André Onana | Loaned to Trabzonspor

De Gea could've been renewed at a lower wage as it was clear he didn't want to go. I happen to take Rio's view on the issue. Whoever was pushing him out should've been sacked.

De Gea was finished for us and needed to be replaced.

Onana being absolutely horrendous is unrelated.

To be fair, there are a handful of goals i wouldnt classify as a mistake. They were saveable, but i would still say that a lot of keepers would concede them.

The majority of them are just comedy. The freekicks/corners he conceded in the far corner, the misplaced passes, the shots straight at him where he somehow managed to let them in, the soft/weak hands, the slow reactions on even slower shots. Just baffling.

Ten Hag’s “masterful goalkeeper” has been absolutely shambolic.

Probably Garnacho not passing the ball all last season
Team didn't help with that much either. You know if you pass to Garnacho he's just going to take a shot. It's probably difficult for him to think about two things at the same time.

He was an easy scapegoat for the club's mediocrity during the preceding decade, resulting in a small but vocal group of fans obsessing about his wages to sharpen their pitchforks to justify replacing him. The uncomfortable reality that some simply don't want to face is that we would've been in a more stable situation with the continuity of keeping him than playing roulette on a new keeper. The preceding 24 months only reinforces this as an incontrovertible fact.

It's a bit mad, but it does seem that the Grimsby game was the one that finally made the powers that be at United finally see that Onana needs replacing and getting rid of.

If we replaced De Gea with Sommer or Sels or even our very own Dean Henderson, then the preceding 24 months would be a non factor.

De Gea was costing us in big games, in Europe and domestically. The fact that his replacement was an even bigger clown is a moot point.

People tend to blur 2013-2018 De Gea and 2018-2023 De Gea together.

They were two completely different goalkeepers.

Looking back its now hard to believe that Inter reached the champions league final with this fella in goal and kept eight clean sheets on route to the final

That’s the scary thing. Onana was a good keeper for Ajax, and really good for Inter. He was excellent for them in that CL knockout stage. Hardly made an error.

His form completely dropped off a cliff here at Man Utd. Space Jam style. I don’t think he will ever recover.

DDG overstayed (not his fault) by at least 1 season, the number of errors were increasing. Replacing him was the right decision, but not with Barthez-lite.
Given the costs involved & points dropped, we would have been better off convincing DDG to accept a lower salary & stay for another 1-2 years.

It was the same story when we replaced Smalling with an £80m Maguire, right decision to sell the player but the execution was poor.

Well, that idea wasn't wrong, in all fairness....
I thought he would be based on Inter form and stats wise after 1 season it wasn't disaster just the CL form stained him.

And of course the second season he should have been on the chopping block immediately

You don't need to agree with me, in the same way as I didn't agree with the poster whom I replied to. Also you can keep insinuations about my attitude with yourself. Not interested in handling personal attacks in a footy forum. Send Onana a bouquet and a sports car from your high horse.
You’re the one telling others how to behave, not me. I’m just telling you that being a “I don’t give a rats arse” type of person is just one more negative, hateful person that doesn’t add anything to anything. Neither on the caf, nor on this planet. It’s not personal, I dislike arsehole behaviour in general.

Strange that you think I like Onana. I’m happy if he leaves. Just because I don’t feel the need to shit on him, doesn’t mean I think he’s a good enough keeper.

Apologies if English is not your native language and that’s why you misunderstood. Many of the best posters here are not native.

Yep, Onana was actually very good last season up until the Forest game in early December. He was widely considered our player of the season up until that point. But he made a bad mistake for one of the goals in that game and instantly lost his head completely.

Onana hasn't been as consistently bad as most people make out. For a bit over 12 months in the middle of his time here he was fine, if not better than fine. The problem is that that period was bookended with truly terrible periods where he's making far too many mistakes, and while we could somewhat excuse the first one (the first couple of months after joining), the second one and the fact he completely shit the bed as soon as he made one bad mistake in his second season meant we just can't trust him at all. Even if he had started this season well again, chances are he would have fallen apart as soon as he did make a mistake.
Yes, this is true. Horrible start, good/ok/very good middle period and then worse and worse again. Tbh I was impressed that he managed to raise above his first terrible period. But after the second, and the Grimsby, I think that this environment is not the best for him.

We could do this with any player. Pick any player that most fans is under par in our current team and let them go, and then replace them with someone who shouldn't even be a professional footballer. Suddenly people are claiming it was a dumb move to let the original player go, even though it's nothing to do with the original player, and everything to do with the club deciding to replace them with a pub player.

The only lesson we can learn from this is sign better players to replace your outgoing ones.

De Gea was done as far back as the 2018 world cup, he never recovered from that really.

His 18/19 season was an actual disgrace, he cost us top 4 at the end of the season throwing the ball in his own net near enough every game, and Ole was completely spineless and refused to drop him.

People have to realise he wasn't just sold because of his kicking. Go watch the howlers he dropped against Brentford, Everton, West ham, Sevilla, City in his final season. The 2 goals he conceded in the FA cup final in his last game were kinda pathetic. If your only strength as a goalkeeper is shot-stopping and you're conceding soft goals to cost us major finals, your time is up.

His weakness in kicking, communication with defence, sweeping and crosses was only overlooked in his prime because of his shot-stopping and he very rarely dropped a howler. Once the howlers started and he's conceding soft shots that he should be saving, it was time to move on.

We didn't have to sign a worse keeper to replace him though, that's just the clubs stupidity.

