Strange time to start him, as Onana needs all the confidence he can get before Lyon. Although this might give him the confidence that he's a bit better at least

Wonder if this was a bit of a statement to the board about the need to get a new keeper.

No one is worse than Onana let’s not forget this .

We were about to face one of the leagues in form sides away from home with key players rested. I think today was the perfect day to give him a break

I get that with the outfield players but not the goal keeper. Why do you ever need to rest a keeper and how doesnt it make the keeper feel like he's been dropped after THAT performance, which can only affect confidence. Hopefully, it was already agreed prior to the Lyon game that he was being rested today.

Hard to judge a keeper who dont play at all. He;s bad with his feet, maybe okay shotstopper, but definitely a a risk on its own to play him against Lyon.

Any keeper we put against them will be under immense pressure. They will definitely use it and press us hard

Keep playing Altay...you can't just give him one game after injury and bring back Onana whose had 2 seasons to show us he's total shit.

I know Onana isn’t good enough. I’m not sure about bayindir yet.

I hate to jump on this kid but who decided that Kovar wasn't it and we needed this fella instead? Honestly.

It's one game with massive pressure on him against an in form Newcastle who are at home playing against a weakened United team..

Yes he wasn't brilliant and that mistake was a howler, but he looked a better keeper than Onana despite all the mitigating circumstances above.

If i was convinced he wouldnt shite himself I'd still put him in against Lyon. Tell him to keep it safe and simple and not mess about with the kicks. Christ, have a defender take them if necessary.

It's not much of an improvement but I feel he'll cost us fewer goals than Onana.. just about.

Again, exceptional recruitment on the part of Murtough, Arnold and Ten Hag. They signed Onana, who to be fair wasn't nearly as shite as he is now for Inter, but was nonetheless recognised to have an error in him.

Then, rather than signing a back-up keeper who is solid if unspectacular to make up for Onana's error-proneness, they signed another keeper who has the exact same issue. Fecking fantastic work again lads.

Going straight back to Onana because Bayindir made one mistake seems illogical to me. Onana consistently makes very poor mistakes and costs us points every week. Why is it ok for him to get more games?

Pretty sure at the time Bayindir was a stupid signing, anyone that watched him said he was terrible with his feet yet we signed him

From De Gea/Romero/Henderson to Onana/Bayandir/Heaton

Absolutely incredible levels of ineptitude.

I knew he wasn't good enough after he let that one in from a corner a few months ago. Amateur level stuff even if Onana did the exact same thing a week later. We give him another chance today, another error.

Onana has ability in there but he's got a broken mentality. Has Altay even got the ability? Doubtful.

His 27th birthday is tomorrow, bit odd to call him a kid, no?

The biggest problem, for me personally, was communication with defense and command of area.

Yeah we saw that from the very first minute where he had that mix up with Lindelof. His distribution was actually ok in the first half but once Newcastle started aggressively pressing high it was game over for him.

He’s come in today, having hardly played any first team games and under some pressure, with Onana being heavily under the spotlight.
Not only that, he had a makeshift defence in front of him, with Lindelof (say no more) and a young teenager making his first team debut (Amass).
Not the best circumstances to be making your first appearance for a couple of months.
He made the one mistake, which ultimately didn’t have any bearing on the the end result, other than boosting the embarrassing score line.

Sure we need a new keeper, but cut the lad some slack.
I’d rather he kept the shirt for the rest of this season, rather than risk playing Onana any further.

And probably spending 40 on net.
Remember when we couldn't register Romero and we yet wouldn't sell to a rival? Or when we wouldn't sell Henderson and waited for his value to tank? Glazers were amazing.

He is obviously not good enough to be our no.1 but I would still start him over Onana to send a message.

Lets be honest, he seems like a good guy, but even in his good games he's made mistakes. I really think we need a new keeper, but genuinely feel more anxious with Altay in than Onana. We should move both on in the summer.

Id nearly go with him on thursday.

We need a new GK pronto in the summer.

Goalkeeping coach probably sweating bullets right now. Not a single serviceable keeper at the club. Someone's got to take the blame.

Not a chance. He was solid in the previous appearances. One bad mistake following a long injury lay off won't change that. Onana on the other hand will be singularly responsible if we don't make the CL.

That's definitely not true.

He made many passing mistakes, only one of them got punished, his passing simply doesn’t cut it at this level. Play him from start against Lyon and we will barely manage to keep the ball…. However Onana may very well find other ways to feck it up for us.

I think Ruben was just making a statement that benching Onana isn't an option now.
This is just nonsense. But even if this were the case, you are basically saying our manager is willfully fecking us over to "send a message," when all he needs to do is arrange a bloody meeting.

If we don't advance, the first leg will have been pivotal. Onana was clearly at fault for both goals conceded - otherwise he wouldn't have been dropped.
If we don’t advance, the 2nd leg will be pivotal, as the 1st ended in a draw.

Onana bungled the 1st and he has to go in the summer, but we are cooked regardless if we can qualify at home from a draw.

Or rather because it didn't end in a win due to Onana's 2nd mistake of the day. Either way, he shouldn't ever play for the club again in any match that matters in terms of a cup or CL qualification.

If we can't win the home leg then unless he's fully responsible then it can't all be on him.
We've been poor all season in the league meaning we can't reach the champions league that way. Putting it all on him removes a lot of blame for really poor performances from the whole team this season.

Low standards and all but massive mistake aside, he was actually alright, which is basically already better than current Onana.

I wouldn't be annoyed if he started against Lyon but you just know the footballing gods won't let him have a drama free game.

Two pen saves against Arsenal didn't suddenly make him better than the average-at-best goalkeeper we saw before it and today showed that.

Even if you believe that last sentence to be true, that doesn't really have any relevance to the discussion of which one is the better keeper.

Bayindir has looked pretty ropey in most of his first team appearances - the Arsenal game was the exception. Even in that one, he made a mistake for their goal.

He's awful at his distribution and gifted a goal with his poor kicking but his saves were good, much better than Onana.

Id start him on Thursday as I don't think Onana is capable of not gifting a goal on an European cup.

Just don't ask Bayindir to play with his feet and we should be fine.
