André Onana | Loaned to Trabzonspor

Must admit, don't like some of the hate on here towards Onana.

He hasn't been a really poor signing, but that is the extent of it. As far as I'm aware he has never been unprofessional or a bad representative of the club, just a player who hasn't been good enough.

I understand (and have been guilty) or it with other players who seemingly dont try or are unprofessional but that isnt the case here.

Not good enough and we need to move him on. I do though hope he does well elsewhere.
Fair enough.

His handling of the CR7 situation was a red flag for me. Everything with Ronaldo and Sancho seemed ok under Ole. It wasn't until ten Hag and his Dutch posse rolled into OT that problems emerged.

I seem to remember Ole's team coming together and it starting to unravel when Ronaldo came back, really seemed to unbalance the team and we were less of a team and more Ronaldo FC, I cannot recall what Sancho was like around then.

The horror show at Grimsby was definitely the final straw.

Hurts to admit as someone who admittedly rated him before this disaster showing, but good riddance.

About time we start moving away from him, if the rule of 2 years is true, then he's shown over the last 2 years he's not worth the headache. I honestly believe he was the cause of our defense becoming so weak, our defenders stopped trusting the GK and it just cascaded from there. Hopefully this transfer goes through, and it may even lead to a permanent move next summer.

I mean he almost single handedly got us knocked out the CL with his displays . Started the season getting away with a blatant penalty vs Wolves when he completely missed the ball and took out their player and ended the season letting in a tame Doku shot in the FA Cup final that got City back into the game. Don't think you can call that a decent season.

I think because of how unbelievably bad he was last season it makes his first season look ok in comparison but really , it was still a poor debut season filled with mistakes. It was just a more regular type of bad in 23/24 as opposed to the historic all timer terrible season in 24/25.

We'll have to agree to disagree then. I think every bit of criticism Onana has received has been deserved, he's just been that bad.

To be honest, he started last season in excellent form for the first few months I think. He then progressively lost his way, but I remember him being very good for a period and seeing his name in ‘Team of the Season so far’ tweets.

That said, can’t argue with the rest. I was never keen on him from the beginning, and saw him as an example of people getting excited about goalkeeper’s passing over their actual jobs. His CL campaign was unforgivable, and amongst many feck ups - that Gibbs-White goal was particularly inexplicable.

He's incredibly unlikeable because of his arrogance when he joined the club compared to what he has actually given the club. The way he went after Maguire in those early games after the year he was having said a lot about his character, who he is.

Best news of today! I do not know who Trabzonspor is but I hope they do not get internet access until this deal goes through.

Ronaldo was causing all the issues himself after the end of the Ole/Rangnick season, long before he ever met ETH. When he finally did rejoin the group he then proceeded to play incredibly shit, to the extent that most fans were saying ETH either had no balls or the club were forcing him to play Ronaldo, as his performance levels certainly didn't deserve the amount of minutes he was getting during those first few months of the season. That entire situation was 100% Ronaldo.

Sancho I'm not quite so sure on, as perhaps someone with better man-management skills could have handled that better. But then again perhaps not, and based on everything else that has happened during his career I do tend to think he would have been a problem no matter who the manager was.

In the same summer of 2023, we signed Onana and Bayindir, and we were rumoured to sign Suzuki

it is the worst scouting work ever!

Your entire post is spot on except for the last line. I think it's this kind of baseless sentimentality that's been the bane of the fanbase for a long long time now. I mean he has fumbled his way here for 2 years and cost us many games and points. He has been paid his not unsubstantial salary and of course lord knows how much he has earned in endorsements all thanks to the power of the United badge. So the question is what are we indebted to him for that we need to "hope he does well elsewhere"? I don't give a rats arse as to how to does at Trabzonspor or Wisla Krakow. We need to learn to cut the proverbial cord with these kind of players who've had negative contributions to our club.

Yep, Onana was actually very good last season up until the Forest game in early December. He was widely considered our player of the season up until that point. But he made a bad mistake for one of the goals in that game and instantly lost his head completely.

Onana hasn't been as consistently bad as most people make out. For a bit over 12 months in the middle of his time here he was fine, if not better than fine. The problem is that that period was bookended with truly terrible periods where he's making far too many mistakes, and while we could somewhat excuse the first one (the first couple of months after joining), the second one and the fact he completely shit the bed as soon as he made one bad mistake in his second season meant we just can't trust him at all. Even if he had started this season well again, chances are he would have fallen apart as soon as he did make a mistake.

