Have been playing Ultimate Team this year and currently have Cantona, Beckham and George Best in the squad. It got me thinking about who would wear number 7. This got me thinking about an all time United squad but you can only include 1 player for each squad number. Has to be the main squad number they wore. For instance, Rooney wore 8 for a while but he was predominantly number 10.

These I feel are fairly non-controversial but some may disagree:
1. Schmeichel
2. Neville
3. Irwin
4. Bruce
5. Ferdinand
6. Duncan Edwards
7. Cantona
8. ?
9. Charlton
10. Rooney
11. Best

13. Park

15. Vidic
16. Keane
18. Scholes

You could have Rooney at 8. Also Best wore no 8 for 40+ games, so could have him as 8, so Giggs can be 11?

Of course it’s a bit of a fudge, but Best wore 7,8,10,11 - wore no 9 just once.

Yes, including players pre official squad numbers makes it more complicated but I think it should be based on which number they wore most. I don't think Rooney or Best as 8 is in the spirit of the concept. 8 probably is the least iconic United squad number of the 1-11.

There are some tough decisions further down. RVP or Solskjaer as 20?

20 is easy. OGS
32 Tevez
8 Bruno?
Bruno is a good shout. I was thinking he would count as 18 but maybe he has now played more as an 8.

I think 20 is harder than you think. RVP had one of the greatest seasons ever by a United player and would be considered by most to be a better player than OGS. Ole an icon though so probably deserves it.

Tevez I consider a treacherous rat and would rather give the shirt to Victor Valdez or Mame Diouf

Thought the name tag would say… I like Cantona but you don’t get a mural and called Captain Marvel for nothing.

One was the finishing touch to a team, one (at times) WAS the team.
Hmm, his best was before my time if I'm honest but it is a worthy shout. 7 is surely the trickiest number to choose. Ronaldo, Beckham, Robson, Cantona, Best. Would be interested to see if many others would agree with you in ranking Robson ahead of that lot.

Best I could live with (though as others have said, wore a few shirts)… Cantona > Robson… nah :)

I might even go for #8 Paul Ince over Bruno. Ince is a clown, but as a midfielder for us he was very good.

Rooney at 8 is a better fit. I think 10 for us is a goalscorer - i.e. Law/RVN

From memory:

1. Peter Schmeichel
2. Gary Neville
3. Roger Byrne
4. Steve Bruce
5. Rio Ferdinand
6. Duncan Edwards
7. Bryan Robson (Eric Cantona/David Beckham honorable mentions)
8. Bruno Fernandes
9. Bobby Charlton
10. Lou Macari (Denis Law/Wayne Rooney/Dennis Viollet runners up)
11. George Best / Ryan Giggs terror twins
12. Phil Neville
13. Ji Sung Park
14. Andrej Kanchelskis
15. Nemanja Vidic
16. Roy Keane
17. Nani
18. Paul Scholes
19. Dwight Yorke
20. Ole Gunnar Solskjær (super sub: Robin Van Persie)
21. Henning Berg
22. John O’Shea
23. Luke O’Shaw
24. Darren Fletcher
25. Antonio Valencia

I won’t take higher numbers than that seriously. Now I’ll peek …

Very good. Macari at 10 is interesting. How good was he? Did you watch him live? I never saw him and haven't even seen many highlights maybe because he didn't play during a very successful period of the club.

I'd also be interested to know how good Denis Law was from someone who watched him live. Included in the trinity but probably the least celebrated of the three?

:D

Lou Macari was my favourite player as a kid! Bit of a fan favourite too, Scottish terrier with inconsistent touches of silky skill and a knack for popping up for crucial goals. Was a stalwart in the team that under Tommy Docherty won the second division in 1974 and put smiles back on the faces in Manchester. Protagonist of several terrace classics like ‘Skip-to-my Lou Macari’ and ‘Who put the ball in the Scousers’ net?’.

Bit of a subjective choice there, reckon most would have Law or Rooney …

Both full backs. How good are/were they to pick ahead of Irwin? Thank my upbringing and the old fella’s insistence.
Johnny Carey and Gary Neville must compete for shirt number 2.

Denis Irwin, my favorite left back to watch in my lifetime slightly ahead of Patrice Evra, used to play with no 3, and must compete with legendary captain of The Busby Babes (and England) Roger Byrne. He edges it for me on hearsay alone!

Best is hard so I’ll go for the worst players. Probably as many contenders for the number 7 as the best team, which is depressing! Was tempted to put Hojlund at 11 too, how did someone so poor get not one by two iconic numbers?

1. Bayindir
2. Lindelof
3. Bailly
4. Amrabat
5. Rojo
6. Blanc
7. Sanchez (Depay, Di Maria, Owen)
8. Anderson
9. Hojlund
10. Rashford
11. Zirkzee (Januzaj)
12. Bellion
13. Grant
14. Goram
15. Reguilon
16. Casper
17. Miller
18. Davies
19. Djemba x2
20. Dalot
21. Antony
22. Powell
23. Clegg
24. Onana
25. Sancho
26. Obertan
27. Weghorst
28. Schneiderlin

30. De Laet

32. Valdes

34. Van de Beek

No.14 will always be the Jordi Cruyff number to me, which is fitting since his dad is synonymous with it.

Hahaha, lot of time for this. Some harsh ones in there though. Surely we've had worse 10's than Rashford

The only alternative for 10 was Zlatan but my memory was we signed him for another year after Lukaku was given the no 9 and then I think he got injured so not sure he ever really played in that number. Other than that our 10s have been solid and only 8 players have worn it in 34 years., Hughes, Beckham, Sheringham, RVN, Rooney, Zlatan, Rashford, Cunha.
