André Onana | Loaned to Trabzonspor

Think we're stuck with him until his contract runs out unfortunately.

No one in their right mind will have watched him play and think 'yeah he looks a safe pair of hands, let's splash the cash'.

Rubbish. This rewriting of history as a result of the hipsters' pick not working out needs to stop. He was not 'abysmal', give your head a wobble.
De Gea needed replacing, he'd been getting steadily worse since the 2018 world cup. We'd all had enough by 2023. What we shouldn't have done, is spend 50m to replace him with someone much worse.

The issue stems from the fact that Onana has lowered goal keeping standards to such a degree that we now see De Gea as a goalkeeping great. He had a few good seasons, but those last two...

My hope is that some club will be in for him as he possibly has a decent reputation around Europe, as he was Ajax and Inter GK. Plus there's Saudi Arabia though unlike other clubs we don't get offers from there it seems (unless it's Bruno).

I've said earlier in this thread I agreed that he needed replacing. But we had more pressing needs and should have spent the money elsewhere, then replaced him further down the line. We just compounded that error by spending 50m on one of the worst keepers I have seen represent united.

De Gea was great for us. His powers were on the wane but his performances those last two seasons get more exaggerated the more his detractors egg each other on. He won the golden gloves FFS...he clearly wasn't THAT bad.

That is way more than harsh. We would kill to have that version of him now.

De Gea had some sensational seasons with us, and was being talked about in the "best in the world" category by many pundits and was widely accepted through the land.

Then he had an absolutely shocking world cup, and seemed to absolutely kill his confidence and he had some absolutely horrendous error laden seasons, that would be a decent comparison with Onana's whole spell here.

Abysmal overall - silly talk.
Abysmal season or 2 - very much so.

Throw in the sweeping trend of keepers needing to be able to play it, and the inevitable happened.

Except we've seen next to no evidence Onana is particularly good at playing it, but has made as many mistakes as trough level De Gea did.

I started to wonder what on earth we'd signed in one of his first games, home to Forest where some striker tore through one on one, and Onana sort of just shrunk and sat on the floor backwards leaving the striker the easier tap in ever.

Disagree. He was never abysmal. He became more error prone but he was never abysmal, regardless of what season you look at for us. And certainly not ever comparable to Onana (seems mental this even needs saying). Onana isnt very agile, terrible saving with his feet, poor distribution, awful on crosses and high balls, and poor one on one. He's not good at a single goalkeeping prerequisite. I swear the more distance we get from those two subpar de gea seasons, the worse they become in some people's minds.

He made huge amounts of errors in one season. I genuinely think you must have forgotten. There's whole youtube clips out there lasting numerous minutes!

I can sort of agree that De Gea was abysmal for a couple of seasons (mainly 2019-2021), but certainly not in his last two seasons. He made some big mistakes in his last season, but overall he was actually solid.

I'm not even sure we'd have spent it wisely even if we allocated the Onana money elsewhere tbh. Our recruitment generally has been fecking awful, but that summer stands out. We signed 3 players that summer in Onana, Mount and Hojlund for around £165m. Two of them made us worse, and the other has only just started playing for us 2 years on. We didn't just stagnate that summer, we went backwards, when we really needed to kick on after finishing 3rd. Proper dark times looking back.

Question - why do we always ask players to find their new clubs ? Should we not be also looking for clubs to sell out players to?

Or did we cut so many people that we don’t really have any transfer people left ?

He had 29 goals in 43 for Al-Hilal last season and he looked very good at the Club World Cup where he scored 4 in 5. They have 12 foreign players with a 10 limit so guys like Leonardo and Lodi can't be registered and Mitrović had to be bought out, if not for the limit he'd certainly be on the list and most likely starting. I doubt Leonardo or Lodi will accept to sit out the season and hope for a roster spot to open next summer.
Interesting. So he either gets a loan somewhere or bought out? I'd certainly have him here as an option, though I've no idea what wages he's getting over there.

I think it was reported at €5M/year, of course net since it's Saudi Arabia but most players who leave SA accept lower wages since they know why they went there in the first place. He had a loan move to São Paulo that fell through before the brazilian window closed so he's definitely on his way out. He'd definitely be someone I'd monitor if I'm Utd, same with Otávio who's in the same situation.

How did we end up paying 50m for this guy? He's been doing this shit since his Ajax days

Horrific video.
Probably fair to say ETH was our worst manager in the modern era. Literally took club for cleaners with his transfers.

