De Gea wasn't good for at least 5 years before leaving Man Utd. He should have been sold at least a couple of years before 2023.Keeping De Gea for two more seasons would provide us with better goalkeeping at no extra cost, as opposed to the 40m or so we spent on Onana. Since Ferguson retired a consistent trait of United was letting go for cheap/free players that can be still utilized and bringing in WORSE players for huge money. Essentially we've spent 40m to get worse goalkeeping than we had. If we kept De Gea, it's possible we get Champions League in 23/24. Usually, the busier De Gea was the better his performances and we were letting massive amount of shots on that season. In any way those 40m could have been spent to get a better striker than hojlund. And yeah, if we got a good goalkeeper instead of Onana, nobody would be talking about De Gea, but we didn't. Our recruitment department should have said Onana is worse than what we have, so let's look elsewhere, or let's keep it as it is.
But the worst thing is not that we had one better goalkeeper thant Onana. We had TWO. We also had Dean Henderson. We could have kept him as an interim solution until an opportunity for a world class goalkeeper appears.
Asset management has been nothing but a disaster in the last dozen years.
He was also on monstrously high wages and he simply wasn't delivering for Man Utd. He had to go but we got a wrong replacement for him.
