He was, and continued starting for the first month of the season. However all it took was his form dropping a little and he was instantly back to the bench despite the players replacing him being no better (if not worse). He only got 36 minutes in the last four PL games under ETH.

As I've said before, Amad under ETH was in a similar position to Martial under Mourinho. Both players had to be performing far, far better than the players they were competing with to remain in the team, as it felt like the manager was basically looking for an excuse to drop them. Meanwhile the players they were competing with could get away with stinker after stinker and keep getting chances.

In fairness, ETH even fell completely out of love for Antony after that first season.
Absolutely adored the madness that was Garna and Rashford.

Would he be world class or close to it if he was managed by Fergie instead of those useless twats ETH and Amorim?

He's coming into his prime, and he's showing that he has everything it takes to excel at the top level. I pray that we sort our shit out and give him a chance to do that over the next few years.

Mbeumo might have to convert into a LW/F9 hybrid similar to what Mane did when Salah took his place. Amad’s intensity, pressing, 1v1 ability and drive on the ball is too important. He needs to start RW every game.

Him and Bruno playing so deep was half the issues. We need to unleash such players rather than hold them back.

100%. Anyone with a brain could see they're better further up

There’s a bloke in the Amorim thread trying to convince everyone that Amad was a true attacker in Amorim’s system also, despite spending half his time defending at full back.

Boggles the mind.

I really do think we have a proper talented group of attackers now that will fight and push each other for a starting spot, and defensively we have Martinez, Maz, De Ligt, Maguire, Shaw, Yoro, Heaven, Dalot. That’s a decent group of defenders.

If we can get Mainoo firing we have the makings of a verg good side.

Yes that's my recollection of what happened. He started the season under Ten Hag, but as soon as he had a few quiet games, he was benched for Antony. It was clear Ten Hag didn't rate him.

I remember this because in one of Ruud's first game as interim we beat Paok Salonika 2-0 with Amad scoring both goals, and I started a thread asking why can us "clueless" fans see a player is world class when an experienced manager like Ten Hag wanted to bin him off!

It actually suited Bruno to polish his game a bit. He's too much of a hollywood ball player too often, and the game against Brighton he had a shocker, only to have a best game in our shirt probably ever. We need more consistency, but playing on a counter, he will excel with his passing and vision in the final third.

Great assist btw. Took the ball well forward didn't panic, sold the pass to his right and played Mbeumo on just in the right time.

As for Amad he had to defend as much as before WB is practically a wide forward, people get too much attached to formations. He tore city from WB too.

So so good but on top, his work rate and defending make him a very complete winger. Soon world class

I was a bit annoyed with him in the first half tbh. He drifted offside a few times when there was zero need to be and he would have been clean through - not only on the disallowed goal, where he had acres of space but was too eager to make the run and ended up a toe-nail off.

Didn't cost United in the end, but had he timed his runs more sensibly it could have made the game even easier.

It was great, just great to see him playing as a forward. Look at the difference, it is his natural game. Amad was never a wing-back.

You want this player running towards the opposing goal. Not running back towards ours as a defender.

He looked dangerous every single time he received the ball today, which is how it should be for wide/wingers players at Manchester United.

He’s also the best in the entire team at pressing high, hence Amorim ensured he played much further back.

Honestly, that man was a moron.

Excellent performance, brilliant going forward, workrate, defensively did a super job picking up that position inside Dalot to block Doku if he cut inside.

Good to have him back.

The best thing I can say is that perhaps it might help him having had some focus on the defensive side of the game.

But, yes, shoehorning Amam into his ridiculous formation was a waste of talent. It’s to Amad’s credit that he made the most of it.

I can't believe people thought he should ride the bench after afcon. Was an absolute menace.

His heatmap today really wasn't very different from his games at wingback. Obviously less heat in general, given how comparatively little we saw of the ball, but like Dorgu on the opposite side he's got great fitness and work rate which was vital today given how much they both needed to get up and down the pitch supporting the fullbacks while also attacking. Unlucky not to score, thought he was excellent today.

He's got a lovely balance of being very accomplished technically but also being full of energy. We've had a lot of players with 1 of the 2 but very few with both. Tremendous performance and a reminder that despite the many issues with this squad and glaring gaps that we do have attacking quality (especially when half of them aren't playing as wingbacks and defensive midfielders) who can help us win a decent number of games.

He has this ability to somehow always look like he's half a yard too slow, only to magically end up half a yard ahead instead. And then you think he's gonna get knocked over because how could he not, being so tiny? But then he kind of out-muscles the defender despite being half his size!