Utd usually need a couple of shite keepers until we find the next worldie. Let's hope we've gotten two out of the way at once with him and Bayindir.

Big Senne to be the one.

was he really that good at inter/ajax?

here is a compilation of his goal conceding mistakes before he joined us - the mistakes as so familiar to United fans!

Before THAT UCL campaign in 2023/24 did anyone really consider him a world class goalkeeper? If so, why there were no rumours of any big clubs trying to sign him? Any why he did not get any individual honours outside of Africa apart from just 1 Eredivisie team of the year in his 10-year career? Was he just a hype after the UCL final?

He was not even in the UCL team of the year (which was Courtois) or Serie A team of the year (which was Maignan) in 22/23

I think he's a terrible goalkeeper and I'm glad he's gone on loan, but that video is a bit crap really. Has lots of goals that weren't really down to his shit goalkeeping. You don't need to pump up your "Onana feck ups" video, there are more than enough

What a terrible goal keeper. So glad to see the back of him.

More than the number of times he flapped at corners, fumbled it right back into danger, gave hospital passes or was simply conceding at his near post, what really got to me at times was his sense of entitlement.

The Haaland penalty, shouting at Maguire, the interview where he said he'll take so many more risks and the balls to ask for a new contract after missing on CL (mostly on account of his mistakes).

I'm a huge fan of INEOS transfer dealings. If nothing then for throwing out Sancho and Onana.

op This signing will be transformative for us going forward.
People were convinced to their bones that this would be the case. All the talk about his ball playing ability took precedence over primary job of a keeper.I just hoped he would be able to be top keeper first because at least with DDG, he could save us points most of time. Not going to denigrate Onana as a person but, absolute disaster of a keeper. Hope he does well enough to where we can get some sort of fee down the road or at least not be saddled with him coming back.

I don't feel strongly about DDG leaving either way. He was a lot better than Onana when he left, but was not as good as he used to be, and even with a wage reduction, would have cost a lot.

The mistake we made was letting Dean Henderson leave. He is an above average PL keeper. We should have planned for DDG leaving and not antagonized Henderson. We made 20m but Onana cost the best part of 50m and wasn't even serviceable for the 2 seasons he was here.

The problem with wanting to chase WC players all the time is that we sometimes end up shipping serviceable players. As an illustration, if we had Henderson (save 50m on Onana), McT, Amrabat, and Alvaro (save 25m on Dorgu), we may have cracked top 10 last season.

There are countless goals omitted from his United fail comp that he absolutely should have saved but you can't call them 'errors'.

Guy is absolutely hopeless and another ETH war crime.

Yeah I was thinking the same. It’s not even close to being ‘all Onana’s mistakes’ as the video caption describes. But I guess THAT video would have to be way longer.

I don’t know if Lammens is the answer (let’s hope so) but I’m very relieved Onana won’t be between our sticks anymore.

Have no fond memories whatsoever about him, always tried his "best" to feck us up in our most important games.

There was a reason for that though.

Yeah because Fergie was ruthless. It's nice to see we are back being ruthless again. No more misplaced sentimentality.

Remember when we thought him signing was going to be "transformational"?

Well we transformed into a mid-table club 2 years he was here.

so many I recall at the time thinking "How haven't you kept that out?"

Was Mac Allister or someone at OT last season. Shot takes a small deflection (not the Harvey Elliot cup goal) to give his defenders some deniability.

Just looked at that tweet of mistakes again. That made me feel so nervous. Imagine what those CBs would have felt with him behind them.

Lammens, please be good

You make a great case for him being shit and a one season wonder. Won’t argue with you!

Ddg wages should have been negotiated down to suit a backup while we replace him with an upgrade. How did we go from VDS, DDG to these two is absolutely terrible mismanagement.
De Gea was on a completely unsustainable amount of money to even attempt to make him the backup. He was the best paid goalkeeper in the world - even if he was offered a new contract on about a quarter of that it would've been an expensive deal for a number 2.

The fact that he was prepared to sit a year out of football before signing for a new club shows how distorted his earnings had become for the level of goalkeeper he was.

The two we replaced him with were rubbish but it doesn't change the fact De Gea had also become a massive liability. The biggest mistake we made there was letting it rumble on as long as we did, it should've been a much cleaner break and maybe we would've done a better job of identifying his replacement if we weren't still deliberating on his future deep into the summer.

Yeah because Fergie was ruthless. It's nice to see we are back being ruthless again. No more misplaced sentimentality.

Again? Shipping out loads of players in a short period of time isn't something new under Ineos. We've did it several times post SAF prior to Ineos taking over.

How could anyone at the club have watched this and thought he was a player we should buy? In a few mins it shows such fundamental mistakes.

What was ETH thinking?

The last clip sums him up - turns the player, thinking’s he’s brilliant, fannies around and gets tackled leading to a goal.

Feels like we bought a player off the back of some very rare good performances in the CL - in a similar way to when clubs buy players off the back of an OK World Cup - players who were never good enough before, and would never be again.

The Turkish league has a lot of potential to be entertaining and dramatic this season, kinda looking forward to watching it.

Just waiting for his few good matches in Turkey and some people wanting him back and telling that we made a mistake like with McT…

Finally we're moving on from him. We owe Trabzonspor for this one, I thought we'd never take those wages of our books.

Onana seems like a nice enough chap, but he's the worst starting goalkeeper to ever wear our shirt. Another one of ETH's big mistakes.