Never compare Onana to, De Gea. It's embarrassing. Onana should have been one of the first players out the door this summer. Such a crucial position in any team that's had success. I can't see him playing for us again unless we have injuries.

yep, he should have been out the door Jan of his debut season. Utter clown boat.

I think after around October he won't get many minutes.

I think it's telling that Bayindir is playing EPL games it's nothing to do with injuries.

It's also telling that the new contract request was leaked.

The board will start to force him out IMO. I expect if Lammens is bedded in then in January we will listen to offers for Onana.

Onana has nothing to do with this, so I’m not sure why you’re getting so defensive with the hipster remarks.

De Gea was practically throwing the ball into his own net, constantly kicking the ball out of play or into the path of opposition attackers, letting balls go under him, and still had the same weaknesses from corners that he’d had his whole career.

His mistakes were the reason we were pedalled out of the Europa League against Sevilla during his final year.

There had been huge discussion and debate about De Ge’s form for at least two years (the penalty shootout debacle was one was particularly nadir) prior to him leaving the club and we were absolutely correct to get rid of him and search for a replacement when we did. Too late, if anything.

His last season alone:

There’s no either/or with any of our goalkeepers. All of Onana, Bayindir and the pale imitation of the De Gea that left the club are nowhere near good enough for the shirt.

That video really isn't that bad. There's a couple of howlers but each goal conceded is replayed twice in slow mo and some of them aren't even really mistakes. Typical lowlights video. Much of the rest of it is him misplacing long passes, which you could make a compilation for from most keepers in the prem over the course of a season. Like I said, he was trending down but we had FAR bigger problems than him which we should have sorted first.

As for 'there had been huge discussion and debate about him for two seasons' here as evidence that he was rubbish - there's been huge discussion and debate about our current best player for two seasons as well. There's just a section of our fanbase that will always like a moan. It doesn't prove anything.

We’re not having this discussion in good faith if you can watch that and argue that those mistakes aren’t that bad.

Some of the goalkeeping is abysmal and it contributed to us losing big games.

When you can’t catch the ball from corners (he never was able to do this) or kick the ball to a teammate with any sort of consistency then you better be sure that your shot stopping is fantastic. It wasn’t, which tips the scales against him considerably.

Replacing De Gea at the time was crucial. We’d just finished third and the feeling that summer was quite positive. The overwhelming consensus was that we needed a striker (Hojlund) and that we needed a goalkeeper (Onana). Just because they didn’t work out doesn’t make it any less true.

Just because Onana has been atrocious, that doesn't make DDG version from 2019 and onwards good. In the same way, that doesn't make Bayindir a reliable first choice goalkeeper.

Didn’t DDG win the United players’ POTY award in 2022? I know we were in the decline at that point but it says something positive about your keeper if they think he was their best performer.

FTR as someone said earlier, you can’t include DDG and Onana in the same sentence. One is the arguably the third best (some might say second) keeper we’ve had in the PL era, behind absolute greats, the other wouldn’t look out of place in a Sunday League team. DDG was a great keeper who made mistakes, Onana is a fundamentally flawed keeper who makes occasionally great saves.

And we let go of him afterwards. But we kept Onana... make it make sense.

We needed a decent cm, a winger and a left back. Yes we needed a goalkeeper but it wasn't that pressing because de gea was still serviceable for another season or two. Replacing him wasn't crucial, however often you say it. Some saw it as crucial at the time because apparently having a keeper that could play with the ball at his feet would revolutionise the way we played. What actually would have helped us kick on much more quickly and significantly was strengthening in other areas.

I literally said in my last message that there were some howlers in that video, so I'm not sure why you think I'm claiming they weren't that bad. But not all of them are that bad. Also most are replayed at least twice which gives a false sense of the scale of his errors.

Edit: Whoscored has de gea's performance average that final season above 7. So while I accept these ratings don't tell 100% of the story they certainly tell us he wasn't abysmal, as you seem to be arguing.

Are you a United scout?

Exactly, surely ETH pushed very hard for Onana? That it was more on him rather than the scouts and whoever else went along. Because we all, now, know that ETH, under Murtogh and Woodward, had way too much power.

And we let go of him afterwards. But we kept Onana... make it make sense.

Onana has just been replaced. The club nor Amorim wants him to be the first team goalkeeper at the club and it’s likely he’ll be moved on in the near future.

De Gea was no longer serviceable; he was costing us games.

If that video was Onana you would, quite rightly, be using that as evidence to support the view that he should be replaced. But you don’t like Onana, so there is seemingly a bias there whether you would admit to it not.

De Gea wasn’t good enough then. Onana isn’t good enough now. Now it’s a case of crossing our fingers for Lammens.
