Seems like the club is doing the necessary.

Will this complicate our summer dealings? Another position we need to upgrade sadly.

This really depends on who the alternative is. This club has a way of replacing players with lower quality ones. We are the experts on the downgrade.

But on this one even United would struggle to downgrade on Onana.

And we're the best as downgrading.

Guess we’re just 6 months from the media telling us hie good he is at his next club and how United are the problem.

Sadly, it will eat on our transfer kitty but thankfully we will upgrade.
So now the important areas to upgrade
Striker
GK
RWB

It shouldn't eat into it by much. Most keepers over 30 years old don't go for more then £10m... and all we need, a solid, experienced goalkeeper.

Must be a priority. Hopefully this time we will prioritise goalkeeping skills over passing

I don't think it's over the top to suggest this would be very hard to do, especially with our latest recruitment looking far better thought out.

I can't think of a starting keeper in the PL I wouldn't choose ahead of him for example, Sanchez & Muric excluded.

There are a lot of very good keepers about at the minute and we can play it as smart or simple as we like. Looking at Amorims transformation of Sporting im sure he'll know that to stand a chance of winning here he needs a new #1 and #9 as equal priorities.

He will be hard to shift from a PSR point of view.

His book value is £30 million, so anything less than that will be a loss.

I’m not interested in finding the next Ederson or someone like that. I don’t think it’s a priority. We just need someone that can actually save a ball and isn’t going to cost us points constantly. Forget about being a ball playing keeper. Just get someone solid.

Only we could sign a GK, plus a number 2 who are both quite shite

You have to laugh at it all - the incompetence, as it's at utter "disbelief" levels.

Been quite a while since I've known United to have standards. It's weird.

Bring back when Barthez had a few stinkers, so Sir Alex called him a useless baguette muncher and booted him back to France

PSR will prevent us from selling him I’d imagine but profit from selling Rashford , a fee for Sancho , a big move by Greenwood and selling Garnacho or Mainoo could easily help the situation

An unmitigated disaster of a signing, thanks again Erik.

Squeeze £20 million out of the Saudi’s and then activate the €20 million clause for Milinkovic-Savic from Torino. Could turn a dire situation into a somewhat salvageable one.

Romano said Saudi still have some interest in onana. If we can squeeze £20m it could work.

Aren't we interested in Trafford from Burnley anyway?

Slightly off - it's 30 million Euros - so more like £25m pounds.

But yeah, I think we'd do really well to shift him for more then £15m.

Honestly a cheap goalkeeper would be an upgrade on Onana. You don't need to spend 50 million.

We won’t be moving him on this summer unless he wants out and it’s to Saudi - we just can’t afford to take a hit in this area as well as the other areas with poor signings we want to off load.

In the scheme of things he isn’t out biggest problem - a better team in front puts less pressure on the keeper.

Yes there have been high level mistakes but we have much bigger issues to address first.

Unless we can limit the number of saves he has to make to zero, he is absolutely a priority to replace. Otherwise he will continually cost us points and games and he'll be stopping us before we can get started.

I'd honestly go for Schmeichel for a couple of years. Would walk here if we wanted him, would be cheap, and is still a decent keeper.

I think the only chances we have for getting a fee for him are Saudi, or to loan him out and hope he does well, and someone to take a punt on him in summer 2026.

If you were a club with a budget of £15m - I would bet you can find a better keeper than Onana.

He’s had a very checkered career - his one season at Inter looks like the outlier.

I think Newcastle are getting a new goalkeeper this summer, so I'd try and get Nick Pope in on the cheap. I think we just need somebody that is steady and experienced in this league for a few years.

His record against us is strangely good. Don’t think he has ever lost when playing against us.

The problem is Nick Pope is no great shakes. His Save % is generally slightly better than Onana and his performance against Post shot Xg is a bit worse. He's faced a lot less shots, and less pressure, at Newcastle than he would at United over the past few seasons.

But I take the point. Get someone in on the cheap who's dependable enough and won't drop clangers which unnerve the defence.

I remember the painful post-Schmeichel years well, hopefully we get it right quicker this time around and find our new VDS with our next #1.

Would be great to make an upgrade at GK, but this strikes me as the sort of exit that ultimately doesn't happen because the financial side ends up not making sense for either party.

Baffles me that people think it's so difficult to find a goalkeeper to be honest. Every summer there are goalkeepers available for reasonable prices; Maignan went to Milan for like £12m a few years ago which really wound me up because the same summer we could have easily got £25m for Henderson. The summer we signed Onana, Raya went to Arsenal for about half the fee paid iirc. Alex Meret is still there on a free at the minute as his new deal still isn't signed. So much of goalkeeper scouting can be done on data, before obviously the in-person scouting takes place later and genuinely there are no reasons that you need to spend a lot of money if you're taking a player from clubs below the very top clubs in France, Italy or Germany. Of course the mentality is tricky sometimes but the easiest way like you say is to go for a more experienced player, in fairness like Ten Hag initially wanted in his first summer when we went for Sommer and Trapp.

Imagine Pool having Alison, Kelleher & Mamardashvili on their books*, whilst we have Onana & Bayindir.

* Yes, I'm aware one of them (if not two!) are likely to leave this summer as the Goergian joins.

There's a reason Newcastle are looking to upgrade. Why do so many fans want random shite like Pope and Ramsdale, replacing Onana with another average keeper is a waste of money. We'd be in the same place in 12 months.

Won't happen because of the PSR impact. Ten Hag ruined us.
