big money left, right, center. But now, when we try to do it wisely, fans start making noise that we are not a serious club if we are not singing big big players. Liverpool were not spending alot before they went and spend big last summer, Arsenal squad is pretty much complete as a project and they can go add cheery on the top to get that CL tittle, City the less said the better, Chelsea is just doing their things with selling and buying players every year for profits with their venture capitalist owners, Spurs are just trying to buy their way out of relegation because third times the charm?. We all can agree that the transfer fees has been crazy the last couple years and this year is even more so.

The objective of a transfer window is to make the team stronger. You can judge that against different benchmarks.
Are we stronger than we were a year ago? Honestly, I doubt it. Replacing Casemiro and his 10 goals is going to be extremely difficult.
The second, and more important, benchmark is the competition. If this transfer window was supposed to close the gap to Arsenal and City, I’d argue the exact opposite has happened. On paper, City, Chelsea and Spurs have all pulled further away from us.

A better analogy would be: a world renowned baker sold a £4 loaf at the Ritz. Hipster bakeries tried to do the same and started charging the same for their bread, using the same hype arguments than the one from the Ritz.
Since people in the area who already buy a £7 matcha follow the trend and buy the £4 loaf, more and more bakers charged the same fee but for a loaf of normal quality.
Little do you know, your local bakers start doing the same because, well, everybody is doing it. But the quality is nothing like the one from the chef of the ritz. It’s normal, average.
Now, you can find a loaf for half the price at Tesco. It’s a slightly lower to same quality as the ones from your local baker.
The Tesco loaf then holds greater value for money that the others.