So lucky to have him. Best bit of scouting post Fergie.

He is a joy!

I've been evaluating managerial candidates based partly on how they could fit both him and Mbuemo in the squad. They're the safest "probably going to be top 4 quality starting Prem Player for the next 5 years" guys in the squad. Not old, done it before, no obvious giant flaws to be skeptical about.

Its a little disappointing to realize that he came out of that game without a goal or assist.

Sir Jim, welcome to the Caf!

He is genuinely a quality player and is only 23, he can be even better, right now one of the best RWs in the league.

Just don’t rad the AFCON thread.

Having Mbuemo and Amad in the squad was “gross mismanagement” according to some.

Jim’s been utterly wank man, he’s good at cutting costs is the best appraisal I can give him.
Absolutely catastrophic appointments of Ashworth and then Amorim, compounded by then keeping Amorim for 14 embarrassing months, costing us even CL qualification (dumb economics).
I agree but I was more alluding to the set of defenders you named being a good bunch.

Realistically and putting aside the result yesterday, its quite an average set of defenders, especially if we want to progress to PL contenders and mainstay in the CL.

Heaven has been good but has only just started coming into the team after spending 1/3 of the season on the fringes.

Yoro has been poor this season, seems to not be learning from his mistakes and allowing his man onto the inside into the space between Yoro and the next CB.

Maguire for me is still our best CB, not just in his positioning and tackling but his best attribute is how he structures the defence. This season and last, injuries have started to creep in and hes been injured for a while this season. Id still offer him a 1+1 year deal.

Martinez has been the same with injuries as Maguire. Our best ball playing CB and his positioning is more often than not, solid.

De Ligt has been our best CB this season but seems to have vanished, considering he was only supposed to miss one match.

Mazraoui is solid enough and has been a bargain for what we paid. Unsure how he'll fare going back to RB.

Shaw has probably had one of his most consistent seasons with United in terms of being available and Amorim alluded to this being down to shifting to CB and being less aggressive with the amount of distance he has to cover. Hes had a steady season I'd say. Also has history with injuries.

Dalot is technically poor, to say the least. The two things that he is consistent with is being available to play and his pace, which is a good asset. But on the ball, hes very, very poor for the level we need to be at.

The issue we've had is having an unsettled back 4/5, often chopping and changing due to injuries to Martinez, Maguire and de Ligt. We cant progress as a team whilst having injury issues at the back.

I think this summer we need at least a LB and a CB.

I would also be inclined to let go of Shaw and a CB.

What a player this guy is. If we have 11 Amads on the pitch, we would win every damn game :). His commitment, attitude, tenacity, dribbling, ability on the ball and even his tracking back to defend are all top class. He defines what a United player should be. With a better fullback alongside him he will be unstoppable.

You’ve called them average, then called Martinez solid, De Ligt our best defender this season, Maz solid, Shaw steady and Heaven good. And Maguire our best defender.

I obviously completely disagree it’s an average bunch, De Ligt is a superb defender. Martinez top drawer when proper fit. Maguire solid and reliable.
Maz an excellent full back.
A fit Shaw at full back still a very good player even if he too often plays within himself.

Heaven and Yoro have absolutely heaps of potential.

Not a chance with that group that we buy a CB this summer. Martinez and De Ligt likely first choice, with Yoro and Heaven allowed to develop.

Maguire is very good when we are playing defensive and close to our own goal.

Once we play more expensive and have more space then he's one of our worst.

Yep and those backing Ten Hag kept saying how Amad got his chances and fumbled them. Many called for him to be sold as he wasn't that good.

I said the same would happen with Mainoo and Amorim once he started to turn people on Mainoo and Garnacho. We saw it starting to happen but luckily we put an end to Amorim now.

There are some similarities, but there are also differences. Mainoo actually did get plenty of chances last season as he started almost all the league games he was fit for (albeit he got moved between a couple of different positions). He just continued to perform poorly, and as such he was the most obvious player to lose his spot since the players he was competing with were performing comfortably better. The starting players anyway; I do think he should have been coming off the bench more than he did and got some of the minutes that Ugarte did. So Mainoo has to take a decent amount of the blame himself, as opposed to Amad who was clearly being treated unfairly.

True and I agree with this. Amad talents could be seen a mile off even when he joined the club. The way he dribbles with the ball twisting and turning at speed. It’s hard to defend against as his dribbling is good. Some rated Garnacho better than him which was laughable.

Amad is our biggest talent in the squad easily.
