André Onana | Loaned to Trabzonspor

I read a comment somewhere that he would 100% have conceded from that Saka shot on Sunday (the one that was near post) - and really, it's hard to disagree.
The majesty of his incompetence is that he can concede at any point, from any shot, at any time. Sure, the Saka one might’ve gone in, but just watch that Gibbs-White goal from last season. That was over 20 yards out, had a clear sight of it, wasn’t that hard, went in the middle of the net… still conceded.

Yep, that was not the only one... look at the CL goals he conceded... Ziyech on the freekick, Sane.

He was just a terrible keeper, most keepers you expect to be good shot stoppers, Onana wasn't even good at that.

How often did he get done on his near post or a shot that wasn't far from him because he dived so late.

Then you had his inability to claim, he used to flap at most things.

Remember when we used to have to pass it out from the back no matter how pressed we were and how terrible at it we were? Onana was always going to fail here in hindsight. It was a stupid reason to sign a goalkeeper. Also he was available on a free the season before. Shocking all round. Throwing darts in a dark room. He doesn't seem like a bad fella though. Hopefully we can get a few quid for him this summer. He'd be better in a less physical league

The only positive about his game was that his short passing and touch was (usually) pretty good.

The rest of his game-shot stopping, command of the box, long range passes, decision making was abysmal. A shocking waste of money.

Guys, it’s easy to lose track amongst everything else… but let’s also remember he came into training this summer with the expectation he was deserving of a new contract from us with improved terms. Never forget!

There were a couple of occasions where you wouldn't have been surprised to see Onana concede.

Zubimendi header that Lammens pushed over the bar, for starters. Even if Onana saves that, he was horribly prone to just clubbing the ball straight back out.

The Saka chance, as you mentioned.

There was a deflection at one point, that Lammens dealt with because he positioned himself well.

Even that picture going round of Lammens being surrounded by the Arsenal players practically on his goal line saw him break out of there and punch it clear, when Onana would almost certainly have not managed that.

However, the fact is that Onana was so unbelievably prone to conceding from literally anywhere that there was a cross from a free-kick, that Lammens came out and claimed fairly easily, that very much could have just floated straight in with Onana in goal.

He's always played like the shittest outfield player forced to go in goal, rather than an actual goalkeeper.

There are so many fundamental aspects of being a goalkeeper that he's simply terrible at.

It's honestly made me think did he suffer a brain injury between completing his medical here and playing his first match and nobody has noticed?

Because he honestly seems to not understand even the basic stuff when it comes to being a keeper. It's all wrong, completely wrong.

It's bizarre, we've had bad keepers before but they at least looked like professional keepers. There were large parts of last season in particular where Onana looked like he'd never played or watched a game of football before.

Still can't believe the absolute neck of him.

I'd nearly give him and free and pay him just to be rid of him for good.

It was just the sheer number of really simple basics he wasn't doing, despite being the sort of stuff you'd be annoyed at a keeper in an under 12s side getting wrong.

The saving with his fists instead of his palms, weird diving technique that regularly saw him jumping up rather than toward the ball, weird arm winding instead of simply stretching out, poor positioning that left his near post constantly exposed, incredible flat-footedness that made it difficult for him to react to the ball coming his way even when it wasn't that fast.

As you say, he looked like he'd never seen or played football before, and was simply making up the numbers by agreeing to put the gloves on.

I can see him leaving on another end of window loan this summer as some club in Europe panics when their first choice keeper gets injured for 6 months. Think it’s entirely plausible we end up mutually terminating his contract after that.

Said it before and I’ll say it, our worst ever signing. Sancho has talent but is a gutless waster. Sanchez was in decline. Antony was overpriced and unsuited the Premier Lesgue. Onana is just monumentally shit. He was shit on his debut and have never seen a player so singleminded in their determination to knock their own club out of the CL group stages. Undermined the defence, gave the entire team the yips and would turn games by committing errors beyond the inexplicable (see the Gibbs-White goal).

The only one who's looked so bad that if it came out in a few years that there were irregular betting patterns on our games, I wouldn't be surprised

If you told me that the real Andre Onana suffered a career ending injury just after he signed his contract, but rather than owning up to it, him and his agent concocted a scheme to find a doppelganger and paid him a cut to take Onana's place, I'd be inclined to believe you.

Quite funny reading he apparently hasn't given up on coming back - would a player in our history have ever been so unanimously rejected (for footballing reasons) if he tries?

How the feck he ever became a goalie, and how the feck Inter managed to get to the CL finals with him between the post is beyond me.

Yeah there are other ex Utd players I've disliked more but that's all usually for off the pitch stuff.

I don't know if i've ever disliked a Utd player purely for footballing reasons as much as I dislike Onana.

Laughably deluded.

What about the plethora of football connoisseurs on here who up till Grimsby maintained that we are fine with him as the starting GK? The same one that still probably think that Onana was an improvement on DDG and worth the fee paid.

This "plethora" of people must have amounted to about half a dozen at most.

There’s just a chance we might have an out on this one. Sommer has been getting criticised a bit at Inter this season, is 37 and is out of contract in the summer. Inter may well be looking for a new keeper, so send him back for his book value of about £18m?
Inter still need £18m capital.

They will be after him on a free again!

No one is spending £18m on him. Honestly if we got £5m and no payoff I would bite their hands off.

He will be loaned out (if we are lucky) until his contract expires.

When does his contract run out?
Not for another 2 years unfortunately.

Just hope he doesn't catch a flight to Manchester anytime soon. With rumours of Inter reunion, it would be a great thing to happen in 2026.

I get PTSD when I see pictures of him anywhere.

We're stuck with him for that long?! :o

Seconds after that Saka shot I thought about that... He's frustrating GK for different reasons but the way he'd concede those kind of goals was the most frustrating thing about him for me. Also for example goals conceded at Lyon (freekick and last minute Cherki goal). Dislike for Sancho is mostly for non-football reasons. Dislike for Onana is mostly for pitch stuff. And then him reportedly wanting improved contract

Wonder what was going through his head when he asked for a better deal. Mind boggling really.

United are still paying most of his wages while he is playing for another club, aren’t we? It’s absolutely mental

I think Trabzanspor are covering his wages fully with a little extra on top, no loan fee to United.

But Trabzanspor have taken on the most costly part. Him playing.