It's not just sentimentality here though, if he does well that will help the club get a better price for him when they do manage to sell him off.

Also I have to say lines like "I hope you do well in your future endeavours" are often a polite way of saying "feck off and I hope to never see you again".

Personally I feel it's alright to wish ex-players well even if they were shite as long as they were consummate professionals who didn't shit-talk the club or act out.

hopefully his loan materialises into him never wearing the Utd shirt again. He was a really poor choice in the first place and had been dining off that Champions League final for Inter.

Doesn’t help when you get ex Pros like Rio coming out with nonsense then amplified by the YouTube mob like Howson ‘A proper Goalie’

All the red flags were there and this isn’t a case of Utd ruining him. Poor technique with his hands, poor decision making and distribution over stated.before he played a single game for us.

Yeah, definitely. I'll freely admit that I was one of the folk who supported Ten Hag when he went public with his comments about Sancho. But I was wrong, they're both wankers. The difference though is that Sancho was a 23 year old wanker and Ten Hag was supposed to be the boss.

I can't imagine how Varane felt going from someone like Ancelotti to..... Well... Varane was a model professional, though. Sometimes I wonder what Fergie would've thought of him. He would've probably cloned him (as well as some replacement knees).
I disagree on Sancho. It is becoming increasingly obvious that ten Hag is sh*t and difficult but he signed off on giving Sancho a 3 month break. He did try the carrot first, but the moment he even hinted towards the stick, Sancho saw his arse.

Pep quite happily let an obviously talented player in Sancho go, which I’m sure had far more to do with him being a knobhead than ability.

Rather than loaning him out, can we sell him at whatever highest offer we got?
I don't care if it is just 5M

Same here. We under utilized Cavani and ended up dismantling the balance we had from that initial upbeat start

ETH gave Sancho a 3month paid holiday during the season. I think he did what he could to help Sancho

He also gave Ronaldo the captain's armband and played him for 90 minutes regularly. So I think he did what he could with him as well.

Firstly, the better he does on loan, the more we can get for him when it comes time to sell in the summer.

Secondly, I dont believe he has purposely been terrible, just isn't good enough. So I dont wish him bad when he leaves. This is as much on the club/ETH as it is him. He wasn't highly rated in the game when we signed him but had a decent season at Inter.

I agree. We can still be forensic, and rectify our mistakes quickly - whilst still being a club that says and does the right thing.

I can’t stand Onana, and never want him to play for the club again. But of course we should wish him well.

There are so few options left, we aren’t getting an offer for £5m. A loan covering his wages would be a very good deal. He’s out the club, and hopefully gains some semblance of form.

At present, no club would take a risk on a perm transfer, and he probably wouldn’t want to go to any club that would want to buy him now (majority of transfer windows closed).

We might have a chance at getting some money for him next summer.

Back to the GK situation do we assume Lammens is starting vs City. I'd be dead worried about Altay parrying the ball around Haaland

What's a bit weird is the Athletic is reporting that his agent approached the club after he was dropped for the Fulham game to ask if he should look for a new club while the window was still open, but was told that he was part of Amorim's plans. The rumours around another goalkeeper signing were around for much of the summer, so I wonder what changed and why this has only happened when the vast majority of markets are closed.

Onana missed United’s pre-season tour due to a hamstring injury and has only made one appearance this season, in the Manchester side’s Carabao Cup loss to Grimsby where he made two errors and saved one of Grimsby’s 13 penalties in the shootout. After his omission in the Premier League against Fulham on August 24, his representatives checked if the club wanted them to look at exit options but they were told not to, and that the player remains a part of head coach Ruben Amorim’s plans.

You’re right with regards to wishing players well; there’s very few that I wouldn’t *cough* Sancho *cough*.

Onana is rubbish, was always rubbish, I knew it was a bad signing, but that’s not his fault. Doesn’t across as a massive bell end, just a very bad goalkeeper. It’s just massively encouraging to see the club being so much more ruthless with moving players on. Hopefully the days of Jones, Lindelof and co approaching testimonials are behind us.

Yes there are exceptions, Sancho is one.

Players fail, players fail at all clubs, this summer at least we’ve started to address it.

Let's not forget that he is reported to have wanted a newer fatter contract for this season.

Absolutely, some of the comments about him on this thread have gone too far. There’s a whiff of something about some of them too

That's a strange comment about somebody wishing him well. You don't need to agree, but the world is already full of idiots spreading a negative, hateful attitude. Wishing somebody well is hardly a problem. I'd argue based on your post that your attitude is a bigger problem.
