ETH managed Onana, and he played over 150 games for him. So he knew him better than anyone (in theory).

I seriously doubt we scouted Onana in depth, or if we did those reports were ignored.

I cannot imagine he had been on our radar at all.

This was 100% an ETH decision. That we allowed that to happen is negligent from the club.
 
Scouting must have been bad because even at Inter it was obvious he had issues with parrying shots back into the danger zone. Seems like ETH must have insisted on signing him.
 
Whenever this thread is bumped, I get nervous that it's because his loan has been canceled and he's coming back to stink out the place again.

Even if he did somehow comeback, he wouldn't see any game time. He's played his last minutes for the club, thank God.

Yep, but I do feel like it’s one that’s going to end with him going on a string of loans à la Sancho or paying up his contract. What serious club is going to sign him when he’s as awful as he is and on those wages?

That's definitely a concern but what can we do about it? It's on him to earn a move and we've allowed him the platform to play. He's not short of confidence at least, hopefully he opts for Saudi.
 
Inter signed him on a free just 12 months prior, isn't it? And then they went and signed Sommer - a much more reliable keeper than Onana, from Bayern for 6m :lol:

I think the club were just insistent on getting this ball-playing goalkeeper, that they ignored the fundamentals of a good GK or thought that Onana wouldn't be relied upon much to actually to command his box and make saves.

The fanbase bought it too, believing Onana would transform our fortunes and that are lack of progress was down to De Gea's poor ability on the ball. Onana never really showcased anything special with his feet, he was calm under pressure but we didn't really see him create anything or deliver anything with his distribution.

In fairness, teams just realised not to press us high when he had the ball and then really there's not much a GK can do apart from keep it simple or do the 30 yard clip over the wingers head on to the full-back which doesn't really open the game up. No keepers can create anything meaningful against a set defence.

I think the club needed a new keeper and ETH proposed Onana, and no future checks were done.
 
I see a lot of talk in this thread about how inexplicable it is that ETH signed him, after having coached him for 150 games at Ajax. Therefore he should know all about him and his weaknesses. A very true and understandable point. It doesn't however adress the fact that Onana pre-ban and Onana post-ban seemed entirely different. Pre ban, he was a very reliable goalkeeper for Ajax, winning multiple championsips and reaching final of EL and semi final of UCL. post ban, he only played I believe 7 games or so for Ajax before fecking off to Inter on a free, and he was absolutely abysmal in that period. However, if you consider his entire Ajax period, he was good for 4 seasons, got banned and then was shite for 7 games. So in that sense, it is far more understandable why EtH wanted him.

I've always wondered how Onana seemed such a different keeper after his ban than before, but here we are.

Yes, ETH deserves massive culpability. Clearly this was his pick.
 
Thought about him yesterday strangely, not sure why a footballer pops in my head probably thinking about AFCON.

Glad he's gone, I hope we can shift him in the summer even if its for peanuts.
 
When I read the word "ban" I assumed match fixing but it was for performance enhancing drugs. I'm still convinced he has been or is currently engaged in match fixing. We had a chance to drop him before the latter stages of the Europa league last season and Amorim bottled it. Cost us the cup and Europe this season.

I take it you made that assessment about Onana's performance pre-ban by extensively having watched his games at Ajax?

You can see the errors he makes, and I’ve watched him in various European games, full games and highlights.

Strangely enough. I don’t watch every game, that every player plays. Clearly I haven’t watched him as much as you.

He’s never been someone who stands out as a great goalkeeper or great prospect - and at the same time has made horrendous errors throughout his career. He’s never had the basic technique of a top goalkeeper, and that’s always been the case.

He didn’t develop paper hands, an inability to hold onto the ball, propensity to parry into dangerous areas and let in goals at his near post - all post his substance abuse ban, did he?

I get it. You rate him, so you are defending him. However he’s a poor keeper.

I saw him a little at Ajax, mainly in their European runs and I thought he looked erratic. Erratic is about the last thing you want in any kind of defensive player, let alone a goalkeeper at the highest profile club in the highest profile league.

I agreed it was time to move on from de Gea, but his signing gave me bad juju from the start, and I knew I was right from the moment he absolutely got away with one on his debut.

Will die on the hill of “he’s our worst ever signing”. Yes, even worse than Sancho. Never seen a United player so committed to sabotage at every turn. Single handedly dumped us out of the CL.

I can't say I watched him as much as you obviously did at Ajax, or during his short stint at Inter, but he was one of the best performing GKs in Europe across a variety of metrics for a few years from what I recall reading and listening to on a few podcasts. I think there has been some revisionism to an extent, he's fell off a cliff in terms of consistency after signing for Utd but he was a very good keeper prior to that, from what I know. But you'll know better than most of us :)

I used to rate him at Ajax, pre-ban. As I said, post-ban he was horrendous. I didn't watch him at Inter and obviously he was a huge, huge flop for United, so I fully understand United fans that cannot stand the sight of him. Actually, I cannot stand the sight of him either, because I think he is very unlikeable and he really did one on Ajax by leaving on a free after being suspended for close to a year.

My only argument here, and one by which I will stand, is that it wasn't that strange for EtH to get him to United, as he was actually very good for Ajax for the majority of his time there.

Two of those goals, while he had no chance at saving the actual shot, came from his bad play at the back to begin with. Its something we constantly suffered from, he gave the opposition chances.
 
Some people feel this strongly about the prospect of Ole coming back
