André Onana | Loaned to Trabzonspor

A players career is short…then it would be for the money. Agree.

Doesn’t mean I want him to stay though. But it’s not his fault our top bosses bought him for silly money and big wages.
Onana is 29 years old. For a goalkeeper that's the equivalent of a player being 25 years old. He's got 2 years left in his contract on a rumored 120k a week. The guy is not injury prone so this is not a desperate attempt to stick to his last pay cheque and while not being United quality he did show he's capable to play at very high standards at Ajax and Inter respectively.

This isn't crazy from a morality POV but also financially. Is it really worth sitting in the stands for 2 whole years to cash that out? Football has short memory and at one point even the likes of Cannavaro and Batistuta had their ability questioned by the media. Do you know what two years of being portrayed as an absolute meme on the biggest platform in football would do to him? Once the contract is out no one would want to be associated to him.

I come from Malta who is tiny, football wise. When a local player does well then he ends up becoming the flag of the nation. Michael Mifsud (Coventry), Carmel Busuttil (Genk) and Hayley Bugeja (Inter) are a symbol of national pride. Cameroon is way bigger then Malta football wise (and geography wise) but they are hardly Brazil, England or Germany football wise. Is Onana relaxed in seeing his country's flag being dragged into the mud like that? It's not like he can't avoid it if he wanted to.

Now if he's seriously after redemption then he should ask for a transfer possibly to Italy. He'll probably have to take a pay cut (United might have to finance it a little as well) but the Serie A is ideal for him to bounce back..He'll be playing at lower tempo, there is less tendency of facing crosses and physically tall players there. As said, football has a short memory. McT was a bit of a meme at United but he swiftly turned it around at Napoli. There's nothing suggesting that Onana can't do the same. If he wants money then Saudi or the MLS is ideal for him. They'll probably match what we're paying him.

I'd take it a step further and say he's possibly the most incompetent player I have ever seen at United in a similar time scale. Not sure we've ever had anyone worse at his job to the point where you'd be forgiven for thinking its match fixing.

He will never play for us again
I see people debate our worst signing ever, and it’s always Sancho or Sanchez, but I will die on the hill of it being Onana.

Like you say, it’s the sheer incompetence of the guy. Sancho is a feckless waster, but he’s got a good touch. You can see there’s talent there even if there’s no guts. Onana? Flaps at crosses, parries shots into dangerous areas, causes chaos amongst his defence, gets beaten at his near post…

And it’s the inexplicable ones that really get me. The ones where you have to see a few replays to work out quite how he’s conceded. Again. Must be so demoralising for the other players.

Couldn’t believe preseason that everyone was going on about how we had to prioritise midfield and we can make do with Onana for the season. Found it utterly baffling. Was stunned Lammens wasn’t in the door sooner.

The strange thing is that he spent the first 18 months here slowly improving. Obviously he was atrocious for the first few months, then he was mostly ok for the remainder of his first season (he did still make some mistakes, but no more than most keepers). After that, and what people tend to forget, he was outright good up until December in his second season. Plenty of talk about him being the best performing keeper in the league up until that point, and statistically had prevented more goals than any other keeper in the top five European leagues (the same stat that has Lammens currently the best in the PL).

Then he made one bad mistake against Forest and instantly went to absolute pieces for the remainder of that game and for the remainder of his time here. I don't think I've ever seen one mistake split such wildly different runs of form in all my time of watching football.

If Onana thinks he has a role to play at United then our peeps need to politely tell him to feck right off

The displays in the CL were among the worst I´ve ever seen from any goalkeeper, at anytime.

It was like he was trying to get us knocked out.

That first leg against Lyon was just abysmal. The way he just stood there rooted to the spot.

I got nothing against this guy but he's really not good enough for this club and I hope he can find suitable offers in the summer.

Every few months these stories come out about Onana wanting a return. It's nothing more than click bait and it works. He has no place at the club and he knows it.

This has to be ragebait

The Brighton game at OT was the beginning of the end, the Grimsby game was the final blow.. He's not coming back

genuinely don't even want him here during pre-season.

Lammens needs competition and I think Vitek coming back could provide that. Tom Heaton obviously in his beyond twilight years and bayindir has shown he's also not good enough.

The man wants to fight for his spot does he? He'd have more luck fighting a humpback whale with a rusty butter knife.

Information warfare.

Designed for clicks and the inevitable "he can feck off" responses to drive traffic on their website

People need to stop engaging and reposting this shit.

Might he end up back at Ajax? Seems like he's still held in high regard there and they need a goalkeeper with Jaros out with a serious injury and being on loan anyway.

I know he's talking up returning but reading between the lines he probably just wants United to pay up as much of his contract as possible and move on elsewhere.

Forget fighting for his spot. I don’t even want him near the squad. No one can convince me a good amount of his “errors” are not down to match fixing.

On the back of your comment, I watched a few of his lowlights and you know what?

For sure some of the goals he conceded looked on purpose, he made an effort at missing/spilling the ball.

We should just terminate his contract.
I think it’ll hit the PSR bottom end so selling him for a little more than what’s left on his contract you be a positive for the club. If we can’t physically sell him then I would agree with termination, he gives United fans chest pains. I still get nervous any time a cross or shot happens with ptsd from that fecker.

Also, he was hands down our worst signing. All the other names cost us a lot of money and let downs but this fecker cost us points, games, heart ache, ptsd and money while somehow continuing to lower his own bar of shitness

Realistically what will get for him, 10 million max? Probably another one who’ll be here till his contract runs down in two years. How we were so bad at transfers I’ll never understand.

It's really not. Here's a link to the page against Everton at the beginning of December 2024, his last truly good game.

https://www.redcafe.net/threads/andré-onana-2024-25-performances.483497/page-37

'Consistently outstanding, once again!', 'One of the best keepers in world football.', 'His shot stopping has become so good after his erratic first season. Another great signing!', 'And suddenly we have a world class goalkeeper. He has been brilliant this season'

Just some of the comments directly after that game. His second season had been genuinely very good up until then. Then he had a slightly shaky match against the Arsenal corner bombardment, then absolutely shit the bed after making a bad mistake in the Forest game and was terrible from then on.

Another instance of a player intending to dig his heels in because he knows he'll never get a better contract than his current one. This is why nailing recruitment is so important as is handing out sensible contracts.

What do you guys expect him to say? He probably knows his fight for a spot will be over as soon as he speaks to the then manager, but he can hardly say he's not interested in representing his employer anymore...

Perhaps he could try being a bit more realistic by saying that he recognizes it's going to be a tough fight for his place seeing as Lammens is doing so well.

how much can we seriously ask for him with his wages, 10m?
There'll be some Saudi clubs that'll pay more. Issue will be Onana thinks of himself as capable of being the primary goalkeeper for a top tier club thanks to his Inter stint, so will refuse such offers. The likely scenario is, we'll end up loaning him to some Italian club for a couple of years before releasing him for a free. If we manage to get a fee for him, that's top notch work by the transfer team.

No there’s not.

They’ve really reigned in spending, and aren’t going to buy a meme. Previously they would buy anyone available, not now.

They are limited to the number of overseas players that can have. Also look up how much they spend on goalkeepers.
