There's some ridiculous stretching going on in here trying to assign blame to him for the goal. He was unlucky with a hilariously unlikely sequence of bounces that formed a fluke goal, enabled by poor defending and careless midfield play.

He isn't good enough for us, that's undoubtedly true, but tonight wasn't his fault at all.

Why does he dive backwards he could have just taken a step towards where the ball was going instead of the stupid slow motion leap
Because his technique is appalling. Watch the footage of the goal closely. His feet are moving all over the place, yet he somehow covers zero ground in the process. Then just flops backwards into the net. He's also the only keeper I've ever seen who seems to get shorter when he dives than when he's just standing there.

Some people will defend him again tonight because it's not a glaring error where he's thrown the ball into his own net or something, but it's just yet another one of those moments where you simply just know a top class keeper would have saved it. You can imagine Donnarumma flying across the goal and tipping it wide and everybody wondering how the hell he got there. You just don't get those moments with Onana. He does the bare minimum when he's not making outright mistakes.

The stats from the 3 x European Finals he's played in:

Lost all 3
Faced 9 shots on target, conceded 4 goals

The teams he has represented in those 3 x European Finals (Ajax, Inter Milan, and Man Utd) failed to score a goal in those Finals... is that anything to do with Onana? Whether it is or not he's currently a bad omen to have in the team for a European Final!

Finals rarely produce many goals… It certainly wasn’t his fault Lukaku missed Inter’s biggest chance and saved a header from his teammate Dimarco… Actually Onana was part of the build up play that helped Inter get out of City’s intense pressing and create chances…

Thus being said we should expect a lot better from a 50M goalkeeper and he didn’t provide that tonight.

Maybe it wasn't his fault, but it seems like his basic technique when he dives is bad.
Today again he looked very clumsy on the goal.

Not much he could do about the goal.

Bruno, Mazraoui, Maguire and Shaw should all have done better.

Need to get rid but that goal was not on him...

He wasn’t at fault for the goal, for me, but he was caught out a couple of times in the first half. He’s not great. I wouldn’t be in here complaining if he’s an academy prospect or a cheap punt, but the delta between expected performance for the transfer fee and actual performance is way too wide.

I'm his biggest critic bit don't blame him for that goal. It was super jammy.

He did nothing wrong tonight, its not his fault Luke Shaw put it in his own net

Go watch the view from behind the goal in good quality.

Onana yet again gets a hand to it but can't keep it out. We know Onana has the slowest reactions and worst instincts of any keeper you'll ever see at this level. Which suggests to me if the keeper with the slowest reactions and instincts can get a hand to it, a competent keeper can keep that out.

I mean, the ball bounces off Shaw and bounces to Onana's right. After Shaw deflects the ball to Onana's right, Onana decides to take a step, to his left. I am not making this up. He decides it's a good idea to take a step in the opposite direction the ball is travelling. And then he's just incredibly slow to get down to the ball. Despite all this, he gets a hand to it. It is definitely saveable.

Onana is a master at conceding "should probably do better" type goals, whilst having plausible deniability that it wasn't really a howler because it's all speculation whether it should be saved or not.

We don't have the cash to replace him, so dream on some of you. God the way Dean Henderson was treated here was a disgrace in hindsight, as was the decision to sell him. Another one of the club's many cock-ups that have left us in this rock bottom position.

Needs to go. He had 5-10 minutes in the firat half where he was all over the place and they could have scored several. Been patient with him but his over all season was crap.

Didn’t watch the game (nerves).

Will never watch the highlights.

Don’t care how he did.

HE IS A LOSER

I've said exactly the same thing in here. I'll try and find my post.

I'm just watching MOTD and I've paused it when he dives. Just before he dives he moves his left leg to the right so just like I said in my other posts he doesn't actually get any closer to the ball than if he just fell over where he was and it looks like the kid in my other post.
He more or less jumps up in the air ( not dive to the left) and lands. That's why he's not a good shot stopper. He doesn't dive. He just goes up and down in the same spot or actually further right because where he's supposed to be launching the dive from his left foot he moves it in the wrong direction.
Pause it before he jumps and he's not far off the centre of the goal and see where he lands. Basically where he started from if he'd just jumped up and stretched his body out. He doesn't get closer to the ball.
He should be stepping left with his right foot and not stepping right with his left.

Edit: Now watch where their goalie starts from and ends up with the JZ shot just after

Yeah instead of taking a step away from where the ball is going like he does.

I've said exactly the same thing in here. I'll try and find my post.
His instincts, technique, reactions, are just weird. I'm actually shocked you can be a professional goalkeeper with such atrocious fundamentals.

