Still only 23 and he should be a squad player, in my opinion. But a starter? Not a chance.
Yeah that's a fair assessment. He can still imporve but don't think he is a starter material. Good squad player though.Still only 23 and he should be a squad player, in my opinion. But a starter? Not a chance.
Because he is a young player and has already shown a much higher level than this. It's not like this is his best. He had 14 goal contributions in 20 starts last season in the league.Lowering standards for young players because we think that’s following in the club tradition will never stop being mad to me. If someone accepts he isn’t good enough now why are we talking about keeping him in the squad or giving him goal contribution targets for next season?
Someone at the club might believe his last season was decent enough to build on. But yeah, he needs to earn that game time by impressing when he comes on a sub. If they are anything like today, he's toast. The issue I have with that is no serious club rewards someone “nowhere near good enough” with game time to even make the hope of 20 goal contributions possible.
Every player not good enough for us seems to have great goal contributions. Maybe him and Rashford can rack up goal contributions between them as one gives the ball away the other refuses to defend and we can win the goal contributions league by losing every match 3-4.Because he is a young player and has already shown a much higher level than this. He was one of our best players last season, and we can't just sell every player not good enough to be a starter and replace them with starter players. That's not how it works.Every player not good enough for us seems to have great goal contributions. Maybe him and Rashford can rack up goal contributions between them as one gives the ball away the other refuses to defend and we can win the goal contributions league by losing every match 3-4.
Very bad. It was Szobozlai, not prime Mane or Salah running at them. Awful stuffI said it in the match day thread, it was a big feck up, but I am way more disappointed in how shit the defence was.
Decent backup but would sell him if we get a decent offer and Lacey is ready to be the backup.Agreed.
But is he not a decent back-up for a title chasing team? if not he has to be sold then. Too bad Shea Lacey is injury-prone and has off field problems too.
And it wasn't full pelt, he turned Maguire inside out with a small feint and then rolled it through Dalots (I think) legs. There was so much more to do and as a team, we failed.Very bad. It was Szobozlai, not prime Mane or Salah running at them. Awful stuff
Salah would have been in every competition no? Don't think that excuse is valid for them 2 when we've played 1 game a week for basically the whole season. We saw this with Salah for years in the PL post AFCON. Him and Mbeumo are both exhausted. That has to factor into planning with both players.

I hate how reactionary our fanbase is. At a certain point he was our best player and he showed the tremendous qualities he can bring to the team. He's having an off season and his confidence took a huge hit. It happens, as it happened to even more established senior players in more functional teams. We just take it on the chin and go again for next season. Then we sell him if he repeats that season
Way too many mitigating factors to put it down to just AFCON being the reason he had a drop from damn near WC levels of output from Salah but if that is true then what will next year be like from them two? We'll be travelling a lot next season and the games will have a lot of pressure. The combination of that could easily affect their fitness. Salah was poor post-AFCON most seasons he participated in it.
A typical example in 21/22 when he was at his peak as a player…
It’s a lot of travel mid season, a lot of time away from teammates and some massive games with a lot of pressure. The fact they have both looked so much worse after the tournament is unlikely to be a coincidence.
- Before AFCON: 23 goals and 10 assists in 26 matches.
- After AFCON: 7 goals and 6 assists in 25 matches, with a goal-per-game rate dropping from over 0.88 to roughly 0.33.
Not much (any?) mention of the team becoming extremely reluctant to pass to him. That’s a really, really bad sign. If your teammates lose faith in you, you’re on a tough road to win back their confidence.
Today it was evident. Whether it was to save him from himself or distrust is something that'll reveal itself in the upcoming games.Hmm. I haven't really thought of that myself. Do we have anything substantial to draw this from, or is it just an impression of sorts.
He does seem at rock bottom confidence wise though, and that will likely affect team mates decisions too I guess, consciously or not
Has he ever been really good and a serious threat? He was better under Amorim but still quite an average player.Error aside, absolutely dreadful form continues
Overhyped a bit admittedly but he’s not been in bad form like this beforeHas he ever been really good and a serious threat? He was better under Amorim but still quite an average player.