I was gobsmacked when I watched that motd I mentioned. He dived but stayed in the same spot and they scored obviously and we then had a shot from JZ and their goalie ended up outside of the goal posts and obviously saved it.
When you watch them both back to back I think he must be an actor trying to do what he thinks he should because it doesn't look like he has any natural talent or instinct. I mean if you're first instinct is to get further away from the ball you have serious problems.

looking for new GK in summer is must.

once we wrapped Cunha and ST, we need new GK seriously.

Beyond the direct impact he's had, it's clear his defence has so little confidence in him that their own games are being affected.

Tom Heaton being our best goalkeeper in 2025 is perhaps not entirely ideal.

He’s an absolutely tragic keeper. He really doesn’t do anything well. No matter who we play, he almost always finds a way to cost us goals. He doesn’t command his area. He’s not agile. His fundamental skills are poor. His positioning is weak. He constantly parries shots back into danger. He makes a huge number of errors leading directly to goals. It’s clear that he makes the defenders in front of him very nervous. It negatively impacts the way the whole team plays. He must be replaced this summer if we’re to improve next year.

Replace Onana must be your priority. You can't play without keeper.

Another ETH signing that is killing us. How our scouts or recruitment team signed off on him is beyond me. As you note, he is lacking in all basic skill areas. Defenders clearly expect him to come for balls and he is nowhere. Just astonishing.

Another player last night's performance was curtains for his United career. As a great man once said - it's time to go.

The only thing he had to do all night and he wasn't up to it. You can't rely on him. Has to be replaced this summer, just has to.

Why does he dive backwards he could have just taken a step towards where the ball was going instead of the stupid slow motion leap
THIS - He makes a step in the wrong direction so he can "leap" at a slow bobbling ball.

He could literally have taken a step in the right direction and caught the ball.

This wasn't a high speed deflection that caught him out.

Again we are asking ourselves if this was a deliberate mistake or just a massive feck up where he tries to make a save look more impressive than it needs to be.

Either way, hopefully it's the last payday Onana gets from wearing the shirt.

It will probably come out one day hes been betting against us.

SeeIt will probably come out one day hes been betting against us.
Oh cmon. This is a new low! Let’s see it will come out one day that Shaw, Bruno, Casimero have been betting against us too?

This happens every fecking week, though. It's shit positioning and shit movement

Anyone putting that goal on him is absolutely crazy. That said, he needs to go but I suspect he'll still be here for at least another season. We have far too many competing priorities and losing last night means less money to address them.
The standard of goalkeeping in world football is shocking and whilst hes been shite, there hasn't been many that haven't been.
We watched Henderson last weekend but let's not have amnesia, he was always injured and equally made some mistakes.
Scoring goals hides your shit elsewhere, that needs to be our focus....

The goal was a bit unlucky for him but his reaction is so poor and he doesn't seem to dive correctly for saves. He's a poor keeper and we won't be getting up to much with him starting.

Need to move him on / get a new keeper in the summer if we plan on improving anytime soon

For anyone who doesn't think he's at fault for the goal last night, here are three undisputed facts about Onana

1. He has absolutely terrible reaction times
2. He struggles getting down quickly/saving low shots
3. Even when he gets a hand to things he often doesn't keep it out.

When you consider these facts, plus the fact that he also took a step away from the where the ball was going... it's pretty obvious that a better goalkeeper could well have saved it.

Those might be true but not applicable to that goal. If people want to use their hatred for this shit keeper to convince themselves it was his fault, fine but it wasn't.

How are they not applicable to the goal? It is a low, he doesn't react quickly, and he does get a hand to it.... and he definitely does take a step in the wrong direction AFTER the deflection takes place.

He looked like a rabbit in the headlights from the very first minute - that is the exact opposite of what you need from a United keeper.

He just isn't it - acknowledge the mistake and move on as quickly as possible.

De Gea gets that ball away from goal. Whilst it wasn't 100% his fault there's always more he could do. He needs replacing or we're facing a similar season next season.

The step is the reason he's able to get a hand to it, he's shifting his bodyweight before that and is going to be able to properly diving in the opposite direction.
It's okay not to like him, but we don't need to blame him for every goal we concede.

Forget last night and if he could or couldn’t save it, he’s an abomination of a keeper, a certified disaster and needs binning off as soon as possible.

Was watching the Arsenal Newcastle game over the weekend where David Raya was making point blank saves for fun yet here we are with a clown in goal who can't even dive in time to prevent a ball moving in slow mo from entering the net.
